Cincinnati Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
^ Your point is correct that a distributor and retailer take a huge cut of the price of a can compared to a pint sold through a taproom, but it's more complicated than saying Rhinegeist nets $4-5 per taproom pint. At the stage each Cincinnati brewery is in its life cycle right now, all of them - from Madtree to Fibonacci - are plowing all or almost all of their revenue back into capital. A brewery start up is hugely capital intensive, and to expand requires large investments. I overheard conversations among a couple of Madtree's shareholders a year ago that they hadn't yet seen return on their investment, but that that was expected in the business.

Word around the campfire is that Blank Slate is taking delivery quite soon of additional equipment to increase production to fourth or fifth on that list. A canning line is also part of the expansion.

MLB: General News & Discussion
Rule 21 is the only factor at play here. It specifically calls for a permanent ban (subject to a reinstatement application) for anyone found to be in violation. The commissioner has very little latitude in reinstating a player so banned, but Rose signed an agreement in 1989 that allowed for his ban to be reconsidered if he "reconfigured his life." Rose himself admitted in his 2015 meeting with Manfred that he continues to bet on sports, including baseball. He has not demonstrated a propensity to avoid such behavior if he were allowed to associate with baseball again. Manfred's hands are tied. Say what you will about steroids or Draft Kings - they are false equivalencies. There was no rule in baseball that proscribed a permanent ban for steroid use, nor is there for a fan to bet on Draft Kings. There has been a ban on betting on baseball by baseball personnel for most of a century. Rose can't say he wasn't warned. He also can't seem to get out of his own way. While he cannot work for baseball at any level, he is free to be employed by a third party. His ban also only covers baseball employment - the door is open for Hall of Fame consideration as that is a independent party. It is up to the Hall to make that determination. I also find it silly that you wish death to an entire industry that employs thousands because one player made a series of fateful decisions, broke a clearly defined rule, and accepted his blame and punishment in writing. That's like saying we should shut down Amazon because someone in the Hebron warehouse got caught stealing and now Amazon won't hire him again.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
Your point is valid, but I'd argue that Performance approaches the "bicycle tyrant" definition, and in some places is the big game in town. Even in Cincinnati where Montgomery is king, the Performance store at Kenwood has more square footage than the bulk of independents. Also, Trek no longer makes many bikes in the states. Only their highest-end carbon fiber bikes are made in Waterloo, about 10,000 out of their annual production of ~1.5M. Everything else is made in Taiwan or China, which is where 99% (that's a real number) of bikes in the world are made. Second place for US bikes is Waterford (also Wisconsin) at 2,000 bikes a year.

^"Out of the way"? If you're coming by car, it's literally 30 seconds or less from any of NB or SB 71 or the Norwood lateral. Yes, it's not on a bus line, and it's certainly not walkable, but the vast majority of Madtree's customers don't care about that. Given the clientele most craft breweries are going for, I would actually wager that of all the breweries in greater Cincinnati, Madtree is currently the easiest to get to, with Rivertown and Eight Ball in the mix.

3200 sq ft? That's like what, 400 linear feet?

Montgomery: Development and News
I wonder if they won't be able to add direct access to WB Cross-County from the development.

Forest Park: Forest Fair Mall / Cincinnati Mills Redevelopment
I find this disconcerting. It almost looks like these were taken very early on a Sunday before the stores are open, not like it's been largely empty for years. The flooring looks brand new, and that Great Steak looks like you could flip on the lights and grills and serve some customers.

ODOT Policy Discussion
^ Yeah, this isn't the first time the one-plate rule has been floated. Somewhere around 2004 they were talking about it, and I remember this because I was leasing a car and asked that they add the front plate mount, as the car didn't have it. The service rep asked if I was sure, because in a few months I might not need it. 11 years later, here we are again/still. My understanding - and I don't know how true it is - is that it gives police a nice flat, vertical, and reflective surface to radar/laser off of in speed traps.

Cincinnati: Hyde Park: Development and News
Kind of on board with this. Some newer homes/buildings have been done with respect to nearby architecture: https://goo.gl/maps/gOC4U Some have been deliberately different but still high-quality: https://goo.gl/maps/udb26 And some have been...less successful: https://goo.gl/maps/5MQ7V

Cincinnati: Eastern Bypass
$1.1 billion for 68 miles of highway? That's a bargain! Let's do it. Maybe they forgot about bridge crossings over the Ohio, Licking and the Little Miami at Morrow? Or all the land acquisition and environmental studies? The Jeremiah Morrow bridge replacement over the Little Miami has cost almost $90 million, and I think we can assume a similar structure would be needed at Morrow.

Cincinnati: Oakley: Oakley Station
And meanwhile, Crossroads, the new Kroger, Target, Meijer, and Sam's have, what, 30 acres of parking among them? This part of Cincinnati is approaching (surpassed?) some of the outer suburbs for auto-centric development.

Ohio: Brewery & Alcohol Industry
^ So many missing as to be laughable. No Mt. Carmel, Blank Slate, Listermann, Moerlein, 50 West, Rivertown - and that's just a few of the Cincinnati-area breweries that should be on this list.

Cincinnati: Madisonville: Development and News
^Yup, there are a couple of factories at the bottom of Charlemar. Semi trucks travel down this otherwise quiet residential street. As part of the 2007 agreement for the redevelopment of the site, the developer was supposed to cul-de-sac Charlemar to redirect trucks down the wider streets built within the development. He has failed to do so for eight years now.

Most striking in these photos is not the streetcar construction, but the gay pride flags. That's a ton of progress for Cincinnati.

Newport, KY: Newport on the Levee: Development and News
To be fair, Newport has, for much of the last century, been an amusement area for Cincinnati. The name of the amusement (gambling, red-light district, now shopping/dining) may change, but the idea is the same.

Cincinnati: State of Downtown
This is timely. I can't see how Tire Discounters can keep up this growth locally. I just saw they're building one at Center of Cincinnati across from the LA Fitness. This in addition to one at Ridge/Highland (which I assume will close), Kenwood, Red Bank, Mariemont, and over 25 other stores in the region. Add in Bob Sumerel, Sam's, etc. and you're barely more than five minutes from a tire store anywhere you go. Can people really need that many tires? /get off my lawn

Cincinnati: Madisonville: Development and News
It's an economics thing. That corner of Madison and Red Bank is much more visible, flexible, and attractive in the long run to commercial uses than would a smaller lot in the heart of Madisonville. If you fill that corner with residential today, you have no chance down the line to fill them with commercial uses. Madisonville wants both jobs and places for employees to live.

Yeah, they're there - often two or three abreast and then slowing waaaaay down as they climb through to Taft...

Cincinnati Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
It's nothing that unusual, especially for a brand focused on sours. Blank Slate has done a Gose for like forever (it's great), and Rivertown has had a Berliner weisse for some time, too (also good). Listermann did a Kentucky Common last year I think, which I didn't have. They have basically chosen the least sour of sour beer styles as their core, which is a good move, I think. I suspect they will experiment around the edges.
