  1. I am right there with you on this building. If you read my comment at the top of this page, that's pretty much how I feel.
  2. Is Waverly Station under construction or soon to break ground?
  3. Cleveland is such an awesome foodie city anyway. I mean look at all the neighborhoods that have some of the best restaurants of all different qualities from all around the world. Little Italy in itself has more variety than all of Indianapolis and its metro area. I live in Boardman, a Youngstown suburb, but even here in Ytown, we have such a strong cultural scene of European immigrants... going to a Applebees is one of your last options. In Cleveland, if I were to choose Ruby Tuesdays in Westlake or whatever, that would be a sin.
  4. And if you sit on the right side of the plane, flying out is awesome as well!
  5. I don't like the sound of a pedestrian bridge.

The latter half of your statement is exactly where I was getting at.

Uh, urbanites? People in walkable areas tend stay healthy for a much longer potion of their lives than ones in unwalkable areas. Sprawl effectively cuts off your legs. Indeed, people don't have the time to just browse around a mall these days. The move to a 24/7 service economy has destroyed they idea of a 9-5 job for many, and all that time spent driving has eroded the free time of Americans. And people who have concerns about this have more than ample opportunity to counteract it. I should tell all the people I see either just walking or jogging in my neighborhood they must realize it is impossible to keep physically fit in suburbia. And the number of fitness centers we have within 2 miles almost equals the number of pizza joints and that is saying something. People concerned about their health will actually pay to keep it up. At 72 I don't go out of my way to walk. But I venture to say I probably walk more in 2 rounds of golf a week in good weather than most urban dwellers do in a week. BTW what does this have to do with the Cincinnati Skywalk? And I venture to say most suburbanites are in worse shape than most urban dwellers.
  8. I didn't think about the topography effect on the roads, but that interchange from 75 south to 74 west is a pretty good example. There are way too many freeways to maintain in the Detroit area. It seems that 696 ( a bigger version of Reagan Hwy) has been constantly under construction since it was built. Then you have some sections of freeway (like I 96 and I 94) that have needed reconstruction for decades that just keep getting band aids. At least the pothole patrol makes the rounds much more often and quickly here. Sounds like Pennsylvania. PennDot takes forever and constantly seems to be building/rebuilding anything they work on. Cincinnati reminds me a lot of Pittsburgh. The topography really can make it a challenge in some areas to drive in, and in turn, will make rush hour 20 times worse because of it. I think Cincinnati is a better built city than Pittsburgh, and the topography isn't as challenging, but it still makes traffic worse than in cities that are flat like Detroit. Plus, having been to Detroit many times, the freeway system up there is plenty more extensive.
  9. Ugh, too much siding and not enough brick! But considering what most of Detroit looks like, I am sure it is better than what was there, or lack thereof. La Vogue looks awesome!
  10. I am assuming Detroit? Maybe that is because a majority of the metro area has no jobs... I kid. Detroit's freeway system as big of a mess and terrible quality as it is in, seems much more extensive than Cincinnati's. That would probably be a given due to Detroit having twice as many people as Cincinnati. Also, Cincinnati's topography can be hell when it comes to traffic and the way a freeways are built around that topography.
  11. Have they started construction on the pavilion? It says coming in May. http://www.columbuscommons.org/visit/pavilion/

Thankfully, I'm limited to spending no more than 20 percent of my budget on lobbying. But it's the least enjoyable part of my job. I guess that's why it's called work. If I wanted to do something fun with trains and transit, I'd be out there painting old railroad stations or volunteering for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR or something like that. Believe me, nothing would make me happier than to promote transportation choices without having to deal with politics and politicians. Until then, I'll stick with reading summaries of State of the State speeches so I won't have to listen to them. I'll let someone endure the sound of nails on a chalkboard. Which sounds like an awesome job. I was just recently shown around by the chair of the geography department at YSU and briefly met the urban geography professor and the one professor who deals with transportation. I certainly will be spending a lot of time in the Phelps building next semester. And yes, John Kasich's speech was typical politics. Lets say what the people want to hear, take credit from the previous administrations tactics, and address the obvious issues without really tackling the problem. The best part was hearing all the people scream during his speech about the fracking. If you live in the Mahoning Valley you know the back and forths with those issues. Anyway, don't mean to get off topic, sorry. But yes, his state of the state was truly a waste, and I thought it was comical that he made mention of the Turnpike and quickly started talking about the Brent Spence bridge in Cincy, but nothing about the Inner Belt.

