Cincinnati: Downtown: Convention Center / Hotel
I could see that Vine Street project coming to life as a new location for the CVS. Honestly that's something realistic that would happen in this town.

Makes you wonder how that affected the condom industry.

As the largest grocer in the world, I kind of feel like Kroger has the responsibility to make sure that people have access to healthy affordable food, and I think that they're are failing at that tremendously. We're well beyond an era where most people are able to produce their own food. And we're also well beyond the era where the average person has bargaining ability, or that there are many that could challenge Kroger, especially here. Unfortunately most of us are at the mercy of our local grocers, and Kroger's lack of urban stores is really pathetic.

Yves Behar replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionSpecifically for the Towne properties units, the cornices are not actually that bad. The thing that makes the whole thing bad is the copy/paste of one unit to the next. It ends up feeling either like a strip mall, or like a single massive building that's strangely been broken up into identical parts. I agree, tho I have seen that done before in the past with similar row houses. Still, I would love to see someone give a cornice a more unique and modern twist. We have the ability to solar power LEDs, how about some of those in there? Also the general form factor could be extrapolated and perhaps evolved into some new form of aesthetic unique to Cincinnati. Anyway I'm a dreamer, perhaps I'll sketch some of my cornice ideas someday.

Yves Behar replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionI mean it doesn't seem that difficult to make a building like that more interesting. Most of the architecture in OTR is generally rectangular and with like one wall facing the street. Can't we get some interesting lentils and sills? Maybe a transom with some stained glass?? I'm not even saying replicate they styles of the past, just recognize that these simple elements can add a significant amount to a building. I'm really hoping to see someone make a building with that sort of honesty to the materials, but with a modern take on the stylistic elements. Also don't even get me started on Cornices. I feel like they are the most unique and defining part of the Italianate buildings we have, and the ones being built today have almost no character.

Yves Behar replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionIt really is mind boggling just how much boring and ill-conceived architecture gets built around here. Just wondering if these people even went to college because most of these types of project look like they could have been picked out of a catalog. Even renderings for large budget projects these days seem like some google sketch-up crap made in an afternoon. The whole field of architecture is certainly in one of its darkest times in history.

I disagree, I think vertical would look like a pole barn, horizontal is more traditional.

Yves Behar replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionThat bar is awful. Nothing like having to hear their bulls*@t music at a literally INSANE volume from halfway across the square. Not even sure how people can go in there.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
Having all restaurants and bars at the Banks doesn't seem the be economically ideal though. The evidence supports it with how many of these places have closed down already. The Banks seems to be one of those places where you can go at a certain time and it's packed, and then another time it's a ghost town. The problem I see is that the economy of The Banks is stagnant early in the day and on days when there aren't many events there. I just think there needs to be more things do to or a greater variety of stores that would attract people there for reasons beyond just entertainment. The people coming to say, The Apple Store, or J Crew or some trendy stores like that, would also probably eat at the restaurants. It's also not a very attractive place to live for a lot of people, and I rarely hear it brought up as an option for people who want to move here. It's an urban neighborhood, but also somewhat isolated from so many amenities that it would difficult to live there without a car. The nearest Kroger is all the way up in OTR, and although it's close to downtown, the highway is a pretty big divider between the CBD and riverfront.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
I know that it's next to the ballpark and all that but I just wish it were a little more diverse than just restaurants and bars. That's pretty much why I feel like it won't ever be more than a tourist attraction that people happen to live at. It would also be cool if it were a retail area with smaller high end stores, if we're going with the whole urban mall kind of style. The buildings looking like boring shit that's already rusting is a big reason that people don't want to hang out there as well.

Yves Behar replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionUnless things have changed since I went to UC, Sigma Sigma Commons was always one of the most occupied ares, especially when it was warm in the summer evenings. Lots of soccer and cricket, people skateboarding, chilling, playing frisbee and the like.

Yves Behar replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionThat part of McMicken and Central is beautiful, and the buildings too. There should be a small park on Central behind those buildings, and bring back the footbridge.

Yves Behar replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionThose are very cool steps and I personally would love to see them rebuilt. You are very correct about the danger in crossing at McMillan. I used to lie on Clemmer St. very near the park and went there a lot. Every time I crossed that street is was a mad dash hoping not to be hit by a car flying around one of the two blind corners there. Also, near the top of those stairs are remnants of the old incline supports. Along with that is the grade of the old driveway that led to an estate that was on the top of the hill. Very cool stuff that should be highlighted.
