Federal, local funds spent on scenic beautification. In the past two decades, more than $13.4 billion in federal transportation funding has been spent on 27,000 enhancement projects, devoted to scenic beautification, bike trails and historic buildings. In the Miami Valley, federal and local funds have paid for transportation enhancements off Interstate 70 in Huber Heights, Ohio 48 in Englewood and Interstate 675 at Far Hills Avenue. http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/springfield-news/public-landscaping-in-area-costs-billions-1401601.html

  5. Not all Republicans are anti-Streetcar. One of the biggest boosters of the project is a Republican: United States Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. & William Lind http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_S._Lind But yeah, generally the neocon leaders of the Republican party are an issue.
  6. Just saw the end of a fairly slick video promo for the streetcar with some chick announcer on City Cable. She used the word "progressive" about a hundred times in just the little bit I saw. Is this new? Is it on the intertubes at all? I realize I am one of the few who actually watches that cable channel.....

Loss of smokers hurts Ohio’s pocketbook $1.2B of state funds are linked to tobacco use. "Hundreds of billions of cigarettes and other tobacco products sold each year account for about 5 percent of Ohio’s tax-related revenue and help the state pay off billions of dollars owed in bonds. But because the $1.2 billion of state funds tied to tobacco use can rise and fall on smokers’ habits, Ohio — like all states — has closely monitored the smoking rate that declined faster than many expected." http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/ohio-news/loss-of-smokers-hurts-ohios-pocketbook-1400612.html
  9. But he did succeed..... "It was my mission to see Cincinnati finally have an entertainment district and become a better city. ~ I did what I set out to do." holy crap I don't think those cigars are tobacco.....

  11. "Loved ones aren't the only thing buried in the 122-year-old Lowellville Cemetery in eastern Ohio. Deep underground, locked in ancient shale formations, are lucrative quantities of natural gas. Whether to drill for that gas is causing soul-searching as cemeteries — including veterans' final resting places in Colorado and Mississippi — join parks, playgrounds, churches and residential backyards among the ranks of places targeted in the nation's shale drilling boom. Opponents say cemeteries are hallowed ground that shouldn't be sullied by drilling activity they worry will be noisy, smelly and unsightly. Defenders say the drilling is so deep that it doesn't disturb the cemetery and can generate revenue to enhance the roads and grounds." http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/ohio-news/gas-under-cemeteries-raises-money-moral-questions-1399322.html
  12. I don't believe this for a moment. Mark Mallory is one of the most politically savvy individuals in the region. I cannot believe that Mayor Mallory would go hat in hand to Chabot seeking his support for Streetcar funding. Frankly the story lacks credibility, particularly considering it's source is pathological liar Mark Miller. I'd assume Mallory did address the congressman since he ~cough cough~ represents the city. that being said, I love the religious wording COA T continually uses to somehow make all their BS into some kind of religious epic.
  13. Some in the funeral business are seeking state approval for a new and controversial technique for disposing of human bodies through chemical decomposition. The technique, alkaline hydrolysis, involves placing a body inside a stainless-steel cylinder machine that is used to accelerate natural decomposition, shrinking years into hours. The process uses lye to break down corpses into liquid, proteins and dry bone residue. http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/springfield-news/controversial-liquid-cremation-sought-in-ohio-1398630.html

Anderson TWP based COA T has no problems with this crap in their own back yard? A trustee with both business & personal ethics issues is ok but they are obsessed with Cincinnati issues..... Anderson Trustee accused of indecency "O’Brien was elected trustee in 2009, two months after he was banned for life from the securities industry by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority." http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120629/NEWS0106/306290119/Anderson-Trustee-accused-indecency?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE
  16. From the Fishwarp http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120628/EDIT01/306280143/Streetcar-should-get-federal-funds Streetcar should get federal funds U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, whose district includes downtown Cincinnati, Over-the-Rhine and Clifton Heights, was so eager to stop federal investment in the streetcar in those communities that he slipped a one-line amendment in a transportation bill forbidding any federal funds appropriated under that bill to be used for that project.
  17. In a radio talk show during the last election cycle a caller told Chabot he was a former supporter. Chabot called him a liar. class act. I supported him on city council but after that he was really obvously just a hack career politician.
  18. CHabot frequently is listed as ® Westwood. Is it common for a US Congressman to list his neighborhood instead of his city? Anyway this is clearly vindictive political BS. Why JUST this light rail project. What I heard earlier, however seemed to indicate everything but roads for cars was eliminated. This includes bike lanes & sidewalks as well. Seems the only jobs these guys want to create are short term construction jobs & NOT the long term goals of the streetcar.
  19. I know a guy in NKY who married a D person. It'd be kinda weird to try to join the forum & find your family name banned. Apparently the Akron Beacon Journal bans 61 variants of the F word.

On Orbitz, Mac Users Steered to Pricier Hotels "Orbitz Worldwide Inc. has found that people who use Apple Inc.'s Mac computers spend as much as 30% more a night on hotels, so the online travel agency is starting to show them different, and sometimes costlier, travel options than Windows visitors see." I wonder if they will start directing Linux users towards cheaper rooms, & services... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304458604577488822667325882.html
  21. preparedness is ok but this really comes off as fear mongering to me World Choir Games concern: Mystery illness "Confronting an illness they haven’t seen before is the biggest fear for local health officials heading into the World Choir Games. As 15,000 participants from 64 countries and 22 states prepare to descend on Greater Cincinnati for the event that runs July 4-14, health officials are preparing a set of measures that goes beyond even the normal planning for a one-time event drawing thousands of people." http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120626/NEWS/306260069/Are-mystery-illnesses-Choir-Games-concern-?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

  24. ^What Ben described is exactly the same as the Northside CC. You have to attend 3 consecutive meetings to vote there, tho. They also hand out a printed sheet outlining the meeting's agenda so you will have an idea how long to wait till you get to the crap you are inneressed in.
