  1. Not sure if this is the right section to post this, but the Broadway Avenue Corridor just won a Federal Transit Administration grant to promote transit oriented development https://www.transit.dot.gov/funding/grants/grant-programs/fiscal-year-2022-transit-oriented-development-tod-planning-projects
  2. New report notes that Cleveland is a leader in converting office space to apartments: https://www.rentcafe.com/blog/rental-market/market-snapshots/adaptive-reuse-apartments/
  3. Are there other tenants in the building? How hard will it be to clear out for an apartment conversion?
  4. I know the decision making about office space comes down to dollars and cents, but to attract employee talent it seems like the amenities of downtown are far superior than moving to this.
  5. I would like to see political pressure on Ohio's congressional delegation to move the Coast Guard station. That piece of land is more suited to develop (location-wise, being on the edge of downtown and across from the Rock Hall), than other parts of the waterfront, including Burke.
  6. 1. It's great to see another big investment in the city by the Clinic. 2. The siting of the building near the sidewalks is a huge improvement over the suburban style of buildings like the Health Education Campus. 3. I still wish the Clinic allowed for more lively street-level uses of their buildings, like restaurants and retail. There's really no reason to walk the sidewalks around any Clinic building. 4. On the aesthetics of this building, I'm not a fan of the "blanched" look, like all color was drained from the facade. I thought Cesar Pelli did so many great buildings for the Clinic that combined modernism with a mix of colors and materials.
  7. These are the types of buildings that give Cleveland a unique post-industrial character. I hope the city doesn't simply take GE at its word about contamination, but instead does an independent analysis of whether the structures can be saved. These buildings would be beautiful to convert to apartments or live/work space. There have been too many buildings like this torn down for empty lots that sit idle for years.
  8. Apparently there was a competition to design the world's most basic-looking building and Silverhills won!
  9. The process for deciding what to do with the Justice Center started in 2015. This report should've been started then. Instead we've moved forward seven years without knowing how suitable one of the leading sites is. My personal opinion before this report was that this was the best site based purely on land-use considerations. I have no expertise in interpreting the severity of this information, but it seems to put a major damper on subjecting inmates and workers to these potential hazards.
  10. So is there a technical/physical reason why the proposed cap is so short? Or is it just money? If the budget got boosted a couple mil could they do the longer cap posted above?
  11. So did they pour concrete up to an inch or two away from the trunk of the tree? Seems like it could use some more room for water, no? And if the tree does grow won't it be pushing up the sidewalk?
  12. The project is still an asset to the city, but one of the big urbanist benefits was supposed to be eating up the surface parking lots in the middle of the city. The current site plan shows it still leaves a lot of asphalt. Hopefully the hypothetical second tower comes to fruition.
  13. That first five floors of parking garage is quite imposing.
  14. Glad to see this filled in, but it is going to be so confusing having two City Club Buildings right next to each other.
  15. I think converting the Med Mart into Convention Center space is great, a no-brainer. But since it’s closer to the heart of downtown more people will be entering the Center through it than the official front entrance on Lakeside, so I hope they plan for the circulation of people going in there.
  16. Reasons why this is bad: 1. This process has already gone on much longer than necessary. 2. The existing facility is unsafe for inmates. 3. The existing jail is a poor use of downtown land. (A downtown courthouse is a different story).
  17. Do you have a link to the photos and maps the report cites to?
  18. I hope Mr. Adjaye is a fan of regional scenic railways and incorporates that into his plan.
  19. I don't think @Foraker was asserting that a new jail wasn't necessary, I think he was saying that opponents will make that claim, even if its unfounded.
  20. Ya don’t want one of these happening: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citicorp_Center_engineering_crisis
  21. Here's a potentially interesting perspective if Geowizical has the time. It was uploaded to Google Maps by a Paul Duda.
  22. I like how those are built up to the street.
  23. On Monday NPR's economics podcast The Indicator released a short episode on inland ports focusing on Cleveland. It highlighted a ship that came in from Shanghai and the regular service in place from Antwerp. They note the distance from Europe to Cleveland is virtually the same as going to the larger port of Baltimore. It's worth a listen. https://www.npr.org/2022/01/10/1071932095/inland-port-priority
  24. Tall apartment buildings have water and sewer.
  25. I do hope this space gets put to good use, and I appreciate your optimistic take on it. However, you identify a problem of large spaces having too much depth and not enough frontage. This is the opposite of what SW is proposing. This space doesn't have enough room for back of house operations like a kitchen or stock room.
