Is Over-the-Rhine As Bad As They Say?
I was touring OTR Saturday & finally made it to Mulberry. That is FANTASTIC what folks have done over there. The market was seriously jammin. It really did look good this weekend. But everything looked good this weekend..... :-)

People are getting better rendering speeds out of Apples running XP than on their , uh, non-Apple pcs. haven't heard anything specific to 3dS but Cinema4D is supposed to.

Black owned businesses in Ohio
Is this the data they were referring to ? http://www.census.gov/csd/sbo/index.html For local businesses 4 years can be an eternity. But this doesn't tell the percentage of the black populations of the areas, either. Living in Cincinnati, where blacks aren't exactly a minority, it is appaling how few black owned businesses there are. And most of the ones that exist are very low end. I have suspected what jmecklenborg stated about inability to secure business loans as the problem. Dunno if things are that much better nowadays.

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
Interesting report from the police at today's hearing concerning the Phoenix liquor license renewal. While police have asked the owner to call if he sees criminal activity, they do not differentiate calls coming from the owner from calls concerning the specific or general address (inside the bar or out on the street) but they still argue for rejection of renewal because of the number of calls made. Seems like you get punished for calling the police too much. Laketa Cole mentioned that she had brought this point up with the police before but, apparently, they did nothing about it. They do keep track of the time calls are made and most were made after the bar is closed. The increase in crime in the area seems to coincide with the spike in crime city wide, too.

No, they give a shit about what the patrons want. If the Aronoff fans go there they will get what they want if they spend some money. Like you said, establishments change.

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
The Phoenix Cafe has been continuously open since prohibition and I think it might have been open and selling liquor during prhibition. Ladies were not permitted to sit at the bar (at tables only) and the place took a lot of heat for this practice during the women's rights movement. This is the kind of place that could be referred to as a place with character and a Cincinnati tradition. The same cannot be said for the shiny new places around it. If the patrons of the Aronoff spent some money at the place the propietor would probably oblige any requests for amenities. Instead, people are using the courts & legal manuevering to eliminate it Sure, I had my life threatened there once but it was no big deal. Why can't we at least try to let the free enterprise system work once in a while.

Wrong Numbers
I don't even answer the damn phone anymore. it's either telemarketers, hangups or wrong numbers. Fortunately, Monica, or whatever her $$#%! name was, isn't giving out my number to her teenage suitors anymore.

Helping the hard-core homeless
Saw an article in the New Yorker awhile back discussing this same basic approach http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060213fa_fact It really takes a change in perspective to grasp it, tho.

Is Over-the-Rhine As Bad As They Say?
They have at least experimented with "throwing da bums out" of specific neighborhoods. Restraining orders ? Dunno how well it works. "Earl walked right through that restraining order & put her in intensive care."

Streicher was on the tube (9?) saying Cinti police would be upping patrols in OTR as well.

This almost sounds like some kind of Jack the Ripper type of thing - targeting drug users instead of prostitutes.

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
""If you are from the suburbs and coming downtown to buy drugs or anything of that nature you need to rethink your actions. That's a bad move," said Captain Kimberly Frey of Cincinnati Police." I thought the increased penalties for pot possesion were supposed to take care of this.

Cincinnati: Northside: American Can Factory Lofts
Looks like the folks developing the American Can bldg will, now, also be developing the old lumber yard that Walgreens lost interest in. http://www.northside.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=516 SECOND COMMUNITY MEETING WITH THE DEVELOPERS Next Monday, April 3rd, at North Presbyterian Church, at 6:30 P.M., the Northside Business Association will host the second COMMUNITY MEETING with developers, Bloomfield/Schon + Partners, who are now developing both the American Can Building and the former Myron Johnson Lumber Yard site. The first meeting with the developers took place on March 20th, at the monthly Northside Community Council meeting. There was a good turn out and a lot of ideas were suggested. Steve Bloomfield led the discussion and brainstorming session. At the next meeting, on April 3rd, partner Ken Schon and Project Architect Jose Garcia will lead the discussion, providing business owners and residents, including those who attended the first meeting, an opportunity to express their ideas, suggestions and comments concerning the project. This meeting will also be an opportunity for the Developer/Architect team to communicate to us their response to the first brainstorming session, including any design concepts they may have generated. Developing the Myron Johnson and the American Can Building sites together as one comprehensive commercial/ residential development is a great if not extraordinary opportunity for our neighborhood and for Cincinnati. The meeting on the 3rd is one more step in this process of shaping the future of Northside. Please attend. Robert Sala, President Northside Business Association

Bicycling Recommendations
I got a Marin Larkspur a few years ago. Do not get an aluminum frame. Too rigid. The components do not seem to be too good. I have had to replace the fancy hand shifter thingies twice in 3 - 4 years. Chains & gears wore down in that time & needed replacement. Brake mechanism is always getting gunked up. Overall, I am not too thrilled with it. It is a cheaper model, I don't know how the more expensive ones fare. I got it at Bio Wheels who left Clifton for the far east somewhere. I have dealt with Campus Cyclery once in that time & they were ok. They have a tendency (or they used to) to try to sell you what they want & not what you want. If you are not sure what you want, tho it may not matter.

Your preferred angle of pizza slices
uh, 6 ? Cassano's (Dayton) salty pizza squares are ok, too. In a recent visit to Rhode Island I was introduced to "Pizza Strips". Probably one of the worst edible (?) things in the world. They sell 'em at the check out counters at gas stations next to the Slim Jims.
