Has anybody read Small Gritty & Green ? It got a fairly good review in The American Conservative. Discusses recycling mid size industrial midwestern cities like Flint, MI & Youngstown, OH. http://www.amazon.com/Small-Gritty-Green-Industrial-Environments/dp/0262016699/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1340479563&sr=1-1&keywords=small+gritty+and+green
  3. Impaired boating in Ohio ranked third worst "Ohio is stepping up patrols with a focus on impaired boating after tying for third nationally last year in alcohol-related boating accidents as the state’s watercraft registrations reached an all-time high." http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/springfield-news/impaired-boating-in-ohio-ranked-third-worst-1395380.html
  4. A sister of mine moved to Cincinnati (North College Hill) about 4 years ago. I told her this but she hates hates hates downtown so she remembers "Big Strong Men Will Very Rarely Eat Pork Chops", but doesn't know the names of the downtown streets at all.
  5. The annual tour of homes in Champaign County will help fund the renovation of the Sowles Hotel in downtown Urbana. The Historic Home and Garden Tour, now in its 20th year, will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/springfield-news/home-tour-will-fund-downtown-urbana-hotel-renovation-1394875.html
  6. Recently heard that about 22% of working college graduates say they don't really use their college education at their jobs.

It was bad enough when I chose "beef" over chicken for my megaGonza burrito especiale at Taco Bell and the clerk informed me they only had steak & chicken - no beef, but when I asked the chick at the meat counter at a Kroger in their hometown of Cincinnati for calf's liver & she had no idea what I was talking about til I ambiguated my query to beef liver..... well, I just don't know support your local county fairs folks
  8. Is this common in other towns? Over at the Business Courier they also say Duke will want to be able to shut down the streetcar operations when they need to work too close. Is that common policy? http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/blog/2012/06/duke-energy-floats-streetcar-solution.html
  9. minnesota also has a gazillion BIG mosquitoes. I don't think tax rates (within reason) are as big an issue for businesses as red tape & endless bureaucracy. They want a responsive government so they can get on with what they want to do.

and a huge boost in tourism
  11. Some states have been working to loosen licensing requirements dictated by industry organizations. They claim it unfairly protects established workers from competition. Florida, Michigan & Minnesota are looking at reforming regulations. California, Louisiana & Arizona are the strictest while Kentucky, Vermont & Wyoming are the loosest. This deals with cosmetologists, auctioneers, locksmiths, etc.
  12. Press Club of Clevo honors Ohio journalism. The Business Courier made the list. The Enquirer is ominously missing. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/press-club-cleveland-honors-best-013000352.html
  13. I love how people try to make everything into some kind of biblical epic struggle of good v. evil. The Rebloodlicans really get into it. Democrrips just tell ya you're racist. ^^The state has a .csv of municipal tax rates somewhere.

The book I mentioned, Fighting Traffic, focusses primarily on the transformation of the roadways in the first part of the 20th century.
  15. People across the country are opting out of traditional burial. Currently in Ohio your only non burial option is cremation in a cremation chamber with 9,000 rules & regulations. Other options could be open air cremation, liquefaction & there's some new process that's kinda like freeze drying. If Ohio would ease up on some of these ridiculous restrictions on the funeral industry we could charge people admission. Similarly Ohio's liquor industry is insanely regulated & stifles entrepreneurship. Maybe if we could elect politicians who believe in smaller, less intrusive government instead of ignorant religionist neo-cons, we could get this poop done.
  16. I made a suggestion based specifically on this thread constantly going off track on the forum issues section. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,27513.0.html

Does this forum or any forum software have a function that can look at a thread & suggest similar threads that are current? That is - a thread about the Cincinnati streetcar frequently goes into politics which leads to discussions of politicians & veers off topic. If councilman Jones were mentioned there & in the Cincinnati Council thread, a "suggestion" could be displayed at the top/bottom of the page with links to the other threads where Jones is being discussed. Sort of a "People are also talking about..." Seems like the app would just have to look at words & strings within a limited time period to puke up the links. It wouldn't be much different than Amazon suggestions or ad placement software. Of course it would be a further load on the server & I've noticed the heavy server load warning a lot lately.
  18. Why would they? It's kinda like big time wrestling - they make a steady profit by continuing the conversation (regardless of how moronic it is). If there is something that comes up that is definitive, it's all over, there's nothing else to exploit. That's no way to run a business.

  22. "Members of the Champaign County Preservation Alliance hope to turn an abandoned but historic downtown hotel into a new business that will draw visitors to the city. Demolition began this week on the rear extension of the Sowles Hotel, a three-story brick structure in the 100 block of Scioto Street that dates to the early 1800s. Once renovated, the front portion of the hotel can be a centerpiece highlighting the growth occurring downtown, said Rich Colvin, president of the CCPA. “That building is crucial for the economic development downtown,” Colvin said. “There’s been a revitalization." http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/springfield-news/group-tries-to-save-old-hotel-1388524.html

on a Mac, under Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP, it lists the router address. Should be similar in Windows. You shouldn't have to configure anything, tho. heck, even Linux is good at just hooking up automatically these days.
  25. Not knowing the specs for what the done guys want, I don't know why they would do this. Maybe they do. But, yeah, the Champion city does some weird shit.
