Cincinnati/NKY International Airport
I can't quite see how. Skybus was certainly an attempt to replicated Ryanair. My goal in the my post was to show that despite their striking similarities, the model works in one market and is a horrible failure in another. Likewise, the European cities I listed most certainly cannot be compared on an equal level to those that Skybus focused on in the U.S. My goal was to show that Ryanair established themselves in the largest population centers with equally large tourism numbers. Columbus and Greensboro (and Cincinnati) do not fit this description. Considering Ryanair's position in the European market and a cash reserve in the billions of euros, my guess is that it will take a lot to bring the airline down.

Because the European air travel market is fundamentally different from the U.S. air travel market. The advent of the European Union sparked a wave of new entrant carriers, including the likes of Ryanair and easyJet. In an effort to mimic the success of low cost carriers in the U.S., these new carriers adopted a similar business plan, but took it a step further. What I mean by that is they took the Southwest model and stripped it down to as basic a service as possible. This was done by doing away with many services that one had once come to expect as built in to the price of the ticket, such telephone reservation centers, enforcing rigorous rules regarding rebookings and cancellations, and paying for nearly every service offered from drinks to baggage. So in essence, Europe never saw and became accustomed to a carrier like Southwest or jetBlue, but instead was immediately exposed to the "ultra low cost carrier" concept. In addition, easyJet and Ryanair were able to establish themselves in Europe's top markets, just through second or third tier airports. London was served through Luton and Stansted airports, Rome through Ciampino instead of Fiumicino, Frankfurt Hahn instead of Frankfurt Main, etc (though lately, easyJet has begun service into the main airports of several cities, such as Amsterdam, Paris, and Madrid, which also has been accompanied by a rise in fares). In most cases, easy access to the city's business center is readily available either by train or motor coach. On top of that, once Ryanair and easyJet became more established, many second and third tier airports began offering incentives to both carriers to the point of completely funding their existence. This practice was later ruled illegal. Back in the U.S., the top tier markets are already incredibly well served by the established network carriers as well as low cost carriers. The L.A. basin alone has BUR, ONT, SNA, and LGB to choose from in addition to LAX, all of which are served by a multitude of low fare carriers. There literally is no room nor is there a necessity for a carrier the likes of Ryanair or easyJet to enter the market. Lastly, just because Ryanair has been incredibly successful does not mean they aren't susceptible to market conditions that have been ravaging the airline industry. Fuel costs have hurt Ryanair's balance sheet as well, and the airline has cut routes and destinations in response. http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/0728/ryanair.html

Definitely fantastic news. Coming off the heels of loosing jetBlue and cuts from the network carriers, this is certainly welcome and needed new service at Port Columbus. The arrival of AirTran in CMH is especially important due to the fact that it will finally alleviate fares between Columbus and Atlanta, which have long been under Delta's control. AirTran also heralds low fare connections to the Southeast, full-sized planes, and affordable business class. Here's hoping that AirTran sees success in the Columbus market.

Columbus: Restaurant News & Info
CMH_Downtown replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentRosendale planning Short North lounge bar Business First of Columbus Rich Rosendale is set to double his reach in the Short North dining scene this fall. The chef on Monday announced plans for a Details casual lounge bar at 791 N. High St. that will serve small plates and drinks next door to his namesake restaurant. He did not know exactly when in the fall the lounge might open. Rosendale and architect Andrew Rosenthal will design Detail’s 1,200-square-foot interior. The lounge will share some of the kitchen and supply space with its 4,200-square-foot Rosendales Restaurant neighbor, giving Details room for about 50 seats, Rosendale said in an interview. I remember them being in the southwestern quadrant of the building, past the early masters collection (room, lol) but before entering the early 20th century American art.

C-Bus ~ What To Do?
I didn't bother including the CMA since the OP is from Cleveland, so it would likely be a pretty big disappointment in comparison. Though I wouldn't go as far as to say it's "shitty." The collection is small, partly due to lack of space, but excels especially in modernist and impressionist art, including pieces from Degas, Renoir, Monet, Matisse, and Picasso. The original 1931 building is also of worthy note. Columbus also enjoys the distinction of housing a seperate contemporary art gallery at the Wexner Center for the Arts, which coincidently, will be hosting the only North American exhibit of the newest Andy Warhol exhibit. However, bringing up the CMA reminded me to include another Discovery District fixture: The Columbus Metropolitan Library.

