Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
It's just a poorly-written article. They're ending ticket restrictions on adjacent seats, not middle seats.

General: Complete Streets, Road Diets, and Traffic Calming
Dayton just removed a “pork chop” in front of the Art Institute. I had complained at various meetings about this intersection being dangerous so I like to think it was my activism that got it removed 😆.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Someone needs to figure out how to channel the north-south rivalry energy into encouraging the southern cities to be loudly supportive of Amtrak. Springfield and Middletown should be livid that podunk Bryan has better train service than they do!

Bojangles planning big expansion into Columbus COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Bojangles, a fast food chain known for its Southern-style chicken and biscuits is planning 15 new restaurants in the Columbus market. The expansion into Columbus is part of a new deal with franchise owner Jeff Rigsby to open 45 new locations over the next seven years. https://www.nbc4i.com/news/local-news/bojangles-bringing-15-new-restaurants-to-columbus-area/ & https://www.columbusunderground.com/bojangles-planning-15-locations-in-columbus-sp1 & https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2021/03/04/heres-the-next-fast-food-brand-planning-a-columbu.html

Detroit: Developments and News
Lafayette Park is great. I was there in December and the public spaces were being actively used by children, and it's one of the few pockets that's truly mixed-race and mixed-income in the entire city. Sure there's no ground level retail and a lot of apartments face onto parking lots, but it's an easy walk over to the Eastern Market. I think it works fine, all things considered.

Yeah, out of one side of his mouth he says "we have to cut, cut cut" and out of the other side of his mouth he says "it's the trains that will cause us to underfund schools and Medicaid, not all these other tax cuts". It's only a no-sum game when you remove taxation as an option altogether.

Where were these anti-eminent domain people in the 50s? Oh yeah, those were mostly Black businesses and homes taken for freeways.

Have we heard anything more from state lawmakers on all of this? I'd like to get a temperature check of how our leaders are feeling about these proposals.

Famous Ohioans
Not strictly a "famous Ohioan", but Tiffany Haddish expressed some interest in buying property in West Dayton. James Franco's grandma owned an art gallery in Cleveland before she passed. And doesn't Bill Murray's son coach(ed) Xavier's basketball team?

If even some of this got implemented, I'd be elated. A Cincy-Columbus route via Dayton would be a boon and could feasibly make Dayton and Springfield more attractive bedroom communities for folks getting priced out of the city centers in the C's.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
I never really bought into this argument. The I-77 corridor is pretty undeveloped despite not being in the national park. Clevelanders love to assert that the metros would be "joined if not for the park", but there's plenty of room in Richfield and Bath that could be used to join the cities, since all the sprawl along 271 and 8 apparently isn't enough according to Census Bureau standards.

Cleveland: Glenville: Development and News
I was driving down Wade Park the other day to get to EC and since I haven't really been following Cleveland developments closely, I was absolutely shocked to see all those Knez homes squeezed in over there. It's still a little weird seeing so much infill popping up into one of the most awkward and forgotten corners of the city, but I'm happy to see that someone is trying to do something with the area.

Ohio Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORA / Open Container)
I think Canton does as well, and of course Dayton finally turned Fifth Street and half of downtown around the Levitt Pavilion this past summer and it was a huge success. They started closing down Fifth on the weekends which gave people a lot more space to social distance, and I think it really helped businesses in the Oregon District weather some of the pandemic a bit better.

“Iconic”... LOL it’s about as iconic as the cable stayed bridge over the Wolf Creek in West Dayton, and at least that one has crazy LED light shows.
