Cincinnati: CUF / Corryville: Development and News
BigDipper 80 replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionI wish we had done that during the urban renewal era in places like Kenyon-Barr as well. I have a feeling developers (and government agencies) find it easier to plop down generic cookie-cutter stuff that's all the variation of the same plan and can be quickly built rather than taking the time to manage and assess the individual needs of a bunch of individual properties. Too much that they won't have control over.

Nashville Gentrification Madness #3
You see that with a lot of “trendy” cities. I think a lot of it depends on how well-hidden the rough neighborhoods are from the “well-to-do” folks. Until recently Cleveland had a general malaise laying over most of the city that made its rough shape harder to ignore. But then you have places like New Orleans which are as crime-ridden and run-down as most of eastern Cleveland, but the Garden District and French Quarter helps whitewash it’s image.

Nashville Gentrification Madness #3
I stopped in Nashville on my way to New Orleans this week, and holy crap is it ugly. Some of those $400k townhomes are literally in the middle of trailer parks. I... don’t understand it at all.

$400 a month on groceries? $250 on eating out I could maybe see, but if this is just some single coding bro I doubt he buys that many groceries. I'm lucky to spend $100 a month on groceries, and I eat most of my meals at home.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
44106 also includes the lower half of Glenville, plus parts of Hough, Fairfax, and Coventry. It wouldn't surprise me if population drops in those other neighborhoods offset the growth in University Circle.

Columbus: Re-branding & Identity
I've been thinking about how at the statewide level, the "Find it Here" slogan doesn't really impart anything meaningful about what Ohio is. With a little tweak from "Find it Here" to "Make it Here", you'd have a slogan that captures the state's history of manufacturing and innovation but also how anyone can "make it" here and have a pretty good life for themselves. I think Columbus' big strength is that it has become the place for people to make a better life for themselves, and it's somewhat of a blank slate in that regard. It's hard to sell a blank slate - "hey, come to Columbus, we have nothing!" isn't going to get any marketing folks excited. But if you start sharing the stories of people who came to Columbus and made something of themselves or their city, maybe you can start inspiring a little pride of ownership in Columbus, so to speak. "This is my town, I can do with it what I want". If you try to force some narrative, people are going to see right through it. Hunting down a distinctive culture is futile with the exception of a handful of cities, honestly. No one moves to Charlotte because of how authentically North Carolinian it is; they moved there because Bank of America transferred them there and they wanted to make the most out of their city.

Springfield: Development and News
I didn't even have to click the article to know that this was going to be a Charlie Simms project. His townhouses around Dayton are... distinctive, to be kind. That said, I'm sure these will have no problem selling. Every other one of his new urban properties has sold out very quickly, and if a similar project in downtown Dayton can sell for nearly half a million per unit, these'll probably get snapped up too.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
BigDipper 80 replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionI'm with Robuu in that I feel like 3CDC is being overly picky in this regard. Is it ok for other "local chains" to open up in OTR, just like Thunderdome has done elsewhere? Would a one-off second location of Indy's famous Milktooth be acceptable? What about Hattie B's, which already has a number of locations around the south? I get that 3CDC wants OTR to be locally-focused and unique, but is it really unique if someone from Indianapolis visits and finds all of the same restaurants on Vine Street that they have back home along Mass Ave? Thunderdome is especially egregious in this regard because there's nothing particularly "Cincinnati-focused" about their brands, so there's really nothing that would make a visitor want to see the "original location" when they visit Cincinnati.

Cincinnati: Kroger
Rebranding yourself as "tech" is the only way to get people interested in working for you anymore. I know a ton of companies that are hurting for manufacturing engineers doing work that's way more high-tech and cutting edge than making an app that you can order groceries from or whatever, but since it's "manufacturing" and not "tech" no one wants to do it.

