Higher prices to park seems like it could potentially have the effect high gas prices had. Only difference is you would have to be someone that truly wants to visit the location enough to pass up on driving. Essentially the high cost of parking would encourage people to think about cheaper more cost efficient alternatives such as riding transit. Driving up ridership, increasing (some) revenue while the transit agency benefits from the parking tax money on top of that. I already don't park downtown I just ride the red line. Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I thought they were highly visible when I visited. The thing about the flats is unless you passed it on a boat ride, saw it from the west bank, or are exploring you don't know about it. This is true at least from people I've talked to. When people mention downtown I always ask, "have you visited the flats" and they'd ask "where is that?". Downtown is easy to explore a lot of times but having a neighborhood tucked at a bottom of a hill, connected to an unknown train line hurts it's potential without any type of advertisement or marketing. EDIT: Now I haven't visited at night in a little while so I don't know the current climate. Crop Rocks may very well have some deeper issues going on. With flipside potentially closing as well it the closures issue is something to look out for, that would make 4 since it opened. I understand restaurants close all the time but in the same development? That's a little worrisome. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

So eventually RTA has to replace the HL fleet. How much would it cost to fit the buses with rail equipment instead of buying a new fleet of LRVs? Edit: Nvm I feel I've asked this before. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

Not sure I understand. What DMU cars? RTA isn't considering them because they have no non-electrified routes. The Tokyu cars are more durable because their carbodies are stainless steel and their floors are steel, not wood like the Breda cars. The Tokyu cars also don't cross streets at grade so they don't get any road salt in their undercarriages and wheel bogies. So the durability of the Tokyu cars means that GCRTA could split the 45-car order roughly in half to spread the cost across two four-year federal formula capital periods. The feds award state-of-good-repair and other capital funds to urban transit systems based on a formula of population stats, transit ridership and other demographic factors that don't favor shrinking cities like Greater Cleveland. Those formula funds can be taken one project or one year at a time, or if there is a big capital expense (like buying a new fleet of railcars), the transit agency can get its entire capital allocation it would normally get over four years for a single expenditure. GCRTA could probably get the federal government to pay about half of the $280 million cost of a 45-car standardized fleet (RTA would like pay the remainder unless it somehow gets the state to kick in some meaninful funds). Even so, if RTA takes that $140 million from its next, entire four-year federal capital funding allocation, GCRTA will be unable to afford any other capital improvements in that period. GCRTA should probably spread that rail fleet purchase over two four-year periods, with the Tokyu fleet replaced last. I solely mentioned DMU because I see it mentioned so frequently on the board that I assumed that was the direction RTA was going. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

Question: Since the quality of the Tokyu cars have been pretty good, would it be out of the question to go back to them or is their use of EMU cars over DMU (from what I've seen) cause for them to not be considered? Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

Cleveland Area TOD Discussion
I find it so amazing that the area that has such high TOD is one of the most neglected. East Cleveland at the Windermere station, and especially the Superior station which is busting at the seems to have mixed use development/residential built around it. The street directly behind the station has homes that could be renovated, the high-rise by it could be renovated and the store fronts with apartments on top would add to the TOD use. Not to mention the gas station and the corner and the former white castle can be razed and built upon to bolster ridership. Add in the plaza/shopping center and you could create an unbelievable boost in ridership solely due to a redeveloped area from the Superior station to the intersection of Euclid and Superior. Will they ever fix the air at the Windermere station? That heat had been blasting year round for a long time now. It's like death during summer months. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

Cleveland: North Collinwood / Waterloo Arts District: Development and News
Historic La Salle Theatre in Collinwood ready for a $4.1M makeover starting today (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio – Depending on how you count it, the historic La Salle Theatre on East 185th Street in Collinwood is embarking on its second, third or fourth life. Built in 1927 as movie palace, it languished in the 1990s before becoming a vintage auto showroom and then going vacant for about a decade until now. The nonprofit Northeast Shores Development Corp., which helped rescue the building from foreclosure and possible demolition in 2009, is scheduled to launch a $4.1 million renovation Tuesday that will turn the structure into an arts, media, and community center by next May. The theater, which could seat 800 for performances or 450 for weddings, dinners and other catered events, will be used as a performing arts rehearsal or recording space, an exhibit hall, a stage for high school theater and arts programs, and as a meeting space for businesses and community organizations. http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2016/08/collinwoods_historic_la_salle.html#incart_gallery

