As others have noted, that's quite an array of talls for a city the size of Jackson. Wonderful pics ink. I took a trip around the Midwest about 10 years ago and got quite a kick out of seeing the downtown. The CMS tower wasn't completed then, so it's nice to see it done. Thanks.

Wow, thanks for all the replies fellas. They're greatly appreciated. I did enjoy my visit, and hope to get back to Lancaster some day to explore more residential neighborhoods.

Lancaster, PA - more than a Bird in Hand
Lancaster is one dense, urban rascal. Tons of history too. It packs quite a punch in a fairly small area. I spent a few hours there a couple of months ago (on a Friday), and the weather started out great. But eventually a thunderstorm came through and I had to cut my visit. Hope to get back there sometime to cover more of the city. Lots of pics, but limited description/comments. The Northside Amtrak Train Station (under renovations) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Bristol TN/VA
So I decided to take a couple of days off from work and check out the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee/Virginia. Never been there and was curious to see it first hand. Of course the weather didn't always cooperate, but I'm use to that. :roll: 1. 2. Across the freeway from the rest area (I had to pee :roll:) 3. Nashville who? 4. The main drag downtown - State Street. VA on the left, TN on the right. I'll be starting with the Virginia side first. Here's some info about Bristol, VA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol,_Virginia 5. Train Station 6. 7. War Memorial 8. Frightening kids for years. 9. Small bandstand. 10. 11. Public Housing 12. Old Post Office building reused. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. The Virginia side of downtown does have some issues. 18. 19. The Executive Plaza looked mostly empty. 20. 21. 22. 23. 24. This one kind of surprised me. Some strange looking buildings too 25. 26. 27. 28. The front display for the Tobacco store above. 29. 30. 31. 32. 33. 34. More on this later. Now Bristol, TN. I love the way the city kind of pops up in the hills on the Interstate. Nice buildings, but the area needs some jobs to bring downtown back to life.

New Bern, NC (Lots of pics)
Back in August the daughter, wife and I went to Camp Lejeune, NC to visit the daughters Beau. While the two kids kanoodled, the wife and I took a day trip to New Bern. The weather was warm, but the town was a pleasant visit. New Bern (named after Bern Switzerland) is full of history. It was settled in 1710, and making plans for its 300th birthday next year. There'll be big goings on down there, might be worth the trip. The city has about 29,000 residents (though it doesn't really feel that big), and about 120,000 in the micropolitan area. Located at the intersection of the Trent and Neuse rivers, New Bern is about 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Needs a trim. 7. 8. Tallest downtown building - it's under renovation. 9. Old theatre which I believe is being renovated. 10. Small Arcade 11. 12. 13. ^ 14. 15. Sculpture garden. 16. 17. The old ball & chain checking out the sale at a small used book store. The owner moved here from upstate NY. Not sure (I can't remember actually), but I think this is an old school building. 41. 42. At the waterfront. 43. 44. 45. 46. 47. 48. 49. 50. 51. 52. ^ 53. 54. 55. Unsafe at any speed. 56. 57. 58. 59. It's for sale. :yes: 60. It's not all pretty or historic. 61. 62. Shriner's Temple 63. 64. 65. ^ 66. 67. 68. ^ 69. The deck was used by the chimney sweeps. 70. All the rest of the pics were taken during a tour bus ride/tour. Being as I'm an old fart, and was tired out from walking, I talked the wife into the trolley-bus tour. The only other passengers were five retired ladies in town for a day trip. What fun. :D Actually, the lady giving the tour put out a lot of good info, but of course I can't remember most of it. :roll: 71. This one kind of looked out of place. 72. Quite a few chimneys for the south. 73. 74. 75. We stopped by a really old graveyard. :sly: 76. 77. The guide told us that going to the graveyard was quite the social event waaaay back in the day. The table-looking thing was used for picnics. :wtf: 78. Back on the tour. 79. About 45 minutes into the tour we stopped at the New Bern Academy (we got to use the restroom :rolleyes: ). Syracuse, NY from October 2009
Thanks for the nice replies folks. I agree that the city has a ton of wonderful old buildings, and nice to see so many are being saved/renovated. @ AJ93, I drove through Franklin Square, but it was raining too hard at that point to take any pics, and now I have a reason to go back to the city for another visit some day.

