  1. We live in a capitalist world (thank God!) and if someone can afford a house, tear it down, and put up a brand new home, all the power to them. I think it is ridiculous to have other people telling me what I should do with my own home. Sorry, I paid/paying for the thing and it should be the way I want it.
  2. As a former union worker, being in a union is like throwing away money every month to be apart of nothing. I am glad that I left that job. The faster unions go away, the better off everyone will be. I will not make a comment about sprawl.
  3. I don't know, what is wrong with Dayton?
  4. And what is wrong with Dubuque, IA?
  5. Remind you all, these additional lanes are not general purpose lanes and will consist of 2 HOV and 2 Truck-Only lanes. So they are adding capacity using the HOV lanes and removing the trucks from the main lanes. While this will result in 23 lanes just north of I-285, it will not be 23 lanes for very long. At the I-285 interchange there is a bunch of lanes because many are merging lanes. North of that, the highway has a total of 10 lanes + 4 new HOV/truck lanes. This will also include HOV extension up I-575 and a little further up I-75. HOV lanes construction on I-85 has just started its extension up to highway 316. Atlanta will be adding HOV lanes for the most part throughout the Metro, and very little mainline expansion. There is also a new rail loop around the city/inner suburbs that sounds pretty sweet.

I believe there was a book originally written about this. I discovered it during my freshman year in high school (fall 2001). The cover was very odd, a 110 story tower, gray in color, with flames coming out of the windows. I didn't think of anything at that time, but looking back, it was very odd how that image came to life the next week.
  7. If we see some of the growth that Atlanta has seen the last 15 years ( minus some of the sprawl ), we would see more 35+ story skyscrapers. What retricts us from that kind of growth, I don't know.
  8. Ok, so the city of Cincinnati has its own garbage trucks? I never have looked for one while I live down here. I know in the burbs that its mainly Rumpke, Waste Management or BFI. Do all these companies then just drive over to Colerain and dump?
  9. I agree that the Cincinnati Metro is terrible with recycling. Now I know Rumpke is the big garbage collector, but does the city run its own trash service, or do private companies do it all? I think it would be a good idea to expand the landfill. Is there another landfill in the metro, I remember seeing one off of I-71 in Kentucky.
  10. I was speaking north of Norwood Lateral where there is that double barrier. Most of I-71 doesn't have 2 10 foot shoulders does it? I thought most inside shoulders were in that 6 foot range. I think it would be better to have bigger inside shoulders as it seems people in Cincinnati with the sh!ty cars drive in the left most lane and break down in it, eliminating a lane all together. Also, it is best to keep the lanes at 12 feet, because the Brent Spence is 11 and those are too small, so I'd rather have the extra foot than just 6 inches.
  11. Most times HOV/HOT lanes are used by carpools/vanpools, buses, motorcycles, electric cars, natural gas cars and sometimes hybrids.
  12. HOV lanes in Ohio?! You've got to be kidding me, we would never do something that smart. With I-75, they decided they wouldn't add them because they wouldn't be used, well make them HOT lanes and I bet they would be used and use that toll money to pay for a rebuild of the Paddock Road bridge. If I-71 is widened, I would bet they use the inside barrier for the extra lanes, as I suspect they will do with the northern beltway between Winton and 42 as it has the same type of barrier.
  13. The sprawl issue is "not" stupid. It is poor planning and should be discussed. I don't know why I have to keep reminding people that this board is called, "Urban Ohio". You don't have to agree with the majority of the members on this board but it is not "stupid" to debate sprawl. This isn't so much about dense development as it is about keeping the land rural. While most of us on here love dense urban environments, in this case we believe that the land shouldn't be used to create a faux Indian Hill. I believe I didn't explain myself enough, I didn't want to project that urban sprawl issues are stupid. What I wanted to say was that urban sprawl will not stop completely. It will continue, but it can be limited so certain pieces of land are saved. As with this development, they are saving land by taking a huge piece, and slowly developing it. It is nice to keep land rural, that is why 95% of our country is undeveloped.
  14. I agree, excellent game! Can't beat 5th row!
  15. grasscat: I should have made my point more clear. I agree with zoning and it is a good thing. However, I don't understand what's the big problem with this development. Some people think its not dense enough, then others think its too dense. I support this development as it has been planned well and is not the stereotypical suburban development.
  16. Well, there is the issue of zoning.... Well yes there is, however I don't see how this development will destroy the area. It seems well planned and not like the typical developments that rip out everything, pave streets, build the same house 1000 times, then plants trees that they could've left in the first place. Yes the plans do call for it to be spread out, but what is wrong with that? I am all for living in an urban environment, but to expect everyone too is stupid. Sprawl is happening now and will happen as long as there is growth. I believe in smart growth and mass transit, but I am a big libertarian, so I believe that the suburbs provide good housing at an affordable price. Just look at Portland, OR, beautiful city, however they placed boundries on where the city ends and everything itside that boundry has gone up in price so fast and so high that low, low middle-class and middle-class residents can't afford it. The Cincinnati region will sprawl, but it will slow because we're not growing that fast and a rebirth has happened in the city and I believe that rebirth will spread out from the city.
  17. If the developers bought the land, they should be able to build on it. Some people like density, others don't, so why force people to live in a dense environment? I say if you like the area and can afford the housing, why not live there? The sprawl issue is stupid, its not killing our country and people need to stop getting all worked up about it.
  18. With how high the taxes are in West Chester, I expect that we could build one soon.
  19. I have been wondering why more floors were coming down lately. The funny thing is, this year there was a housing shortage and students within 50 miles were put on a waiting list until all those outside the radius had housing.
  20. Why don't people just take RR west to the next exit? The left hand exit needs to be taken out, it is "Broken" mayor. It is both dangerous and restrictive in the flow of traffic.

Born in Edina, MN. Lived on the south side of Minneapolis for 4 years. Moved to Dubuque, IA and lived there for 12 years. Moved to West Chester, OH and lived there 2 years. Now live in the University Heights neighborhood of Cincinnati, OH.
  22. The website has an updated alternative B-1. Looks like they eliminated the new exit in Lockland.
  23. When oil runs out ( 50-100 years? ), people will still have cars, they will just run on a different fuel. Your debate about running out of space is stupid. 95% of the county is undeveloped, so there is plenty of farmland available, and the main reason why prices have increased on certain foodstuffs is because of subsidies that promote farmers to not plant. I have heard the argument time after time that this is the only way farmers can make money, well I guess they either figure out how to make money and stop farming. This is just like the real, business world, profitable companies make it, others no longer function. Please explain the subsidizing of the suburbs to me.
  24. I think their hearts are in the right place, but the project isn't. City West is too close to this project and the West End would do better without it. Another question, why do the plans call for it to look like a Wal-Mart?
  25. I have been working out at the new rec and I can tell you it is much better than the basement of the Shoe.
