  1. That would be the best option, for them to be temporarily at an RTA location. Obviously this development pending is a big deal so let's get the show on the road
  2. If it comes out cool, I'm down with the "south beach flair". We need more flash
  3. I despise country music in general, but this restaurant was a good way to bring a new demographic to the city. It's a hit, but it won't be (too) big of a loss as long as they replace it. I'm just surprised (I shouldn't be) at the general snobbish tone some have regarding this
  4. Ask Hampton Roads, VA how well that works. If you think Cuyahoga County/NEO is a balkanized morass now, can you imagine what it would be like if there were no single leader municipality, and you literally had the West Side competing with the East Side? It would be a complete and utter DISASTER
  5. Any news on this?
  6. And I saw someone mention the Shaker Square situation comparably: "Why is Shaker Square in the Shaker Heights School District? The story is not yet clear. Some published accounts may be incorrect. Old maps suggest that the Shaker Square neighborhood was never in Shaker Heights, but rather in Newburgh, which was annexed to Cleveland around the time Shaker Heights was carved out of Warrensville Township. One old news account, from the September 5, 1912 Plain Dealer, tells of an exchange of land. Not from city to city (Shaker Heights to Cleveland), but between school boards: from the area served by the Cleveland City School District to the Shaker Heights School District. Here's the story link. Such a "swap" would serve the interests of both communities. Shaker Heights wanted more students (and more taxes) to support a new school. Cleveland city officials and judges were glad to create an area where they could live in the city and still hold office, yet have their children educated with those of the city's elite who were moving to Shaker Heights." http://shakersquare.net/history/index.htm The referenced articles: http://www.shakersquare.net/history/square-shaker-schools-more.htm
  7. Let's try this again. It's irrelevant because ITS IRRELEVANT. CMSD and the East Cleveland School District are two separate legal entities. Period. It does not matter if the mayor, you or Donald Duck is charge of CMSD. It's irrelevant because they are separate entities and they will continue to be even when East Cleveland is annexed because THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO MERGE A SCHOOL DISTRICT. That is, as the state law that I've now posted and referred to for the fourth time now, to gather enough signatures to petition a merger of the school districts, get those signatures certified by the BOE and so on and so on until it is posed to the people affected in a vote (which, in this case, would be Cleveland and the former East Cleveland) and they have to approve it. I don't understand what isn't clear about this. I know you want to make this a problem but the law is clear and unambiguous. You can keep shadow boxing with an issue that does not exist if you so choose but the FACTS are clear. The ONLY way two school districts can be merged is to go through the exact same process that exists to merge a city. Period. Point blank. End of story. East Cleveland is proposing a merger of the cities only, not the school districts. The mayor cannot declare by fiat that he runs the East Cleveland Schools regardless of if the city becomes part of Cleveland or not. It is a separate entity and will remain so until the exact same process that merged the two cities is started again from the beginning to merge the school districts. PERIOD. To your other question/point: the few pockets of opposition to the merger in East Cleveland mainly is about them losing their identity and local control. If you listen to them, that's what they say. I believe that attempting a merger of the schools and the cities (a separate process, according to state law that I've now referred to for the fifth time) would've made a merger even more difficult politically and would make it likely that the EC residents would vote one down. So I don't see a merger of the schools happening any time soon unless the East Cleveland School District goes broke and has no choice. The residents there didn't even want to merge the library with Cuyahoga County when they knew it was bleeding money because of their fierce independence. (I know that for a fact because a wing of the library is named for a friend of mine who was murdered in East Cleveland. The people at the dedication ceremony made it clear to let it be known that they can do stuff like that because of their independence). The only reason the voters are likely to approve a merger of the cities is because they widely understand that there are no other options. Adding anything else to the equation would make this process even more complicated. I know East Cleveland people. They're very proud of their identity and fiercely independent. I don't see the school districts merging for a very long time, if ever, unless they absolutely have to. Not to mention that Cleveland residents would likely oppose adding even more low performing schools to the district