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
It's most definitely a frequent thing. I'd say 75% of the time that I'm on the HealthLine or Red Line, someone is blasting music. And yes, it's not unique to Cleveland by any means, but it's still extremely annoying (except for the guy who was playing Motown music on my bus yesterday, it was only slightly annoying then). My biggest frustration is when it is happening in close proximity to the bus/train operator and they say nothing about it. I just can't fathom how someone thinks that doing that is socially acceptable I guess different experiences for different folks. I usually never experience it on the trains or HL when I ride. In regards to the operators, with the experiences that they have experienced with violence from passengers they may not want to speak up and risk a passenger attacking them. I've also seen operators speak up and the passengers not listen to them. Sometimes you can't force some one to do anything and they may not see the risk in pushing the issue as worth it. ^^ I never have seen or have experienced any harassment and didn't windermere open in like '97? That's almost 20 years ago. I also think playing music too loud is an overblown complaint. Especially for a system that serves an urban/city environment. Issues that like come, it isn't a frequent thing. Try taking the subway in larger cities you surely will have those experiences more frequently maybe worse.

Cleveland's Hough--50 years after the riot
Couple of things: 1.) As a neighborhood of majority black residents at its core the lack of trust from outside institutions doesn't surprise me. As a black man myself black people have been shafted and tricked so many times in the past by various organizations and institutions that hearing about more interest and plans probably has them skeptical due to the past. This is especially true if the majority of the residents voicing their opinion are older, specifically the age group that dealt with the older race tensions. Until they can be convinced truly of the benefits of change they won't budge. 2.) A lot of these people are lifelong residents of Hough. They are aware of the effects of what essentially in their eyes is gentrification of a neighborhood, their neighborhood. The idea of gentrification means they will be pushed out of their neighborhood, something they refuse to allow. I assure you as a lifelong resident of an impoverished neighborhood that is their mindset. These developers or institutions need to circumvent TJ Dow and actually talk and explain to the residents their plan and the benefits. As well as reassure them that they will not be pushed out. This is apparently the only sign notifying people of the change. The escalators by the public square side or the second level stairs by FYE don't have them according to the RTA worker. During my short time there I saw 3 people mistakenly swipe there cards trying to go westbound. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

I see what people mean about the track platform not being built to last. It seems like something you would build a deck with. They also finally wrote on a piece of paper to inform people that the elevator is out of service. The attendant told me that it is out of service because it wasn't built to withstand these constant usage. Finally the same attendant told me that the stop will be in use until Thanksgiving. I don't know if that was known or not. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

I thought the same thing but when she compared our downtown to theirs she said that there isn't much to be desired in Memphis' downtown besides a couple of things, literally. She also kept saying "this has to be a big tourist city" due to its beauty and large amounts of things to do. Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk

Cincinnati: State of Downtown
Sort of like Heinen's for Downtown Cleveland. They typically built grocery stores in suburban areas and took a chance to build an urban full service grocery store inside of an old bank building (beautiful btw). Anyway I saw someone use the chicken or the egg situation and seeing Heinen's take a chance in Downtown Cleveland means to me that you have to find a grocer that believes in the potential of your downtown and see the longterm vision. Downtown Cleveland has about 14,000 residents and growing, not the ideal 20-25K you see thrown around and the grocery store is a hit with residents. Now having around 90-100K workers downtown helps but the point stands, Cincinnati needs to find a grocer that see's the bigger picture. Good luck! Edit: Just realized I'm talking in an urban forum so you know all of this DUH! lol

I'm sure they are going to follow a similar blueprint to the town homes already there when it comes to landscaping.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Didn't know where to place this. My girlfriends sorority had their national conference over the weekend, ending on Tuesday. Since I am such a Cleveland homer I made sure to talk to the some of them about their time here so far (not all there were hundreds). Everyone said "you have such a beautiful city" and that they've enjoyed themselves and they only experienced Downtown! One person stood out though. There was this woman from Tennessee, Memphis to be exact who was college age about to graduate. As I talked to her she constantly spoke about how much she loved Cleveland, how are downtown is so beautiful and green especially when compared to Memphis. She loved Public Square, was amazed at the Galleria and was blown away at Tower City and the train station below, specifically saying "Oh my gosh! There is a train station in the mall!" Capturing it so her friends home could witness. I even gave her a tour of University Circle and Little Italy and she loved that taking pictures and video throughout the day. Throughout her entire trip she said "I'm moving to Cleveland!" and even planned a trip back to the city for later this month. All in all Cleveland really impressed and did a great job over these past few days and weeks showing off its true beauty. I LOVE CLE!