Utica, NY - from October '09
During my trip Upstate I visited several cities (mostly smaller ones). I stopped by Utica for a bit before the rain hit. Utica is the seat of Oneida County. It has a pop ~ 60,000 (down from 100,000 in the 30s, 40s, and 50s) and is the main city in the Utica-Rome Metro area (pop approx. 300,000). The city is kind of a poster child for many places in Upstate NY. Losing manufacturing jobs & population has taken a toll on the city. Here's a link for more info (some good stuff there I never knew): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utica,_ny It's the birthplace of both the first F.W. Woolworth Five'n Dime stores empire as well as my favorite Mousketeer, Annette Funicello. Here's some pics with a few comments. And the weather held up nicely for this stop. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. $99 bridal gowns. :rolleyes: 8. At least the rubble is in a nice pile. 9. 10. And I always though it was in Philly. :shrug: 11. 12. An old gem from 1912 (renovated in 2000) the Hotel Utica. I believe the top 4 floors were added some time after the original building. The company the bought and renovated the Hotel went belly up. I think it is now for sale. 13. 14. 15. 16. The Masonic Temple 17. A small sidewalk park next to the Temple. 18. 19. 20. Another gem, the Stanley Theatre http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Theater_(Utica,_New_York) 21. 22. 23. 24. There's a small cafe (about 15 seats) on the first floor. 25. South Bend isn't the only place with a Gold Dome. 26. 27. 28. 29. 30. 31. Balconies look a bit unsafe.:( 32. 1/2 block from the above picture. 33. Syracuse, NY from October 2009
Here's some pics of my trip around Upstate back in October - it rained most of the time. :x I stopped in Syracuse (downtown) on a Sunday morning, so forgive the lack of activity. It was either raining or drizzling nearly my entire time there. Since I hadn't spent any time in the 'Cuse for over 30 years I figured I better do a fairly thourough tour of the place to check out the changes. Here's some pics, and comments(not too extensive). 1. Approaching downtown from the south on I-81. 2. On the other side of I-81 is Syracuse University. 3. So I parked near Columbus Circle next to a church. 4. Well....I'm guessing it use to be a church. 5. Onondaga County Courthouse 6. Statue of Columbus in Columbus Circle 7. 8. 9. The next 6 pics are of the old Hotel Syracuse, once THE place to be, now an abandoned old building.:( 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. Need any old hotel furniture? 15. 16. 17. 18. The Galleries of Syracuse building (a failed retail attempt now mostly empty) 19. 20. 21. 22. 23. 24. I believe the tannish building is the old Central High School. 25. 26. 27. Attractive old building (one of many in downtown Syracuse) 28. 29. There are some unattractive newer buildings, and many are empty. 30. 31. 32. 33. 34. 35. 36. I'm a big fan of rehabilitating the older buildings, especially those with charater. 37. 38. 39. I got to Clinton Square, and there was an Octoberfest getting started. 40. I didn't join in because I had to get some pics of the great old buildings around the square. 41. 42. 43. 44. 45. 46. 47. 48. 49. And here's a pic of the same area from 1904. The Erie Canal divided the last two buildings. (source - the Library of Congress) 50. There is now a one-way street where the canal flowed between the two buildings. And these are the instructions for parking: 51. Most folks get the idea. 52. But I guess there's always one. 53. 54. 55. The State Tower Building - the city's tallest 56. 57. 58. 59. Two couples got out of the big Benz and went into a little French Cafe with the white canopy. I was too soaked to join them.:( 60. 61. 62. Apparently this little filley likes to run. 63. 64. 65. 66. Make up your own joke. ;) 67. Looks like this one is getting some rehab. 68. And speaking of rehab, I would be remiss if I didn't include this beauty: 69. 70. 71. Great series of pics. I tend to enjoy seeing the grit as much as the beautiful stuff. I stopped by the city about 6 years ago, and was impressed with the skyline for a city Jackson's size. Good stuff, thanks for the tour.