  8. Per Wikipedia: CMSD is the only district in Ohio that is under direct control of the mayor, who appoints a school board.[...]The school board appoints a chief executive officer, the equivalent of a district superintendent, who is responsible for district management. So again, while what you're saying is technically true, until the question is definitively answered I think it's worth the discussion because EC would fall under the mayor's jurisdiction. I'll post it again (even though I know you saw it because you responded to the comment I made above it) "The ordinance provided for in section 709.23 of the Revised Code, or the petition provided for in section 709.24 of the Revised Code, shall specify whether annexation is desired for corporate municipal purposes only, or for such purposes and for school purposes. In case annexation is desired both for corporate municipal purposes and for school purposes, such questions shall be submitted separately, but may be printed upon the same ballot. The legislative authorities in both municipal corporations in such case shall certify a copy of such ordinance or petition to the board of education of their respective municipal corporations, each of which shall, within thirty days, appoint three commissioners who shall meet forthwith and, within fifteen days, negotiate the terms of annexation for school purposes and certify such terms to their respective boards of education. Such boards shall, by resolution, submit the question of annexing such school district in the manner provided by law. Such question as to annexation for school purposes shall be submitted to the electors of the respective school districts in which such municipal corporations are situated, irrespective of deviations of school district boundaries from those of the affected municipal corporations." http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/709.25 Case closed

So again, while what you're saying is technically true, until the question is definitively answered I think it's worth the discussion because EC would fall under the mayor's jurisdiction. What I said is not "technically" true. It is LITERALLY true. I refer you to the state law that I posted VERBATIM a just a few posts above this one. East Cleveland is proposing this merger as a merger of the two municipalities ONLY. In order for the school districts to merge they would have to propose a merger of the school districts and the people would have to vote on it. Period. It's that simple. Mayoral control of CMSD has nothing to do with anything, regardless of how much u continue to bring it up
  10. First off, as a Cleveland resident, there isn't that much meat on the bone, so enjoy. Second, I fully understand that school districts and municipalities are separate entities. However, as a Cleveland resident, you should know that CMSD is not separate from the city, it is under mayoral control. That is why the question is one to consider. And if there isn't any meat on the bone, then why do you want any of it? (Great way to view people btw) And for the record: "The ordinance provided for in section 709.23 of the Revised Code, or the petition provided for in section 709.24 of the Revised Code, shall specify whether annexation is desired for corporate municipal purposes only, or for such purposes and for school purposes. In case annexation is desired both for corporate municipal purposes and for school purposes, such questions shall be submitted separately, but may be printed upon the same ballot. 11. Wrong again. In the state of Ohio, school districts are COMPLETELY separate legal entities. CMSD a being under mayoral control has NOTHING to do with it because the East Cleveland School District is a separate legal entity from the CMSD. That would have to be explicitly agreed upon to merge in order for it to happen. I don't understand what's so hard to see here. The East Cleveland School District exists whether there is an East Cleveland or not. The only thing that would merge the two is an explicit merger. This is pretty clear
  12. As we've debated over and over again, I vehemently oppose giving the "good" parts of East Cleveland to Cleveland Heights. As a Cleveland resident, I strongly support the merger but would just as strongly oppose it if we don't get ALL of it. All or nothing. Second, as a poster just reiterated, school districts are completely different entities. The school district would stay independent even with a city merger
  13. Completely disagree. Some of those homes are beautiful. And I think it's good to have diverse neighborhoods. Not every neighborhood should look the same. We need somewhere for big money folks who want HOMES in the city to go. I support building the townhomes on Lake, but the idea of wanting to tear down all of those homes on Lake to make nothing but apartments (as if there aren't apartments directly across the street) is hyperbolic
  14. I agree. You have to be realistic about what people want
  15. I've done business with XL before. When I promoted a party there in 2013 TG wasn't involved. It was black owned and, from my understanding, is still black owned. (And to the one who made the "shooting" comment, I've known very little to go down there. I've been an attendee and a promoter and I rarely, if ever, hear about stuff going down at XL. Not saying it's not true, but I've never seen it and I've been there and done an event there You should look through the Cleveland crime thread. Agai , I said that I'm not saying that it is not true. I'm saying that I've never seen that or heard about it during my time working with them or the times I've gone to the club as a participant

  17. The consistent development plan for Midtown has been the suburban style office parks. This is a feature, not a bug, of Midtown's plans. It's deliberate. My philosophy has consistently been that I believe that everything in the suburbs should be available somewhere in the city amd combining that with the fact that this is a deliberate plan of midtown's development, I'm not opposed to this
  18. I agree. This is a great great thing. I believe that all media should be in the city. CBS Radio, ESPN Radio and NPR are downtown, Radio One is in midtown and all the major TV stations except Univision and WBNX are downtown. Clear Channel, Salem and WNWV are in Independence.
