Where is Home?
I did a study abroad program and then an archaeological dig in Greece while in college; I lived there for six months. After I graduated, I went to Edinburgh for six months to do the BUNAC work-exchange program.

I'm glad Ignatius is there, of course, but it would be nice to see them make better use of the gated parking lots fronting on Lorain.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
I must say, I don't understand why ColDayMan feels the need to inject so many snarky comments into the Cleveland threads. As a state, we benefit from -- and shouldn't be threatened by -- all Ohio cities' successes, not just those of our hometown. I love Cleveland, and that's why I'm posting in this thread, rather than tearing down Columbus or Cincinnati in theirs.

Is the arts center going to be built on a surface parking lot, or have they managed to find one more historic building to demolish?

Cleveland: Random Development and News
I don't think this has been posted yet... New projects need destination stores Wednesday, July 19, 2006 By KIM CROW PD Style Editor There are big plans afoot for downtown Cleveland. Developers Scott Wolstein, Bob Stark and others are planning major projects for the Flats and the Warehouse District. There is also the proposed Avenue District proj ect (near the Galleria). Every plan includes a mix of housing, restau rants and retail. The plans are in the "vague" phase as the developers acquire the necessary property and funding, all the messy details that need to be solved before they can sign a list of tenants. But the right mix of stores is crucial for the projects' success. If it means yet another Gap or Limited outpost, why would anyone bother coming downtown? What we need are destination stores, stores that aren't found at every mall in every county in Ohio. Cleveland alone can't support two upscale, downtown shopping centers, as the fading Tower City and the Galleria have proved. We'll need to draw people in from all over. Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Stores! ;) No, actually I wouldn't want another indoor shopping mall downtown. Yucko. But I think retail is the biggest amenity currently lacking from downtown. Maybe Stark will fix that. As for the convention center/hall, I like the rec center idea. The only problem I see with that is that many of the apartment buildings downtown have their own gyms -- so the rec center would have to be something really spectacular to lure people out of their buildings.

LA sprawl from the air
I've been to LA only once, and I remember being horrified by the view from the airplane. I've never seen anyplace that looks so apocalyptic from the air (particularly if you're coming in on a smoggy day). Once you're on the ground, though, there are some interesting places to be explored.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Good point, Wim. It would be interesting to tally up exactly how many industrial businesses are left down there, how much truck traffic they generate and what routes those trucks use. If everyone could work together, I bet trucks could be routed onto certain roads where little or no residential development is planned.

CLEVELAND - Taste of Tremont festival
Great photos, MayDay! Tremont is an amazing success story. I went to "Taste," too, and loved it. The food was great, and there were also a ton of attractive guys running around... I also noted that a new place called Lago is slated to open in the old Theory space. And Grumpy's said it would be open in its new space on W. 14th next to Lincoln Park Pub by September.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Police using computers to track crime trends in Cleveland, react Monday, July 24, 2006 John P. Coyne Plain Dealer Reporter Cleveland has added a new tool to its crime-fighting arsenal - a computer-driven, crime-analysis program that gives commanders nearly instant information on neighborhood offenses. Called CitiStat, it is an offshoot of a program started in New York City in the 1990s to reduce that city's violence. Officials there credit the program with helping cut serious crime by 27 percent in two years. ... http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/115372986777640.xml&coll=2

St. Louis venture cap fund opens Cleveland outpost By BRANDON GLENN 6:00 am, July 24, 2006 Northeast Ohio health care companies have another potential source of investment money, as St. Louis venture capital fund Oakwood Medical Investors has opened a one-person outpost in Cleveland. The office is in the BioEnterprise Corp. building in University Circle. BioEnterprise is a nonprofit that assists local health care companies. Steve Girouard, former executive director of the $23 million Atrial Fibrillation Innovation Center at the Cleveland Clinic, is Oakwood’s Northeast Ohio representative and holds the title of director of cardiovascular investments. Dr. Girouard said Cleveland was an attractive place for Oakwood to open an office due to the presence of health care stalwarts such as the Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals of Cleveland and BioEnterprise. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20060724/SUB/60721032

Cleveland BioLabs betting on future of bioscience in Northeast Ohio
Cleveland BioLabs takes leap into choppy waters for IPOs By BRANDON GLENN 6:00 am, July 24, 2006 If recent months are any indication, the stock of Cleveland Clinic spinoff Cleveland BioLabs Inc. could be in for a bumpy ride after going public last week. Many initial public offerings, and biotech IPOs in particular, have struggled as risk-averse investors seem less willing to wait the years that often must pass before young biotech companies can make the significant progress necessary to generate large investor returns. “The market for all IPOs is not good,” said Les Funtleyder, a health care analyst with Miller Tabak & Co. LLC in New York. “More often than not, it hasn’t been good for health care and particularly bad for biotech.” http://crainscleveland.com/article/20060724/SUB/60721038&SearchID=73297452011986

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
^Love that last quote -- Corna is exactly right. It doesn't sound like he's asking industries to move if they don't want to, so I don't understand why Barricelli et al. are so upset. Great to hear about this moving along! I have more confidence in this project happening than in just about any other downtown, because of K&D's record of quiet accomplishment.

Lot purchases set K&D Flats plan in motion Apartment developer, Nautica officials in talks to execute West Bank improvement By STAN BULLARD 6:00 am, July 24, 2006 Apartment and condo developer K&D Group is snatching up property and is talking with Nautica entertainment complex owner Jeff Jacobs to map out steps the two largest landowners on the West Bank of the Flats can take to prepare the area for more redevelopment. K&D already has opened its wallet to buy a ¾-acre parking lot at River, Center and Elm streets in order to extend its reach along the West Bank. The lot K&D bought June 21 from Riverfront West Partners for $320,000 is more than a quarter-mile north toward Lake Erie from its 500-unit Stonebridge Apartments and Condominium complex, which hugs the Cuyahoga River.... http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20060724/PENDING/607240324/1018

Does anyone know what's going on in the old Metro Joe's/Cafe Noir space beside St. Pat's? There have been people working in there and today I noticed some wood frame has been installed inside the entrance way, apparently for a new wall or vestibule...

Cleveland: CWRU West Quad Project
I wish they had sold the Mt. Sinai buildings for residential redevelopment and then located the West Quad elsewhere, where empty land was already available (and let's face it, land is plentiful if you venture a few blocks west into Hough and Fairfax, though I know Fannie Miller might object). Those old buildings were just so beautiful. Still, what's done is done, and like Weimar I'm glad to see this still being described as a "high, high priority" for CWRU.
