Cincinnati Books
A couple new releases from Little Miami Publishing (well, a new release and a rerelease): JOHN A. ROEBLING AND HIS SUSPENSION BRIDGE ON THE OHIO RIVER, by Don Heinrich Tolzmann. ISBN 978-1-932250-47-3. This is a small book that is easy to read, with lots of photos. If you live in the Greater Cincinnati area (or have visited), you are likely familiar with the beautiful bridge that spans the Ohio River from Covington, Kentucky, to Cincinnati, Ohio. This book will tell about the man who built the bridge and lots of other historical info about the type of bridge itself. ISBN 978-1-932250-47-3, $12.95. This book will be available by late July. GERMAN HERITAGE GUIDE TO THE GREATER CINCINNATI AREA, 2ND EDITION, by Don Heinrich Tolzmann. ISBN 978-1-932250-57-2, $15.95. This book was originally published in 2003 and has been a great seller. Dr. Tolzmann has updated, expanded, and revised the chapters and added a new chapter leading the reader to German food, music, church services, and other very interesting sources. He gives addresses, Web sites, phone numbers, and other information for these sources.

Cleveland: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame News & Discussion
I've got that on tape, it was an HBO show, I think. Pretty amazing assemblage of people. KD Lang and Tom Waits. Elvis Costello does a really good job as a sideman. The only bad thing about the overall performance is Springsteen's showboating. The bass player was a session man who played on some Doors lps.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
But, by the same token, some people will need to take a streetcar to get to the bus stop. One of the big reasons people don't use mass transit is because they find it confusing. I developing 99 manners of mass transit you are doing nothing more than making it more and more confusing.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Are you thinking of having the buses stop less frequently where their service parallels the streetcars ?

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
From the plans you guys seem to be making, it sounds like a trip from the biz district to Northside would require 2 - 3 transfers from streetcars to trams to streetcars. Why in hell would I do that instead of just hopping on one bus that takes me the whole way ? You might as well discuss catapulting people from Mt Adams to Clifton.

Greater Cincinnati Metro (SORTA) and TANK News & Discussion
Cranley and Setzer should meet in a cage. :-) I do think the funding of Metro should be based more on user fees than government subsidies but I also think the regions served should pay their fair shares of the subsidies. Ghiz' sentiments ring true but it still amazes me that Setzer makes so much more than the city manager. The whole management of SORTA seems extremely top heavy and it should be changed to be more like every other dept of the city.

Ohio: Scrap-Metal Crime News & Discussion
Have you seen these sculptures? Spring Grove theft images: http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/art/uploaded_images/IMG_3705-704769.JPG http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/art/uploaded_images/IMG_3704-703873.JPG http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/art/uploaded_images/IMG_3703-762479.JPG http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/art/uploaded_images/IMG_3702-761833.JPG You know that swell sculpture show at Spring Grove cemetery that I told you about a few weeks ago, well, I just got this e-mail from Lish, whose "Copper Copse 2007" is one of my favorite pieces: "Four of the five copper trees that comprised my sculpture installment, “Copper Copse 2007,” have been stolen from Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum’s 1st Bi-Annual Sculpture Show. "I am still in shock over four of my trees being stolen from a fenced, gated and security-patrolled National Historic Landmark. I am amazed at the audacity of the thief or thieves. The fact that they attempted to remove public sculptures that averaged 5.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide and succeeded has taught me a very valuable lesson: the next sculpture that I have on public display will be a lot bigger and heavier. "The local police are currently investigating the theft and I am confident that the vandal or vandals will be brought to justice. However, I am saddened on behalf of Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum, which does so much for the community – going beyond the standard functions of a cemetery and offering concerts, tours, walks and now art shows. It is such a shame that this crime has tarnished the sculpture show. "At any rate, I thought you might be interested in this development concerning the sculpture show. I think this situation makes a powerful statement about how public works of art deserve respect and protection." I turned the story over to our cops reporters, so we'll see what they find out. More as it happens ... http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/art/2007/06/what-bummer-sculptures-stolen-from.asp

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Ludlow or Central Parkway - you could connect to Cinti Stae. Maybe a better line to connect the West End to the college and then on to Northside ? The pictures I have seen of the old streetcars crossing the Ludlow Viaduct usually show a pretty flat viaduct, tho.

yeah, from what I hear, Sudan is pretty much ok if you live in the large cities. In Iraq, the only stable place seems to be in the Kurdish controlled area and it seems kinda militarized. Iraq has certainly fallen the hardest and fastest of the places listed. Haiti has pretty much sucked since day 1. The fact that it is still with us at all shows a level of perseverance and dedication to the society. Or maybe it is just being stuck on an island.

Cincinnati Sidewalk Musicians
This picture posted by Evergrey in his thread, People Enjoying Pittsburgh, brings up an issue in Cincinnati that really irks me. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=13147.0 In Cincinnati it is illegal to play "amplified" music on the sidewalk or to play in groups greater than two. This law was originally written in the 80s to accommodate a sax player who was occasionally accompanied by a percussionist. A musician can use electronics to get unique sounds but to hear them you have to use amplification. You can play a guitar through an amp with full distortion, wah, reverb & a zillion other effects quieter than an unamplified saxophone. Modern western instruments were designed to be loud. There is a whole host of software synthesizers out there, any of which can simulate a piano, but Cincinnati law requires you to haul your friggin piano out onto the street. If Cincinnati wants to cultivate the arts and creative young people they need to unleash them first. The reason you don't see the kind of variety in street music in Cincinnati that you see in other towns of it's size is not because Cincinnati doesn't have that kind of creativity - it is because it is against the law. So take you lousy barbershop quartet on home ! The law regarding performances in places like Findlay Market is slightly different. Sec. 1601-51. Loud Noise. (a) No person, firm or corporation shall create noise or sound, or permit the creation of noise or sound in such manner as to disturb the peace and quiet of a neighborhood or as to interfere with the transaction of business or other ordinary pursuits. (b) Nothing herein shall be construed to affect the reasonable giving of information for religious, educational, cultural or political purposes or the usual and reasonable operation of railways, airplanes and motor vehicles or to prohibit the reasonable use of automobile warning devices, the reasonable ringing of church bells, the reasonable and ordinary noises attendant on athletic contests or lawful public or semipublic meetings, parades or celebrations or the right of free speech guaranteed to the citizens of the United States. © The performance of one or two street musicians on unamplified musical instruments between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. or between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., for no more than a single period of 90 consecutive minutes in the vicinity of a single location and not closer than 100 feet to an open market as such are defined in § 845-3 C.M.C., shall not constitute a violation of this section. The performance of street musicians in a city market as such is designated in § 845-9 C.M.C., pursuantto a permit issued by the market manager, shall not constitute a violation of this section. Whoever violates this section is guilty of a minor misdemeanor. Whoever violates this section three or more times within a one-year period is guilty of a fourth degree misdemeanor. (Ordained by Ord. No. 158-2006, § 1, eff. 6-1-06)

That's generally referred to a tyranny of the majority (mob rule ?). A constitutional republic should be able to prevent that.
