  1. Ya, it may be a bad example, but Christchurch, New Zealand which recently has suffered from some bad earthquakes has had to tear down about 75% of its skyline. Of course because of the fear of more earthquakes, no new skyscrapers are planned. Check out SSC, view New Zealand and check out the Christchurch demolitions thread. The city now looks like downtown Detroit. Instead, they are going for low and mid rise density. Skyscrapers, as nice as they are to look at (in certain cases), do not make a city.
  2. I don't know how much I can help you due to the fact that I am still a college student and have that college student mindset. But there are several apartment options like Statler and Reserve Square that are very oriented towards the CSU student. There are also several conversions across the street (Euclid Avenue) from Cleveland State's campus that have great looking apartments, but once again, student oriented. If you are looking downtown, I would suggest something west of East 9th. Although when I was looking at apartments downtown, I found some nice ones away from campus on Huron over by Playhouse Square. These were nice, and had a better mixture of professionals versus students. The one building looked like a miniature flatiron building. Is 668 Euclid have available units? Last I heard they were sold out. I had a friend who lived there, and they looked awesome, and quality seemed really good. I know you are really leaning towards the west side, but Cleveland has some awesome areas on the east side, too. Cleveland Heights has a plethora of neighborhoods to check out. And it's good that you will have a car. I always usually left my car in the garage, and was easily able to walk to whatever I needed. Grocers on the west side and Steel Yard Commons were a quick drive away, and I really mean easy, quick drive. I really miss the atmosphere of downtown Cleveland and the city as a whole. I moved to Florida for over a year and realized I wanted to be back in a state with "real" cities again lol. I miss and think about Cleveland all the time. You're moving at a good time with so much transformation going on. But I agree with what others have said, find a neighborhood you like, and find something within that neighborhood. You sound like you would enjoy the west side or downtown the most. I think you would do best somewhere in the Warehouse District, Ohio City, or Tremont. Good luck!
  3. More news from Canton/Massillon area. As good as it is that they are expanding, this sounds like terrible news for downtown Canton. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/02/timken_to_expand_office_by_akr.html
  4. Construction broke ground today in Youngstown on a $13 million dollar facility that will create 100 new jobs. http://www.vindy.com/news/2012/feb/27/breaking-news-houston-based-company-bringing-13m-f/
  5. For a bit of perspective, Detroit's murder count is currently 49. Moreover they historically woefully undercount homicides which languish in limbo (e.g. two burned bodies found today not yet classified as "homicides" until cause of death is determined...which often never occurs due to incompetence in the crime lab; this also happens a lot with torsos found in empty buildings or vacant lots). It's not just warm weather. Or the 9 month old that was recently shot in Detroit, or as of Monday, the 14 year old that shot and killed his mother. I have heard Detroit has been having some problems with violence against toddlers and such.
  6. I noticed the same thing last page. Considering that part has been open for a week or two now, I figured that must be the part in the rendering that they were at.
  7. Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but something always gets to me when I look at the Cleveland Wiki page. What is up with the old 1992 picture of the Port of Cleveland? It makes Cleveland look like some dreary city in Soviet Ukraine or something. It doesn't exactly help Cleveland's image, and not like Wikipedia is the end all be all of what represents Cleveland, it just isn't exactly a flattering picture of the city.
  8. Thanks. I figured we would have been much closer to the top 10. I remember last year the man outside of Akron (Copley Township) went up and down his street killing 7 people. Seems like it's getting out of control. I know this is suburban crime. Crime seems to be spilling out of Ohio's extremely dangerous cities and into the suburbs as well. A few weeks ago my high school chemistry teacher my junior year was shot and killed leaving her house in Canfield, Ohio.
  9. What is Ohio's violent crime rate compared to all the other 49 states? Ohio seems particularly dangerous, and who would of thought, Chardon....
  10. According to USA Today about 8 minutes ago at 9:42 they have the suspected shooter in custody.
  11. True about the wet gasses, which the Utica shale in Ohio has but the Marcellus in PA, NY and WV does not. As long as it is not overproduced, it will continue to be more profitable than the "dry" gas we're more familiar with. By "wet gasses", do you mean oil? I have heard that Ohio's shale is more valuable because it holds oil.

