  1. MTS, exactly! The environment that this casino is being built in cannot be overlooked. That's a large part of its appeal. Casinos like these attract different demographics. Which is, again, why I say that no one can predict what will or won't hurt this casino because it's uncharted territory.
  2. And Dan Gilbert has said himself that Greektown was an example of what NOT to do because it wasn't in the heart of downtown. So I don't know where you got that info from, but Dan himself has said that.
  3. None of those examples you mentioned, with the exception on maybe New Orleans, are in the HEART Of downtown. At best, they're on the outskirts or around downtown. But none of them are in the heart of downtown.
  4. What the naysayers are forgetting is that you can't just automatically say this is going to hurt Horseshoe. What are you comparing it to? There has NEVER been a casino built in the heart of a city's downtown before. (And Vegas doesn't count because they built their city around their casinos). So how can anyone predict that this is going to hurt Horseshoe? Based of what? The truth is no one knows what effect this will have on Horseshoe because a casino like Horseshoe has never been done before in America.
  5. Agree completely. The Flats was one of the biggest symbols of Cleveland's rise (and decline) in the 80s and 90s. It appears that the Flats will once again play a big roll in Cleveland's new rise and it is being built to draw people from across the region and the country. That's what I like the most about this project. The things that they're putting down there, for the most part, don't appeal to a big city-centric crowd (like us), but they bring in people from outside the area who probably wouldn't come downtown otherwise. That's good because it increases traffic to the Flats without killing off downtown's other entertainment districts. Good deal.
  6. Great list. I would add: A bigger media presence in the district. It's too late for WKYC tv and WKNR radio, but it's not too late to entice Fox 8 and WTAM and others to relocate there in the near future. To me it just makes sense to have your media outlets centered in one place. Synergy! Agreed! It's my dream to have an actual media district down there. I would Love to see Clear Channel, Salem, and Radio Disney down there! And maybe even Univision!
  7. I think this entire debate is a prime example of a big problem that we have in the city of Cleveland: the way that we view OURSELVES. DU isn't "cleveland". Well, why isn't it? Don't we deserve to live in luxury too? Don't we deserve to have stores and restaurants and hotels and other shops that cater to people who want the finer things in life? What's wrong with that? Why is that not Cleveland? I'll tell you why: because we have had this godawful inferiority complex for so long that we've begun to believe it. Cleveland is a major city. We don't act like it, but we are. And it is high time that we start behaving like one. Now, should every retail store in Cleveland cater to the clientele of DU? No. There should be something for everybody. But lets stop this loser mentality that says that anything is "too good" or "too fancy" or "too luxury" for Cleveland. When we act like that, when we think like that, when we talk like that we prove every lame ass comedian, biased national media outlet and uninformed American right about Cleveland. STOP ACTING LIKE LOSERS. This is Cleveland, dammit! We deserve the best and its time we stop settling for less or, worse, believing that that's all we deserve or that's all our "market" can handle, which is bull.
  8. i love the concept of DU and i support them, but I dont even attempt to buy their clothes. I'm Too big and too tall
  9. I'm not crazy about the country thing, but if it can be a draw, why not? As long as CLE doesn't turn into "Country Music Central", then I'm ok with it. lol. Although I do agree that if this same concept was for a different demographic that there would likely be more people opposed. But what the hell, bring on the Brunstuckyians!
  10. I don't know if anyone noticed this, but in an article about Mayor Jackson's State of the City address was this interesting tidbit: "And he said the Cleveland Indians and the Cavaliers have joined the Browns and the Cleveland Clinic in discussions about a "jointly branded" sports and medicine facility on the lakefront." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/03/jackson_gives_state_of_the_cit.html
  11. hold your horses........ Coming?? Im all for positive movement downtown, but lets not embelish. Per the article Expected and confirmed are two different things. Ive made a call and will report back. As long as its an upscale Westin or LM I'll be satisfied as Starwood has long ignored the Cleveland market. I know what ever happens. I strongly expect to see a Hilton built as a result of 3 Starwood properties coming online in Downtown Cleveland. Well we know for a fact that it isn't a Westin because we also know for a fact that we're getting a Westin through the conversion of the Crowne Plaza. So this is most likely a LM.
  12. BINGO. Exactly Okay so I see we've come full circle. I am certain people aren't reading upthread. IF there can be public access to the lobby that is great. IF they could somehow add a hotel or residential component it may be able to save the complex from remaining a huge DEAD ZONE on evenings and weekends. Like I said, I'm only hoping that the building achieve its greatest potential. I think the statement "the County needs a Ford, and we're putting them into a Rolls Royce" is quite clear. Using your same analogy, a Ford IS second rate compare to a Rolls Royce. That was my entire gripe with what you said. Contrary to what you may think, I CAN read and I did read upthread. And I took issue with that statement, the idea that the county should be in some second rate building simply because its the county, as if that building got any more exposure with its previous tenants.
