  1. ^ we can only hope. Should be noted however, that might take awhile. Developer owns several more acres along Vine between Calhoun & McMillan which extends all the way past Scioto St. They would likely develop that before buying more property. Also, the shell would've pretty expensive as its one of the only gas stations in uptown.
  2. She was definitely very popular. But her position was less strong than the one shell be running for now.
  3. Anyone seen a completed rendering?
  4. I will absolutely agree that the westside is in major decline due to a number of factors (crappy housing stock, bizarre arterials, crappy business districts, disconnection from wealth on the east side, etc.). Westwood will be declining for several years to come. Mt Airy is also ina state of decline. East price hill seems to be leveling off after years of decline and might actually see some minimal progress in the next few years, but overall the western neighborhoods are in a lot of trouble. CUF and Corryville are seeing crime drop quite dramatically. Walnut Hills had dropped for several years but recently had a small bump up, avondale has seen crime drop dramatically, and evanston is seeing crime decrease. It seems that the plan of the Port and the City is to invest heavily in these areas as they are in better positions for growth and have factors that help them that much of the westside doesn't have. You're also seeing huge increases of crime in Colerain township, likely crime leaving the City. Generally, across the whole county, everything west of 75, with the exception of Northside and college hill, is going to be getting worse before it gets better.
  5. No- you know your part of the City more intimately. There's no one lifestyle or experience that gives you the best, most authentic knowledge on ALL lifestyles and experiences. Growing up poor is difficult and tragic, but growing up poor in Cincinnati is hardly any different than growing up poor in Cleveland, St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, etc. In fact, it might be better than in some of those communities and surely, it might be worse than in a couple others. There's being poor in Bond Hill, but then there's being poor in Covington and being poor in South Fairmount or Fay Apartments. All of THOSE are different even within the same area. Everything is different everywhere always, and yet in many places it's also pretty similar (genius, i know). You had crappy experiences in Cincinnati and so your view of Cincinnati is that it leans towards those crappy experiences. That is how the human mind works, feelings are tied to a location and the experiences that happened in that location. Cincinnati is not even in the top 25 cities in america for crime. Crime is dropping dramatically, with a 16% drop in violent crime in the last two years and a 10% drop in property crime in the last two years. To say we're anything like a third world country is over the top. Are there pockets of people who live a criminal lifestyle? absolutely. But you also complain we have too many police or something to that effect. I do agree that the spike in crime between 2003 and 2007 did impact some peoples perceptions of the streetcar. But many of people are against it for its dollar amount, because it's rail, because it's downtown and downtown gets all the attention, because its not in my backyard (reverse NIMBYism), etc.
  6. I think 2009.
  7. I agree that the office building should have had a fourth floor. Looks so short and bizarre. Other comments: It looks better than the banks I think....glad there's more red brick, but wish there was less EIFS. As a side note, City Council had put an IDC over Pleasant Ridge (my former neighborhood) business district when there were rumors that Anchor properties wanted to tear down half the business district for a super Walgreens last summer. Because of that IDC still being in place, when the hideous Burger King came to the city for approval for a teardown and rebuild the city was able to push for solid brick cladding and almost no EIFS (only on back of building). Wish they could have done that here! Also, I'm really worried about the garages. They are so hideous. They seem to be cladding the very bottoms of them in a dark red brick, but I can't tell if they plan to continue or just do the pedestrian level in brick. Any ideas? I'd hate for that to stay concrete.
  8. Oh god not this again. CityBlights, have you lived in any other major cities with a sizable African American majority? We are pretty standard. Yes there is poverty. Yes there is crime. Are we all going to die? No. Your homicide/cop show comment is completely over the top and almost laughable. Sherman, I hope things get better and your slumlord neighbor gets his act together. I'm sorry some other posters think you're exaggerating and that you should just get over it.
  9. Agreed. Good reason for the city to reject that term from that bid. First off, that was one companies proposal. And the City would be adding event parking anyway. I've been told that right before this proposal the city looked at adding $5 event parking. Other options: Take a bus. Carpool. Park in OTR or NKY & walk.
  10. Parking is privatized in Indy right now, it's $1.50 downtown and $1 in the neighborhoods. Sounds crazy!!!! Also, the meter can text your cell phone 5 minutes before your time runs out. Horrible!!! iPhone apps that point out open meters!? It can't be! http://www.parkindy.net/index.html http://www.streetline.com/find-parking/parker-mobile/
  11. Well the thefts/vandalism started 6 months ago and are showing no sign of stopping.
  12. ^ I'm pretty sure that is the intent. Also, I don't care if someone's a tenant or not, if things aren't right, the place is a mess, etc. I'd call property maintenance, code enforcement, litter control, etc to visit the place and cite the landlord if there's anything wrong. That's why we have rules. then the landlord is put under pressure to clean up his property and evict unruly tenants.

    Well, welcome back!
  14. PG is exactly what I thought he'd be. A huge waste of a seat. But he'll be the top vote getter next year. What has he accomplished? He got one towing company banned from the city. That's it.
  15. I genuinely don't understand this post.
  16. What is the address on the house. I have friends who can crack down on violations by the tenant or landlord. It sounds like the house could almost qualify for the chronic nuisance ordinance.
  17. very cool. Let's keep those jobs coming, and hopefully also having more of them grow in the city cores than just in the exurbs. looking forward to the next update.
  18. Watching it online. Sign is on Gilbert against greyhound and behind garage. It looks as though the only people who will really see it are Mt Adams residents, not OTR or Pendleton. It's possible people on upper floors in Pendleton will see the top 10-15 feet of the sign over the rest of the casino building, but that's about it. Also, looks like its going to pass.
  19. 17yo killed 16yo in Walnut Hills this weekend at around 1am. Shooter was arrested. Very crazy/sad.
  20. He is going to be pretty similar to PG. he is close with Smitherman, "supports streetcars but has major concerns with the lack of transparency in the current plan", opposed to all new taxes, etc.
  21. Council already appropriated an extra $15 million from blue ash for Duke utilities. I believe the city and duke are in negotiations on an operating agreement. Once they is hammered out (duke is asking for the moon) they will allow their utilities to be moved with the cities funds. But they won't even give the city a schedule or plan until an operating agreement is signed, Even though it wkr be operating for over 2 years.
  22. bids aren't due back until January, then someone will win. Also, there is no option to build over most of duke's infrastructure like that. $15 million will be spent to move things.
  23. Considering Dunnhumby signed a deal with the state saying they would hit 1000 employees by 2018, and now have said, holy crap we're gonna hit 1400 by 2014, yes, I don't think they realized how fast they were expanding. I'm worried Dunnhumby is a house of cards... A late 20-something can start at about $70,000 with 5 weeks vacation. why am I working in non-profits?!?
  24. Considering how much QCS bashing we all do, Emporis rated all skyscrapers built in 2011 around the World and ranked the Great American tower #4 globally and #2 in America behind Frank Gehry's 8 Spruce St NYC high rise. http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2012/12/05/great-american-tower-4th-best.html?ana=handmark
  25. Not sure if I agree with much of this. In cities like new york, Chicago, etc. people live in major areas that have events, concerts, etc. That's not a reason not to build apartments. If that was the case there would be no major residential developments in most of mid-town Manhattan. I sort of agree on the sunlight thing, but my opinion seems to be, well, that's the price of progress. Again, regarding people seeing into your apartment, something tells me this can be solved, as nearly all major US cities have high rises near major public squares. When you build in an urban setting there are design elements to make all of this ok.