  19. The church was damaged beyond repair. It is not financially feasible. That's the bottom line. There's not enough of a ROI to justify spending the amount of money to save the church. It's not worth it
  20. I love it. I think I've been pretty consistent saying that I believe nothing should be offered in the suburbs that you can't get in the city, for one. Second, I LOVE the idea of making it the biggest and best IMAX theater in Ohio. I think that would be great for us and could also lead to more premieres here, especially films that are filmed here. I think TC can compete if they focus more on the artsy aspect of their theater, like a downtown Capitol Theatre. I don't think TC serves that modern movie market. (I have some experience with this, as through my work I once tried to get an independent movie premiered in Cleveland. I deliberately targeted the theaters in the city but our partners at the time said that none of the theaters in the city would work because their film delivery system was antiquated. They said we would have to go to Cinemark. They were very difficult to negotiate with so the market ended up losing out altogether on this movie so I know for a fact that we have lost film premieres in the city because of the theaters in the city.)
  21. Well as long as we are deluding ourselves, why don't we plan the biggest most expensive walking trail that has ever been done... go big or go home. All in the name of waste! edit: not directed at you, as I'm also well-aware of the contingent that considers Burke A, a good use of real estate, and B, a worthwhile fiscal drain. The obsession with closing Burke when there is more than enough developable lakefront land without it is mind boggling to me. It's not the airport (on a landfill, mind you) that's the biggest impediment to lakefront development.
  22. Is there data showing this? Do people pay more to live at Quay 55 than on Euclid Ave? I personally would rather live near restaurants, retail and nightlife than on the lake, even with the upgraded view. That's not even close to being the same. Come on now. I know u can do better than that. Over at Quay 55 there's Quay and nothing else. I'm borderline stunned that it's even controversial that people want to live off the water and willing to pay a premium to do it. I didn't think that was earth shattering news. And just because you would prefer something else doesn't make my point any less valid. People get so caught up in what they want and can't see the forest from the trees.
  23. The ppl/gathering aspect of your idea makes perfect sense. If anyone has ever been to Ingenuity on the lake, you see how that area could function as a truly great space. And the best part is, it wouldn't require a drastic Nucleus type overhaul; it could start happening right away following the template that Ingenuity has already created. The warehouses space could be used for any number of things from artists retail space to interactive exhibits, music venues, or any sort of grass roots purposes. Add a boardwalk and some element of improvements inside and out with greenspace and congrats Cleveland, you've finally got your true lakeside destination that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to visit. Lakefront residential is so much more valuable. People are going to pay stupid amounts of money to live off the lake. Pace going in that direction is common sense. He's not spending the money that he's going to spend to develop a park. Hopefully he could do both but anything without the residences are woefully unrealistic
  24. There is absolutely a correlation between radio promotion and live shows. To suggest otherwise is to ignore what stations like WMMS and WENZ have done for the city in years past. And just because terrestrial radio sucks "everywhere" doesn't mean that Cleveland and clubs like the Odeon wouldn't benefit greatly from a premier station playing new music. Cleveland isn't like every other place with bad radio. It's a city that has quite a bit of population (see Indians attendance). I hope the Odeon does great. But being in two bands I am highly skeptical there's enough support out there. I know the venue owners and they are having a tough time. I work in the business full time. This is what I do. I wasn't just pontificating. The business is a lot different now. Again, like I said, their booking is what's going to make or break them. Not terrestrial radio
