Columbus: Local Media News & Discussion
That's the exact same way I felt when I saw it as well! I was actually at work when it aired during the Superbowl. I've always been a big fan of news promos and the graphics and music used in them, so I was immediately taken in by the promo. But I was amazed to see my other coworkers stop what they were doing to watch it as well! One even commented that he was impressed by it and that he was amazed to see something so well done for a local station. I immediately found it on youtube, and like you, I was playing it over and over again, marveling at how well they integrated some incredible skyline+helicopter shots with the station talent along with the very fitting and lovely musical score. In preparation for Channel 10 to begin airing in HD, the news set and graphics package is being redeveloped as well. I can't wait to see what they have in store!

CMH_Downtown replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentCrowds warmly greet Rosendales Tuesday, March 20, 2007 3:29 AM By Barnet D. Wolf THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Opening night is always exciting and nerve-wracking, whether it's a play or a new restaurant. Saturday night was no different at Rosendales, the new upscale Short North restaurant in the former Winders auto dealership, 793 N. High Street. Expectations have been high because of the background of the restaurant's 31-year-old namesake, Richard Rosendale. The classically trained chef, most recently at the Greenbrier Resort's prestigious Tavern Room Restaurant in West Virginia, was the American Culinary Federation's 2005 Chef of the Year. He also was named captain of the American team for the 2008 Culinary Olympics and has amassed more than 40 national and international medals. BET.com ranks Columbus as 2nd best city for Black Americans, Cleveland the worst
I just realized why Columbus was ranked so high in the rankings... We're home to the one and only, almighty Chicken District! Where else do you find a Popeye's, a Church's, and a KFC (not pictured) at one intersection! A virtual smorgesborg of fried delight!

Columbus: Arena Park Place, new 13 story tower
My guess is that this project can be safely put in the "Abandoned Projects" section of UrbanOhio. It's a shame too, that could've been a really nice development.

Columbus: Downtown: Arena District Developments and News
CMH_Downtown replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYou are correct. The crane on the left is the spot where Lifestyle Communities' new headquarters is going to be built. Also, on the other side of the photo, Nationwide is wrapping up work on their new building, which covers another garage. Aww, I always liked the William Green Building (third to the right of the three). That's what RiverSouth is supposed to be for ;-). And while it may look far away from the photos, the North Bank Condos are less than half a mile away from High St. Think of the Arena District as the Northern Kentucky of Columbus ;-). I know, I know, that's a stretch, but work with me here! And lastly, nicely done on the photo update. Looking forward to its completion.

Some press from Columbus Business First: Transit hubs taking a turn in the spotlight Business First of Columbus - March 9, 2007 by Adrian Burns Business First Janet Adams | Business First http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2007/03/12/story3.html?page=3&b=1173672000^1429338 They may design structures that are stationary, but Columbus architects are generating a buzz about how people will move around Central Ohio. Cincinnati: Urban Grocery Stores
How about a downtown grocer at 5th and Race? This is an important piece of real estate. It's one of the only areas in the central core that has a decent amount of land for development. Given that, I'd like to see something iconic rise from that spot. Since the skywalk is already in place, I think a two level Whole Foods could work extremely well, topped by one or even twin 20-or-so story condominium and/or mixed use towers. I reference Whole Foods for the fact that they seem to have a larger, more varied offering than Trader Joe's. To be honest, I wasn't overly impressed with Trader Joe's the first time I visited; much prefer Whole Foods. In addition, several cities have Whole Foods stores in locations in or near downtown, so I would think the company would be open to the concept of a downtown location in Cincinnati, especially with a pre-existing connection to other retail downtown. The condo market downtown is thriving, so the large scale addition of urban housing in the urban core is more than justified.

Columbus: Random Development and News
CMH_Downtown replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThe sticker price of $558,000 does sound much more realistic than the previously quoted figure of $1.5 million. Just about anything will be an improvement over the sporadic and inconsistant wayfinding signage that currently dots downtown. Hold up. Shouldn't this money be going to the proposed median on Broad St.? The sidewalks sound pretty and all, but the Broad St. median has been proposed for ages. If the money was available to throw at Casto, why couldn't it have been put into the median instead?

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
CMH_Downtown replied to seanguy's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThere's a clearer rendering on the front page of the print edition of the Dispatch. The windows all have balconies. It looks like artwork going up the sides, either in the form of banners or actually painted onto the building. The exterior might be pink or creme in color, not quite sure. Either way, this proposal is certainly unique for that area of town.