Yep, 50 degrees and everyone has their sunroofs open and windows down.
  14. According to those renders, it looks like the parking garage was going to be completely closed off with the sandstone. Is that not the case today? Or are they still working on it?

I just wasted almost two hours of my life watching John Kasich's state of the state speech. He mentioned the Turnpike and Brent Spence, but nothing about the Inner Belt Bridge. Douchebag!
  16. Sorry if there already is a map, but this thread is pretty extensive. But does anyone have a map of the current streetcar route planned? I think it is awesome that it will be going down to The Banks now!
  17. Understood. The why wasn't the question. When did builders start doing this? I think the last downtown building built with a steel skeleton was the Stoke Federal Courthouse more than a decade ago. And then there were the various steel-girder/concrete-floored buildings around University Circle. But I don't remember any of them doing the plastic wrap. Maybe they were built in the summer, or maybe the winters were normally cold so wrap wouldn't have kept the concrete about 40/50 degrees so it can dry anyway? Seems like the OSU Medical Tower in Columbus is doing the same thing... http://medicalcenter.osu.edu/aboutus/expansion/construction/webcam/Pages/index.aspx
  18. I guess I want this building saved, and wouldn't mind it sitting vacant for another few years if something really awesome happened with this place. The picture in the article from what I can remember was your typical shot from University Circle towards the skyline, you can clearly spot this building in that shot. It is a huge building that adds a lot to the area. All the space around this building is already gone, and like others have said, can be built upon if need is there. This building can be saved, and can really turn into a successful mixed-use development of some sort. I just think too much has already been lost in this section of the city, something like this really doesn't need to go. Seemed so positive just a few months ago.
  19. As soon as I read this on my phone and saw park, I started thinking Detroit. I think the eastern side of Cleveland is not going to look too pretty in the next decade, and I am not just talking about all the dilapidated houses either. Maybe the zoo can open up an exhibit on the east side where bears and lions can roam free.
  20. Ok, but no one cares about him. He is a thing of the past, so let's leave him there. Cleveland already gets ragged on enough for talking about him all the time.
  21. Speaking of hotels in Boardman, Poland, and Canfield. There is a new Hampton Inn along Route 11 and another new hotel they are building beside it that seems to be a different brand that I have never heard of. Foundation is pretty much finished and it is starting to go up.
  22. I believe it has been there for quite some time. Unless I remember plywood being up for the restaurant itself which we are talking about and something else has moved in. Wasn't Kent State doing something with that building?
  23. They are relevant in the sense of parking. It took me forever to find a parking space in Gainesville (which seems to be the problem according to the article), and parking was extremely limited there. People complained when they were adding new additions to buildings that took out some of the overflow parking spaces. What most people are getting at here is why the constant complaining from students about the parking when there is plenty of it on and around campus. It's really a mute point because walking is not that big of an issue, and if you have problems with walking, there a plenty of other options to help you along to get to where you need to on campus. If you have to leave a little earlier to find parking, do so. The south garage is plenty big enough and close enough to campus (especially the student center) which leads you right to the connector right to everything on campus. Like I said earlier, I think everyone here is agreeing that this new development is great for CSU and we all want to see it continue to boom like it is. But the overall mentality of CSU drivers needs to go. God forbid you walk a couple hundred more feet to get to where you need to go. Drive around for another 15 minutes just to find a spot that's closer to where YOU want to be at and then complain you were late for class. Meanwhile, I guarantee you can find a spot somewhere else on campus without the hassle of fighting someone for a spot, and you can easily get to class on time.
  24. They need to make it reflective like MOCA (not in the sense of a mirror). Polish it up a bit.
  25. I noticed a construction project/crane in the bottom left of the construction webcam. I am pretty sure that is a separate project, correct?