Western PA is chalk full of depressing towns like this. The steel mill towns are bad enough, but I have found the coal towns to be even more depressing.

Pretty much what I was going to say. Buffalo is awesome! If it had the population of Cleveland, I think it would be a superior city.
  14. I've already heard stories from my home county of Columbiana about wells and such. Channel 21 here in Youngstown has had a really good series of stories of both good and bad of the shale boom. They went to Williston, ND to talk about what their boom is doing in the middle part of the country. What I find interesting that they are having problems with, Youngstown/Warren should not, and that's infrastructure. We already have the infrastructure in place, and that really should be a good sign to companies looking to build and setup shop here. Another series they went to some Pennsylvania towns where peoples' wells have been contaminated by the fracking chemicals. Anyway, it was a really good series, and it basically touches base with everything we already know, but the benefits and drawbacks of this new boom here in the Mahoning Valley.
  15. Immigrants are used by natural citizens to create divisive politics, not the other way around. Low rents and access to available, low paying jobs are attractive to immigrants, and Columbus and Cincinnati both offer these things. Immigrants don't hinder economic growth, they stimulate it by consuming and providing just like anyone else. The difference with immigrants are that they typically populate low-income areas, adjusting housing trends, often for the better. For example, in Hamilton, an industrial city outside of Cincinnati, Mexican, Guatemalan and Latin immigration has been huge in the last 20 years. The westside and the Lindenwald area which is southeast, was almost entirely white, but now you see more blacks in both neighborhoods. That integration, albeit quasi-forced, would not have happened fairly recently without immigration. Don't forget about Guatemalans, guys. They are a major component to the Spanish-speaking immigration wave in central and southern Ohio. And they don't like being called Mexicans. I believe Dayton is taking on a program where they are welcoming immigrants. I know they really touted the program when Alabama was harshly cracking down on its immigrants. I know in a lot of depressed towns in Pennsylvania like Allentown and Reading, immigrants have come in and created businesses and really helped out the community. I believe population growth is on the upswing too. http://articles.cnn.com/2011-10-08/us/us_ohio-dayton-pro-immigrant_1_illegal-immigration-undocumented-immigrants-immigration-status?_s=PM:US
  16. Then why didn't you ask it like this the first time? I got the idea that it was just comparing the numbers and nothing really beyond that, basic stuff. Interesting I guess. Here in NE Ohio we have a lot of Puerto Rican immigrants and I was kind of surprised they don't count them as foreign-born. Please know, PR's (and those from Guam and the US Virgin Islands) would never be counted or called immigrants since we're American Citizens. It's offensive. Ok, well my intention was never to be offensive. I was trying to state something, sorry if I worded something wrong.
  17. There is one in lexington, its a country type bar with live music. Not sure if it is the same or not, but i would assume it is. So I am assuming if it is like Lexington, it will do very little to impress.
  18. That's what it use to be, not sure if that is what is going in.
  19. Good stuff! What is that thing hanging off the side of the Medical Mart's roof? It looks like it stretches over the street. Did not see that in the renderings.
  20. Is this located near I-76? I was driving westbound from Youngstown last weekend on my way down to Athens and saw a huge construction crane near downtown on 76. Thought that was the new headquarters for a second, but I had thought they were building it out in the suburbs like they tend to do in Ohio.
  21. What is happening to the bottom of the parking garage across from the casino and the casino's "visitor center?" There is plywood up all over the windows there. I saw it in the video.
  22. That's a pretty cool perspective of how this project will look compared to the rest of downtown. Only complaint, the hole in the middle of downtown. But that is for a different thread....

  24. Would that be in one of those store fronts leading into Colonial Marketplace?
  25. So is it safe to say Mahogany's will not be part of The Banks? That seemed like the only interesting restaurant to be a part of this project so far.
