  1. I dont know if anyone else has heard any info on the proposed upgrade to I-270/1-71 (North Side)? I was reading in the Janurary issue of Columbus Monthly that ODOT is planning on building a stacked flyover ramp from I-270 eastbound to I-71 northbound to replace the aging and very dangerous loop ramp. I looked on the ODOT site but any info about that interchange was from 2004.
  2. City Center wasn't like that at one time. At one time, we had Gucci, Henri Bendel, Ralph Lauren, Jacobsons, and Marshall Fields. We were the shopping destination of Ohio! How we long for those days again. I think they should turn City Center into an Easton-type shopping center, except City Center will be in a real "town" center! Some people say that with Columbus' cold weather it won't work, but look at Easton! I'm sure that the Mills Corp. has something great in mind for City Center!
  3. where is the atlantic station area in atlanta. i saw shots with downtown/midtown atlanta in the background?
  4. It's good to hear that there are good times ahead for Mt. Carmel and the Franklinton area. It's wonderful to hear how they are working with the community to imporve not only the hospital but the area(s) around it. I hope they can see all the plans they have in mind come thru. Thumbs up to Mt. Carmel!!!
  5. thats a shame you have never heard of turin or torino in italian. it is a large italian city, but not to well known outside italy, except for fiat, tic tacs, psychics, and ferro roche chocolates. the ciyt is still not as well known as milan and rome. they are buiding a subway and/or light rail system in addition to there tram system. but its true that a city like columbus could hold the olympics, turin has about 900,000 people(i believe) about 200,000 or so more than columbus
  6. I received an email from ODOT and the City of Columbus stating that the ramp from I-270 SB (to Easton, I-670) to OH 161 EB (to New Albany, Newark) will (hopefully) open later today. It is the big flyover ramp, that is about 2/3 of a mile long.
  7. hell, i think its possible! why not columbus? centrally located, OSU, stadiums, athletic facilities. i think we have what it takes. i think all that columbus would need is more hotels(ritz, another hyatt or two, four seasons, another luxury marriott), much, much better public transport(light rail, passenger rail, subway system???, 24hour buses), advertising, consulates(mexico, england, germany, france, italy, japan, china, canada, spain, ireland) and anything else im missing!
  8. this so called "big, bad city to the south" allows these people to build there million dollar homes in dornoch, loch lomond, and elsewere. i may live in new albany, but that does not mean that i go around calling columbus this big evil monster that wants to destroy my way of life. personally, they should be glad columbus drug them kicking and screaming into the whole polaris deal! look at how successful that area is and how much is going on up there. personally, orange township needs to be dissolved and made a part of westerville, dublin, worthington or columbus. i dont think people in new albany bitch this much about columbus. maybe its "delaware county" thing or the whole hour long commute on i-71 and/or 23 to i-270.
  9. Even though I live in the antithesis of urbanism, I live in New Albany, I think Orange Township needs to cool it down a little bit. Polaris is like minutes away from where most people live there, and we dont need any more traffic on High Street(U.S. 23), Powell Road, Old State Road, etc... I'll go to downtown Columbus if I want that authentic urban feel and more than likely, the traffic will be much better and the environment more urban and city like
  10. I say go for it. If new signs will be aesthetically pleasing and better for people to be able get around, go for it the whole way. They looked very nice!
  11. okay. it must have been around the greensward road/pickett place/yantis drive area. a very nice area. i live near there. my parents remeber when new albany was just a tiny village before les took over. the east side of new albany is very different from the west side of new albany. we may actually move to upper arlington in the future or downtown, because the commute on 161/270 is a killer and living in upper arlington or downtown would be much better. and besides, upper arlington and downtown have more character.