CVG: Delta and Comair news
From The Enquirer: http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080709/BIZ01/307090072/1076/rss01 So far we don't know exactly which routes will be affected, though I think it's pretty safe to say the CVG won't be loosing the flights that "count" if you will. I'm talking about nonstop flights to cities like San Francisco and Seattle, Frankfurt and Paris. Those all likely make quite a bit of money for Delta, and I can definitely see remaining (worst case scenario would be frequency cuts, i.e. 2x daily CVG-LAX instead of 4x daily). We do know some routes that will be cut completely from local media sources, so far they include: Akron, Lansing, Roanoke, State College, Toledo Really as far as importance measured in origin and destination traffic is concerned, these cuts really aren't critical. My guess is that in addition to frequency reductions, cuts will come in the form of discontinued service to similar sized cities without a large Delta presence or where Northwest can easily provide service through DTW once the merger is complete, such as Fort Wayne, Appleton, and Allentown. Either way, it's certainly disappointing to watch this happen, but every cities around the country is facing some pretty major air service cuts. Hopefully something can be done to right the course in which the airlines are going.

Columbus - Arena District - Living Options?
Sorry, I for some reason missed your post! I would most definitely suggest Olentangy Village. The community sits directly off High St. in between Campus and Clintonville and has single units starting in the mid to upper $600s. Given what you described, it would be the perfect location. A full-service Giant Eagle sits on the grounds of Olentangy Village and there are lots of independent stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries within walking distance. Not to mention, the #2 goes right by for longer distance trips. Their website: http://www.olentangyvillage.com/index.html If Olentangy Village doesn't meet your likes, there are other much smaller apartment buildings scattered around the areas north of Campus and in to Clintonville. The only problem is as you go further north, your options become more limited as Clintonville is mostly single family dwellings. I would also recommend looking at aparments on the other side of the river in the University Village area. There are a lot of apartments there that have very good access to COTA and are close to shopping and other services along Olentangy River Road. Most of MGI Communities' properties sit close to Campus, are in good, older neighborhoods, and are within easy access of goods and services either via bike or COTA: http://www.mgicommunities.com/search2.asp The only problem with some of these properties is that they are close to Campus but somewhat far from Clintonville. For example, the Stadium View apartments are in a perfect location in that they are within short walking/biking distance to Lennox, 5th Ave, Grandview Heights, and Campus, however they are pretty far from Clintonville proper, and trying to take COTA would probably involve riding your bike all the way to High St. But, they still could be an option, especially since the majority fit your price range well. If you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to ask.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Columbus (well, Columbus metro) technically just lost Wendy's. As far a Central Ohio companies are concerned, the only ones that I could see leaving, either by being taken over or just because they feel like it are Huntington and Limited Brands. The former because as a regional bank, it's a good takeover target, the later because, let's face it, Columbus is not NYC or Paris.

Columbus wedding reception locales
Another option might be the glass sheltar at North Bank Park. It sits right on the riverfront, has pleanty of on-street parking, and has a great view. The only problem is that I don't know if it would fit a guest list of 250 people. Also, fantastic choice in getting married at Holy Cross. That church is breathtaking and is actually the oldest Catholic church in Columbus (not St. Joseph Cathedral, like many people think).

Columbus: Scioto Mile Riverfront Park News
Actually, we squandered it decades ago by putting all our government buildings along the river. Honestly, even if the city tried to establish a retail/commercial corridor along the river, there wouldn't be enough space to put anything worthwhile. In addition, the downtown retail market isn't what it used to be. I doubt we'd see anything like San Antonio's Riverwalk along the Scioto. I think creating a string of parkland along the river is the best way to go about redeveloping our waterfront, especially since it should provide greater room for our many outdoor events, fairs, and concerts, such as Red White and Boom, the Jazz and Rib Fest, and Festival Latino. That would be fantastic.

Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
Another? The only real boutique hotel downtown is The Lofts. I definitely think either a chain boutique hotel or an independent brand could work in that location. Also, I can't help but wonder what would be done about parking. The Residence Inn in the converted Buckeye Building doesn't have it's own parking area, as far as I know. I wonder if they would keep part of the current surface lot to serve as parking for the hotel, or possibly use a close-by garage, or build an adjoining garage.

Columbus Bicentennial 2012
Columbus gets blueprint for bicentennial improvements Business First of Columbus - by Jeff Bell Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman received a long list of recommendations Thursday from a commission he appointed to create a blueprint for the city's bicentennial in 2012. The recommendations said the effort should focus on improving and supporting neighborhoods, downtown Columbus, economic prosperity, transportation and "green" environmental initiatives while creating a culturally rich city. They also call for embracing Columbus' history and defining a new legacy for the city. No price tag was attached to the recommendations, but Coleman said it will take a joint effort by city government and the business, nonprofit and philanthropic communities to accomplish them. The commission hopes the blueprint guides parts of a bicentennial bond package that Coleman wants to put before Columbus voters Nov. 4. City Council is scheduled to consider the bicentennial capital improvements program, which would guide projects through 2013, at its July 7 meeting.