Dayton: Downtown: Arcade District
Demolition work finally begins inside Dayton Arcade After 27 years of plans that went nowhere and dashed hopes, some people won’t believe the Dayton Arcade will re-open until it actually happens. But even the biggest doubters can’t ignore mounting evidence that the arcade rehab project is the real deal. Social media lit up with excitement this week when photos were posted online of demolition work going on inside the arcade’s iconic rotunda. Sparks flew as crews sawed apart an old escalator, and whirring drills echoed in the massive space as scaffolding was put up. -- Next year at this time, the glass dome should be redone, the exterior should be restored, the first floor should be in-filled and the storefronts should be finished, developers say. Late spring of 2020 is when parts of the arcade are expected to re-open, they said. Dayton: Bicycling Developments and News
A bunch of exciting new bicycling developments are about to happen on the west side: Protected bike lanes, new trails coming to West Dayton DAYTON — West Dayton has few bike lanes but some major projects in the works will make it easier to ride a bicycle there. “West Dayton is definitely lacking in bike infrastructure,” said Joe Weinel, a city of Dayton senior engineer. “They need it because there’s not a lot over there.” Montgomery County will replace the Third Street bridge, with most of the construction expected to begin in early 2020. The more than $21 million project has been in development for years. Right now, the bridge’s sidewalks are eight feet wide, which can make it seem unsafe to ride across on a bicycle, officials said, especially when there are pedestrians. But the new bridge’s northern side will be 10 feet wide, and the southern side will be a 17-foot-wide multi-use trail, with two-way cycling lanes. Read more below: https://www.daytondailynews.com/news/local/protected-bike-lanes-new-trails-coming-west-dayton/0GM5Kir8OAgTnftLTW7OpM/?fbclid=IwAR3D10OtoOhHy1IctQ5OBGT9gorfmOSBkb_JbexToUhtedQv_5A19Oi6O-Q These are some very comprehensive projects and it really excites me that Dayton is so fully committed in making the entire city as bike-friendly as possible. I'm especially excited for the city's first protected bike lane to pass within a block of my house!

Cincinnati: General Business & Economic News
Nashville did a great job of transforming a lifestyle that was “uncool” for decades into something desirable. Portland and other photo-hipster cities arguably did the same thing when they stole PBR and Carhartt from the Rust Belt and made the blue collar aesthetic cool again. I question, though, what Cincinnati can do to make something like chili or goetta “cool” to a wider audience. Gourmet-i-fying chili won’t change the fact that people will continue to compare it to some... rather unsavory things. Yeah Nashville hot chicken is just a chicken leg slapped on a piece of Wonder Bread, but it’s still more Instagramable than wet brown meat sauce on top of spaghetti.

Is there any freeway in this state not named or sub-titled the Veterans Memorial Highway? Even the 70/75 Crossroads of America is officially named the ridiculous-sounding "Freedom Veterans Crossroads".

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
BigDipper 80 replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI have no idea what this ridiculous-looking Nashville-based show is actually about, but I LOL'd ten seconds in when they went to eat at one of Nashville's "new trendy restaurants"... and surprise, they ended up at Cincinnati-based chain restaurant Nada. Props for places like Bakersfield et al for managing to successfully pass themselves off as stand-alone "local, non-chain" brands, but it also kind of sucks a bit that these other cities think those restaurants unique to their city and not a Cincinnati creation.

^Yeah, I also considered listing a bunch of stuff around Shaker Square, but I figured I'd try to not hog every cool street in Cleveland! Euclid Heights Blvd in C.H. also has some great apartment rows.

Not a joke, I genuinely really like that street. Maybe it's me glamorizing "ruin porn" (which I try not to do), but it's so representative of how impressive a lot of E.C. used to be and how far it's fallen. Even in their overgrown, abandoned state, they're some really cool apartment buildings. There aren't many "apartment streets" like that around the state outside of a few areas on the east side of greater Cleveland. As for #1, most of the rest of West Boulevard is big single-family houses set back far from the street with huge, grand trees. I generally don't find Cleveland's "rich" or "upper middle class" houses quite as appealing as what one might find in East Walnut Hills or something, but the overall effect of West Boulevard really makes a great impression. https://www.google.com/maps/@41.4733172,-81.7554846,3a,75y,193.93h,85.19t/data=!3m5!1e1!3m3!1s0BceLF8ehTSFBT5tBRlSUQ!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo1.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3D0BceLF8ehTSFBT5tBRlSUQ%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D153.4709%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100

There aren't many states that have such a sheer variety of different streetscapes as we do... it makes me so mad that we're considered to be exclusively suburban Midwestern sprawl here!
