Pretty sure Portune is supportive. Todd Portune has never been a supporter of streetcars or electric light rail. He's been an out-and-out opponent of the latter. thanks for the clarification

I got a speeding ticket once. The fact that the insurance company got more out of me than the government is BS MADD at one time stated that 50-60% of the people on the road at any given time were drunk. Considering 50-60% of the population doesn't drink, that's quite a trick.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
Do we even know what Kasich sold as an investment banker, ever? Did he sell collateralized debt obligations of any kind (mortgage-backed securities or anything related)? I'd actually be curious. I find it kind of funny that people play up his financial expertise without getting into specifics of what his "expertise" actually is. Can anyone explain to me what exactly he did for Lehman? It should be possible to articulate that without revealing confidential client information. I can certainly give a good pitch for my own capabilities as a lawyer without divulging confidential client information. Ask yourself this: If you had a lot of money, and someone claiming to be a financial expert pitched themselves to you the way Kasich has been pitching himself to Ohio, would you enter into a relationship with him (or her)? I would bet that there is not a single bankrupt consumer in the entire state that actually owns a toxic asset sold by John Kasich. If I had to make a guess, I would guess that Kasich did *not* sell mortgage-backed securities, particularly not to Ohioans. What might be more accurate to say is that Lehman, along with many other Wall Street banks, created the market for them, which allowed actual predatory lenders and fly-by-night mortgage brokers in Ohio to sell their notes and therefore lend with reckless abandon, profiting more off the fees than from the income stream from the notes. This is as close as I could find. http://www.kasichfacts.com/ (under Lehman Scandal) "When Lehman Brothers went bankrupt in September 2008, Ohio’s public pension funds lost hundreds of millions of dollars. Kasich claimed that he only scheduled and attended two meetings where his Lehman Brothers colleagues pitched Ohio’s public pensions on investing in Lehman. He promised he didn’t pitch any other Ohio government entity. But in July of 2010, Congressman Kasich was caught in a lie. The Columbus Dispatch revealed that Kasich personally pitched another Ohio pension fund on Lehman Brothers. At Lehman, Kasich also opened doors for several other Lehman employees by introducing them to Ohio government officials. One of those Lehman representatives tried to sell toxic assets to Ohio pensions just weeks before Lehman Brothers collapsed."

Cincinnati Northside Notes (Part I)
Did you go past the new housing development on Virginia? Farmers Market Wednesdays from 4-7:30. There's usually some sort of entertainment. http://www.northside.net/GetInvolved/farmersmarket.shtml Jacob Hoffner Park CAIN is affiliated with North Presbyterian Church & was the organizer for the neighborhood wide yard sale. Churches Active In Northside was formed because the individual churches with their dwindling congregations couldn't afford their individual cimmunity missions so they banded together under CAIN. Northside Greenspace does some clearing in Parkers Woods & The Buttercup Valley Nature Perserve. http://www.northsidegreenspace.org/ The Village Green Foundation. A bunch of neo-hippies growing edible stuff. http://www.northsidevillagegreen.org/ Funke's Greenhouse is probably better, tho. http://www.funkes.com/ If you are interested in seeing some of the Northside homes there is going to be a House Tour on October 3 featuring about a dozen homes. http://www.northside.net/housetour/

Cincinnati: Questions on Northside Urban History.
there's some scattershot info here http://www.northside.net/History.shtml The book Scrabble referenced is by Dann Woellert who hosts Architreks tours in Northside from time to time. His family lived in the neighborhood & he is very knowledgeable on the area's history. The Souvenir History of Cumminsville that 8th & State referenced should be available at the Ohio Bookstore & is Northside History 101. The picture of a tree lined Spring Grove Ave is worth the price. :-) There is a building at the north end of the vacant lot on the NE corner of Hamilton & Blue Rock (old lumber yard). I don't know if that had anything to do with the railroad or not. And it was semi referenced, there was a train that went from Spring Grove up Crawford to points unknown.

Cincinnati: Brent Spence Bridge
While the goons at COA T have been silent on the bridge boondoggle there was a "peep" in an online streetcar debate. COAST wrote: Replying to Quimbob: "$1.6 billion on new road projects in Ohio. Billions for a new bridge for the same old cars & COA T is silent." "Quim, Still waiting for one of you trolley types to get a petition together against that bridge boondoggle... We're good for at least 100 signatures." http://cincinnati.com/blogs/letters/2010/07/29/if-we-cant-support-bus-system-why-streetcar/

Remember, also, some people aren't absorbing any info til they decide to ask, so while you give the same answer time after time it's only sinking in to one or two noggins at a time. Remember, the folks employing a campaign of FUD (Luken, COA T, GeorgeRemus1...) ad nauseam only hook a couple here & there too, ya just gotta keep repeating yourself. It reminds me of this scene from "The Candidate" where Redford starts to melt down on the campaign trail. The Candidate - "Vote once, vote twice, for Bill McKay" Scene

Thomasbw, I am pretty sure you can get from Haight to Crawford through the woods. There's Parkers Woods & Buttercup Valley Nature Preserve. Northside Greenspace has monthly twilight walks in BVNP on second Fridays. http://www.northsidegreenspace.org/calendarOfEvents.html

Bonomi Bakery in Northside is an old school bakery that's been around for awhile. Apparently it has a reputation for wedding cakes. It can get pretty crowded in the AM. John Cleves Symmes got lost in the area where Mt Airy forest is for about 3 days once. Said he was dodging wolves by night & indians by day.

What’s so conservative about federal highways?
What’s so conservative about federal highways? By William S. Lind From The American Conservative: Conservatives do not like public transportation—or so libertarians and Republican officeholders tell us. If that means we must spend hours stuck in congested traffic, so be it. Under no circumstances would conservatives ever ride public transit. Except that we are riding it, in growing numbers...... http://amconmag.com/article/2010/aug/01/00023/

Fares - there was talk here (I think) of buying time instead of entry. Was that ever officially suggested? Is anybody considering it now? I really think it is the way to go. Otherwise people will not get off. They will just go from point A to B and not stop along the way (and support businesses along the way). I know my riding habits on Metro are a lot different when I have a pass as opposed to al carte fares.

Going to UT - The 3C is only expecting a few runs a day. Maybe 5 by the time it gets to UT. A streetcar sounds awfully expensive for that.
-
Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
If UT becomes a 3C stop, the hotels & casino will likely find it worthwhile to run a shuttle bus out to UT.

Isn't it high time we liberalize our liquor laws?
The closing hours are discriminatory against 2nd shift workers. The distributor system tends to defeat competition, It's really bad in a border town like Cincinnati. There is a ton of hooch you can get in KY that you cannot get in OH.