CMH_Downtown replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentAgreed, it's a cheap and delicious way of tasting a nice selection of beers. I personally like the darkers beers, and I found the porter and scottish ales to be pretty good. The seasonal beer at the time wasn't bad either. Though of the local brewpubs, Elevator Bar is my favorite. Every one of their beers is fantastic, especially the Procrastinator Dopplebock and the Coal Porter.

Columbus: Huntington Park (Clippers ballpark)
County heads to the drawing board New jail, animal shelter and courthouse make cut for $324 million building plan Wednesday, February 28, 2007 Barbara Carmen THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH County officials will unveil an ambitious three-year $324 million construction program on Thursday. Proposed projects include: • A courthouse. The new building will feature 22 full-size or spectator-size courtrooms for high-profile cases and 10 magistrate’s courtrooms. Franklin County currently has 17 judges and six magistrates slogging through one of the heaviest dockets in the state. • A larger, safer dog shelter. The new 60,000-square-foot shelter would be three times as large as the old one and offer improved ventilation systems to prevent germs from spreading among dogs and people. • A new jail. Franklin County’s third jail might be built next to the one at 2460 Jackson Pike and house 500 to 600 nonviolent offenders. Eventually, the jail Downtown might gain an addition. • Hall of Justice renovations. The project would strip asbestos and remodel the 1970s tower at 369 S. High St., currently home to the Common Pleas Court. • Unified county complex. The county plans to build an airportlike concourse and relocate security checkpoints to link its five buildings on the south side of Downtown. • Huntington Park. The old 17,000-seat Cooper Stadium will be replaced by a 10,200-seat ballpark in the Arena District. The county expects to begin clearing the site for the new ballpark in March, with the opening planned for spring 2009. CMH_Downtown replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentColumbus microbreweries foster loyal following Business First of Columbus - February 23, 2007 by Scott Rawdon For Business First Ross Wilcox is a Columbus native and he drinks Columbus beer. In a city known nationally as a corporate test market, locally brewed beer offers him something that relates to his home town. The commercial real estate agent and his friends, Jason Oesterreich and Brent Stamm, occasionally hang out at the Columbus Brewing Co. after work for a brew and a bite. They can get domestic or imported beer in many places, but it's the beer brewed at this local microbrewery that brings them to the particular venue. Columbus has had a rich history of microbreweries since the 1800s, but in the last 20 years, the combination of restaurants and microbreweries, or brewpubs, has helped them experience a renaissance of sorts. Dayton: a big-time sports city???
I don't know...I think an argument can be made in favor of establishing an NBA franchise in Dayton. As was previously mentioned, Dayton and the Miami Valley comprise of more than a million people, which is good base to begin with. However, add in the close proximity of Cincinnati and Columbus, and your potential market area explodes. Also, as mentioned, the closest professional basketball markets to Dayton are Cleveland, Detroit, and Memphis. An NBA team in Dayton would hardly be stepping on anybody's toes. Other markets, such as Grand Rapids and Louisville, have made cases for supporting a professional sports team, and both of which are of similar size to Dayton. Dayton already sees quite a few big-name music tours due to the available facilities at venues such as The Nutter Center and its proximity to both Cincinnati and Columbus, so why not shoot for professional sports? Quite frankly, I think Dayton stands the best chance of scoring an NBA team in Ohio, since Columbus already has a professional winter sport with the NHL Blue Jackets, and Xavier and UC are huge draws in Cincinnati. I'd say go for it.

Columbus Blue Jackets Discussion
Apparently it was quite the game, not only on the ice but in the stands. Must've definitely been a fun night. BLUE JACKETS 3 SABRES 2 Jackets make noise Third-period comeback silences large contingent of Buffalo fans Saturday, January 27, 2007 Michael Arace THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Blue Jackets center Manny Malhotra looked out a restaurant window yesterday afternoon and saw a passing car with a Buffalo Sabres flag sticking out a window. Then, there was another one. "I thought, ‘Oh, there’ll be a few Sabres fans at the game,’ " Malhotra said. "And then, on the way to the game, there they were — hordes and hordes of them." Not since the days of the old Ohio State Penitentiary has there been as textured an evening on Front Street, and the game lived up to the decibels. The Blue Jackets scored twice in the third period and beat the Sabres 3-2 in front of a sellout crowd of 18,136.