  13. I won't disagree that the County could utilize the lobby; of course they could. My point is that as far as the lobby goes, the County needs a Ford, and we're putting them into a Rolls Royce. I completely disagree. Just because its a county building doesn't mean it should be second rate or look like a dump. This isn't just some building for some county department. This is the headquarters for the Cuyahoga County Government the (currently) largest county in the state. Why shouldn't it look like this? Fitzgerald refers to the city of Cleveland as "the capital of Cuyahoga County" so that would make their location the equivalent of the US Capitol or the state house or something like that. They could be creative with the building, like making a Cuyahoga County museum or something in there that could entice people who aren't there for county business, but the idea that the headquarters of County Government shouldn't be in a building like this is absurd.
  14. I don't think that's going to be a problem. Much of Cleveland's development money comes from repayment of development loans given in the 80s and 90s. Plus, there are other sources to get funding from. FEB had over 20 sources of fundng. So I doubt that funding will be an issue.
  15. I believe that they will be rented out like any other apartment. Since the apartments are for anyone, not just CSU students, I would assume that's how they're gonna do it
  16. Just curious--why were they banned? Unions
  17. Cleveland plans to hire downtown cleaning crew to work near Horseshoe Casino Cleveland plans to hire temporary workers to keep downtown clean for patrons of the new casino. Mayor Frank Jackson wants to hire employees for six months at a time, starting around the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland's May 14 opening. His proposed 2012 budget includes about $480,000 to pay wages and benefits to a total of 34 "real estate maintenance workers" and a manager. The cost is estimated at $844,000 for 2013, the casino's first full year of operation. The temporary crews would concentrate on the casino's Public Square base as well as other city property in an area stretching from East 9th Street to West 9th Street and from the lakefront to Carnegie Avenue. Duties would include power-washing pavement, removing graffiti, emptying trash cans and clearing snow. Shifts would combine for round-the-clock coverage, mirroring the casino's 24-hour schedule. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2012/02/cleveland_plans_to_hire_downto.html
  18. Yes, please tell us. It isn't one of Mayfield Heights' largest employers, at least as of 2002...... 1. Hillcrest Hospital 2. Parker Hannifin Corporation 3. Rockwell Automation 4. Alcan Aluminum Corporation 5. Progressive Casualty Insurance 6. Cleveland Clinic Foundation 7. QualChoice Inc. 8. Cooperative Resource Services 9. Pioneer Standard Electronics 10. Victoria Financial Corporation SOURCE: http://www.mayfieldheights.org/index.php/city-government/master-plan-mainmenu-237/chapter-2-background-mainmenu-239 I meant can YOU, as in the person who originally brought this up. Sorry. Damn tablet touchscreen. Lol
  19. Can I tell us where this state agency is moving TO?
  20. I didn't see anywhere else to put this and its pretty significant so... Rock Hall launches plans for Cleveland Walk of Fame, to be unveiled during Induction Week this year Cleveland, Ohio -- Cleveland is getting into the touristy walk of fame business, courtesy of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. On Friday, Rock Hall President and CEO Terry Stewart won the unanimous endorsement of the Cleveland Planning Commission for a Cleveland Walk of Fame that eventually will see the names of every Rock Hall inductee emblazoned on bronze plaques set into sidewalks around downtown. The plan is for everything to be in place for the first 17 plaques -- honoring the Class of 2012 -- to be unveiled at a press conference outside Public Hall on Wednesday, April 4. That's the day that kicks off a 11-day run-up to the induction ceremony on Saturday, April 14, also at Public Hall. "We hope to install them in front of Public Hall," said Rock Hall spokeswoman Margaret Thresher, "but that hasn't been decided yet." http://www.cleveland.com/music/index.ssf/2012/02/rock_hall_launches_plans_for_c.html The best part about this is: "the Rock Hall is planning to unveil plaques honoring the 2013 inductees with the first of what's to become an annual Walk of Fame Gala in April 2013. Though the induction ceremonies will be in New York next year, Stewart said the Rock Hall will invite the Class of 2013 to the Gala." This means that we could potentially have Hall of Fame inductees coming to Cleveland every year, regardless of where the Hall of Fame Ceremony is being held that year. I think this is fantastic. It will definitely become a tourist attraction and will help the city's image. I'm glad to see that the Rock Hall is (finally) becoming more proactive and using its name, lineage and popularity to benefit the city and itself more than just through the Hall itself. Fantastic!

I've been looking at a lot of the options and the one I keep coming back to is draft picks. There really aren't any players we could reasonably expect in a trade that we would want or that would make us much better. If we can get a good deal for Sess, then I'd be open to trading him. But we should NOT (repeat: NOT) give him away. I'd rather keep him than give him away for nothing more than a crap shoot draft pick. I don't expect us to get an all-star (or future all-star) for Sess, but giving him away is crazy to me, imho.
  22. awesome!! I can't wait. Does anyone know when they'll be starting development?
  23. I couldn't agree more. I can't believe the resistance to positive change. That is one of the biggest problems in this town: people who are so hooked on the "way things always been" that they resist change that everybody else sees as common sense. Disturbing. CSU is doing what they need to do to change the perception of their university. No university (NOT ONE) desires to be known as a "commuter school". I'm not saying to completely disregard the commuters. They should never do that. But they should be commended for doing the things that they've done on their campus. They should be commended for Campus Village. They should be commended for their strategy. Complaining about CSU's positive growth is like rejecting an iPod for an 8-track tape. Get out of the stone age and come to the 21st century! Give me a break.
