  1. Article from the PD about "LaunchHouse" which is an incubator for new businesses in the tech sector mostly (http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/01/launchhouse_duo_hopes_to_nurtu.html). They're in Shaker Hts and the article says: "The former Zalud Oldsmobile dealership was 23,000 square feet of emptiness on busy Lee Road, near Chagrin Boulevard, when Goldstein pitched his idea to Shaker Heights Mayor Earl Leiken in 2010.....Leiken envisioned young professionals with lunch budgets, foot traffic in a major retail district, an infusion of cool. His city spent $500,000 renovating the dealership and handed the keys to Goldstein and Caldwell rent-free for four years. In exchange, Shaker gains a small equity stake in LaunchHouse companies. And something more." Bold for emphasis. Municipalities owning private firms (or parts of it)---is there a precedent for this? is this a conflict of interest or fully legal?
  2. Facebook: "The page you requested was not found." In any event, how silly of the aquarium to put them on facebook instead of their own page.
  3. ^I hope all 3 can remain strong in the market. NY used to be the 1st city pair for CLE---now its around 3rd--it'd be great to see NY return to that spot.
  4. 5x daily is a big addition to the 5x daily AA and 8x daily on UA/CO (for the NY market as a whole). I hope it doesn't mean that DL knows something we don't about AA or UA. The extra service is great for CLE. Here's the outbound published schedule for July 17, 2012: Dep Arr Eqp Dep Arr Frq (flights per week) JFK CLE CRJ 1525 1740 7 JFK CLE CRJ 1910 2110 7 LGA CLE ERJ 0740 0945 7 LGA CLE ERJ 1000 1155 7 LGA CLE ERJ 1330 1522 7 LGA CLE ERJ 1635 1825 7 LGA CLE ERJ 1900 2054 7
  5. A sign for the interstate highway system in the middle of downtown--just outside the visitor's center---in the 1st photo above showing the new visitor's center--is horrible and truly sends the wrong message. it screams, 'get out of here, fast!'. can that be taken down?

Regarding marketing, i agree with dropping 'north coast'. it was born out of a shame of being from cleveland--and not saying the word "Cleveland". The more the term "Cleveland" is used the more people hear it and the name recognition spreads. Remember, Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo---even Rochester--are on America's "North Coast". Just take the harbor for example. Could you imagine if instead of "New York Harbor" it was called "East Coast Harbor"? Sounds mighty stupid.....that's how we sound...

8ShadesofGrey--Hey congrats on the new book---will check out a full copy as soon as I can. I'll try to make it to the launch party if I can. Looking forward to reading it. I noticed you got it on bn.com---that's excellent!

The State has hired KPMG to examine the feasibility and benefits/drawbacks from Turnpike privatization. http://www.tollroadsnews.com/node/5631
  9. Don't forget the West Side Market. The market played a key role in the continued resurgence of Ohio City, which one of the hottest neighborhoods right now. Someone had mentioned the Great Lakes Brewing Co. above---the market would tie in nicely with that. Also, CLE will host the International Public Markets convention in 2012, for which the city and the market were sponsors. Cleveland beat out London and some other cities that were in the running to host the meeting.
