Ohio: Historic Preservation Tax Credit News & Discussion
This is fantastic. It will be so heartening to see something finally happen with 668 (aka 666) Euclid! So I guess they're announcing the winners in waves? I don't see the Capitol Theatre on there. 5 Cleveland projects get $30 million in preservation tax credits $30 million via state tax breaks aids 5 projects in historic urban buildings Friday, November 16, 2007 Shaheen Samavati Plain Dealer Reporter The state awarded more than $30 million in tax credits Thursday for five downtown Cleveland renovation projects. Cleveland was the biggest benefactor during the first round of the state's new historic-preservation tax credit awards.

Here is what Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson proposes as an environment-friendly building policy: Single-family rehabilitation projects: Would need to meet Ohio Home Weatherization Assistance Program standards - air leakage reduction and improved insulation and ductwork. Also would have to adhere to federal guidelines for energy-efficient hot water tanks and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. See odod.state.oh.us; www.energystar.gov New single family homes: Would have to meet Enterprise Green Communities standards, including energy and water conservation measures. See enterprisecommunity.org New or rehabilitated multifamily homes: Would have to meet either Enterprise Green Communities standards or be certified in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council. See usgbc.org/leed SOURCE: City of Cleveland

Cleveland: Random Development and News
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but the Terminal Tower has been lit up (red) every night lately. It started around the time of the Indians being in the playoffs, and I thought it was because of that, but the lighting has continued since. It's nice to have the TT back in our night skyline!

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I'll say it one more time, for those too (ahem) busy to read the previous page: These images are not designs, they're glorified massings. No architectural designs have been completed yet. As for retail mix... There may be a few small merchandisers, but nothing on the order of a Gap or Sephora. From what I have heard they are planning to go after local merchants to give it a more authentic flavor.
-
Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Don't worry, that's just a conceptual drawing to give an idea of massing. What's built won't look like that, I have it on authority from a good source!

Cleveland: Cleveland Institute of Art Expansion
I wouldn't go that far -- I would say it looks like a very well designed parking garage. But a parking garage nonetheless. Main entrance off Euclid = boo, hiss.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
^^I thought Big Italy was closer to downtown than that -- like E 30s-50s and Central-ish? An area that is now almost entirely public housing.

Thanks MTS! Just busy with work. I still pop up every now and then. :)

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
^^I like the backside of the student center a lot more than the Euclid side. Would be nice if the two facades could be reversed. This building flirts with Euclid without asking it out on a date. Tease.

Cleveland - Where to live for $150,000?
Try the Water Street condos in the Warehouse District. They just went for sale and I know there are/were some units in your price range. They also do rent-to-own. Nice building near all the action but a little off the beaten path too. http://www.waterstreetapts.com/

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
It's far from certain that the Ameritrust Tower will be saved. As the article states, the County is now accepting demolition bids. Ferchill, one of the interested parties, said in a previous article that he advocates the site be cleared to make it more attractive to private developers. If Frangos got it, it might be saved. (Ironic, since he's one of downtown's biggest surface parking mavens, directly or indirectly responsible for many demolitions over the years.)

Cleveland: Retail News
^^Cool. I worry they won't have much visibility in that location though. They'd be better off in Gordon Square/Detroit-Shoreway.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
That's right. The working name is Toast. It's being developed by a member of the Cleveland Public Theatre board.

The Dating Thread
I agree with MayDay's first post whole-heartedly -- bigger cities may offer higher numbers of dates, but quality is another matter. I lived in New York for 7 years and it was difficult to maintain a relationship there because people (myself included) tended to keep looking over their shoulders for someone better. It leads to a lot of anxiety. If novelty and a lot of hook-ups are what you're looking for, big cities are great. Otherwise, they can be unsatisfying. If I had to generalize, I'd say there are proportionately way more dateable gay men in Cleveland than in New York. That is, gay men here actually have the time and desire to commit to a relationship. They tend to have family around, which can have a grounding effect. It may be tough finding one, but once you do it can be pretty wonderful. (And yes, I am speaking as someone who has found someone, so I'm probably biased. ;) ) I know this started as a straight thread, but I couldn't help adding my piece!

Demolition in National Register districts
For all the preservation experts out there: What does it take to allow a building in a national register historic district to be demolished?

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I ate at Crop last night in the Warehouse District... wonderful wonderful wonderful. Very cozy ambiance, good service. Sunday night is prix fixe, $23.50 each which is really decent for the quality of food. We had the citrus infused chicken breast and thigh and the butternut squash ravioli, along with probably the best salad i've ever had (spinach, fennel, homemade pickles, fresh ginger) and a hearty apple crisp. Loved it.

Good idea. How do we start?

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
His personality has very little if anything to do with the delays in the WD. The biggest stumbling block as I understand it is the financing gap. That's why he was going after a sales tax TIF (maybe still is) and now landing a big office tenant: It would help close the gaping hole in his financing.

Cleveland rave in O Magazine
Anyone willing to admit they subscribe to O Magazine, or have access to it? There's apparently a very positive story about Cleveland on page 94 of the current issue. Not available online, so it would have to be scanned...