  12. nice pictures of new albany. dont you just love new albany?! do you remember where you took most of those pics in new albany, i.e. street names or sub-divisions.? and very nice pictures of granville
  13. In case anyone wanted to know, they just opened the first of the new ramps at the I-270/OH 161 interchange. The ramp from I-270 southbound to OH 161 west(Worthington,Columbus) is now open. I drove on it for the first time yesterday and it seems pretty nice; it will be even better when they finish everything else. I heard that ODOT hopes to have the ramp from I-270 southbound to OH 161 east(New Albany) open. They both share the same exit and ramp. ODOT hasalso put up new green signs along I-270 from OH 3/Westerville Road to OH 161. Also, does anyone know if they will be putting up any VMS(variable message signs) along that portion of I-270?
  14. that news really iritates me. first federated gets rid of all the local stores(lazrus, burdines, richs, bon marche) then they buy out the may company stores, and then they decide not to keep the marshall fields name! whats next, getting rid of the lord&taylor name(who i use to work for)? they should keep the marshall fields name in the chicago area(at least at the state street store). i suppose bloomingdales will not exist within the next 10 years and they may buy out neimans, saks, barneys, nordstroms, etc...
  15. thanks for the info. i hope to be able to attend.
  16. as a resident of columbus(new albany to be exact) what can i do to make my opinions heard about the lack of talking on the issue of light rail/streetcars and improved bus service? is there anything at all i can do i.e. form a group of contact certain people? any help would be appreciated. thank you
  17. i agree with mrnyc! i really like the current franklin county courthouse! i think it is one of the best looking in the state and its also the talles county courthouse in the state also(take the cincy and cleveland!) the new government center will add to the skyline of downtown.
  18. im glad to see that the caps are still in. :-D i think it would be very nice to do that from spring street down to second street! they could have shops, restaurants, and parks on top of the caps. i wonder if they would really consider the boulevard idea? if they do, i wonder what they would name it? they should name it after a prominent columbus figure head or famous person
  19. thanks for the honest opinion of COTA! it just amazes me how much of a crappy system that we have. im sure that there is a cheaper way to build 3 or 4 light rail lines instead of one. we have wide streets that we can lay tracks on(broad, high, cleveland, livingston, morse, main). and lines on those streets would go out to suburbs like westerville, worthingon, reynoldsburg, bexley, whitehall, hilliard area. i know people in columbus would like light rail, but COTA needs to do a better job of letting people know the benefits of light rail. ohh how i miss the public transit in germany(frankfurt to be specific) :-D
  20. why doesnt COTA use High St., Broad St., Cleveland Ave., Main St., Livingston Ave., Morse Rd., etc..(all of which seem to be quite wide) as alternatives? im sure that columbus use to have trolleys running down the middle of them.
  21. now thats a waste of money in michigan. ohio is clamoring for commuter rail and michingan gets the money instead, now thats what i call government waste! i dont really have aproblem with ODOT, but they need to do more for ohio.
  22. speaking of light rail in columbus, has COTA or the city of columbus thought about going back and looking at where trolley lines use to run? im sure that they did run along high st., broad st., cleveland ave., etc... why not reuse these old lines? im sure there are factors involving construction, relocation, cost, etc... but why not study the feasabiltiy of it? i hope it would not cost as much money to do something like that. does anyone else agree? we should look at what san francisco did when they built a rail line on the embarcadero.
  23. im disappointed that the NRA pulled out. I know there are responsible and irresponsible people with guns out there, but most of them are responsible. maybe they could lift it for the convention and then reinstate it after the convention leaves. i support the NRA(im a big bush/cheney fan and a conservative evangelical christian) :-D and what they believe in. but i dont support those ignorant, foolish people who use them to shoot at police and innocent people!
  24. what could we do to open the ears of the people at the top of the heap here in columbus to consider opening a museum focused on columbus' history?
  25. does ORDC mean ohio rail development commission? i just wanted to be sure. also is there anything i or anyone else can do to get this project going. i am a full fledged conservative reupublican and i would fully support a tri-city rail system. i just dont see why more prominent republicans support rail. rail is much better than building more lanes on freeways, especailly on I-71. i just hope this does not fall through the cracks. any more information would be greatly appreciated.
