I like this list, but I'm curious what makes these better places to live, except Istanbul and Barcelona which are more readily understandable. I think Prague is the most underrated city in the world for livability.

Five is too difficult. But here goes. Amuricah 1. Portland 2. Asheville 3. Iowa City 4. Chicago 5. Rural New England World 1. Prague 2. Copenhagen 3. Tallinn 4. Buenos Aires 5. Milan Honorable mention: Cape Town, the most beautiful setting I've ever been immersed in, I just can't put it up there bc it just is what it is... To be fair, I excluded places I have lived, which of course I'm also quite partial to.. OKC, Rotterdam, and Moscow. Cleveland has been treating me quite nicely, too.
  3. Welcome. I'm also just newly settled into Lakewood, but I'm curious why you have to be near the airport. Cleveland is a pretty easy city to get across in my limited experience so far, and there are a lot of great areas on both sides of town, but calling Shaker or Cleveland Heights 20 min from airport is a stretch. As for safety, Kamm's Corner is the safest area in Cleveland proper's westside. Lakewood, Rocky River, and Westlake are probably the safest areas in that range of the airport.
  4. There are several cities, even in the U.S., that require surface paving in parking lots or driveways to be cobblestone. That's actually standard almost everywhere in Europe.
  5. In order for this to be a valid analogy, whatever you covered your lawn's bald patch with must also specialize in kill the rest of the grass and creating more bald spots where previously there was good, thick lawn. Even if it was tough to keep mowing, started to look a little rough without any rain or watering, etc etc...
  6. This is one of the most beautiful pics I've seen of Cleveland's skyline, you didn't happen to take any of the Flats from this angle that could be stitched in?
  7. Not trying to be argumentative, but "feeling" and financial and design necessities are two different things. I like most here think design standards should be raised, but at the same time, how can I really dictate someones financial status on a project? Those parking lots don't come free.
  8. I feel that a high-tech project should be above the suburban office park format.

Mac and cheese requires outside ingredients (milk, butter) to be edible. OTH Raman is self contained with that terrible packet of sodium. ** helpful hint: use 1/3 of the packet and add TBS of peanut butter. Or better yet, ditch the flavor packet entirely and add some curry. Your kidneys will thank you. Oh man, I love that packet of sodium. I used to make soup broth with bullion cubes, but lately I just fish the flavor pack out of ramen noodles and throw the noodles away, and use that for me broth. But if I could find an organic/healthy alternative at Whole Foods or TJ's I'd do that instead... though I'm quite sure my kidneys got the message when I turned 21. So why is the dateline of the Weeden story Berea? Surely that is not where Weeden bought a house? lol.
  10. Thanks to my parents divorce and my father deciding to take the first job he could find to get out of Ohio I spent a lot of time on the other side of the forest in Russellville. Wish I had visited Eureka Springs at an age I would have better appreciated it more. It was just a stop on our way to parts beyond. Just thinking about that billion dollar museum (costs+collections+endowment) sitting in the middle of nowhere just makes me want to vomit. Lakeside, the town I recommended is part of the greater Sandusky vacationland area, so it didn't go entirely unmentioned :) Haha, Bentonville isn't the middle of nowhere, although it would have been cool had they somehow worked the museum into a more urban setting in NWA - but then they probably couldn't have preserved the natural vibe, unless they went with the backside of the UArk campus in Fayetteville. That said, there are 500,000 people living in NWA, Tulsa is just an hour away with 1 million, and Springfield is another hour away with another 500,000. I also can't help but mention the number of "folks" (I believe that is the human sub-set) vacationing at Branson, Buena Vista, Eureka Springs, Grand Lake, and all over the Ozarks in general. To me, the Ozarks aren't at all remote - certainly no more remote than the Adirondacks or Blue Ridge mtns. There are many places east of the Mississippi that are a lot more remote than the Ozarks, but perhaps I'm biased growing up in there. Obviously when Tulsa is the regional "big city" you're not talking about one of the nation's big urban conglomerations, but it beats most other areas in the south. Russellville - ew, no offense lol.. but have you seen some of the really cool new development in Conway? I'm surprised to say Conway is becoming a decent college town. :-o
  11. I actually grew up nearby Eureka Springs, in the town of Grove (on Grand Lake) before my parents moved to OKC. Eureka used to be a lot more happenin' than now, but with the emergence of walkable areas in Tulsa and Little Rock (to a much lesser extent lol), I feel like less people are "daycationing" there. Ah.. I miss that area so much. I need to go back, especially to see the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art that was just finished in Bentonville. We used to go to all of the OSU-Arky games back when that was a rivalry, but now there is just virtually no reason to go into Arkansas. Which is a shame because I've never had a bad time in NWA. :D So Pomeroy is worth checking out? Funny, I would have suggested Sandusky, and I know so little about Ohio, being new. Sandusky has the vacationing going on, family attractions, proximity to larger metros, scenic surroundings - all it lacks is the critical mass of working artists.

Hope he likes ramen noodles in 2012.
  13. I'd argue nobody has any right to be jealous considering how easy it is to do streetcar without federal assistance. Just build a system of your own - streetcar systems are really taking off across America. Bear in mind that streetcar is nowhere near as expensive as LRT or any other fixed guideway mode.
  14. Well, for the most part somewhat, but I understand they do periodic checks that are pretty unpredictable, and the fines are steep. Sort of the same as riding the HealthLine in Cleveland, or at least as far as I can tell from my limited experiences with both transit systems. I also know in OKC they're leaning toward making the streetcar fare-free, or at the most a minimal fee just to keep vagrants off and pay for new technology (like gps iPhone apps, LED hologram wayfinding signage, etc). The operating costs of streetcar and other fixed guideway modes are very low compared to buses, as you guys most likely know already. You could easily fund operating costs through sponsorships and advertising. Sorry for bumping an oooold thread. I just loved these pics.
  15. Thanks all. Expect to see another photo album from me next month. :)

Actually, I will be an OSU alum sometime early January, as soon as my CSU credits from this sem transfer over and get processed. But my dad and granddad are also OSU alums so I've followed the Pokes a long time. As for Cooper, as long as he's in the mix, he'll rise as an option. Weeden already has a lot of familiarity with him, and he is most accurate with receivers whose movements he's familiar with. Blackmon and Weeden read eachother's thoughts, so he just became his favorite target upfield. Weeden under pressure is a funny thing, because the worst time he ever screwed up was the most critical play of the season, when he threw that infamous pick in 2OT at Iowa State on a bizarre Friday night, and the OSU world came crashing down after that week. I think how bad OSU people felt that week put an exclamation mark on that one pick thrown by Weeden. That said, he's an amazingly accurate qb. I'd say his one negative is that he does become somewhat statuesque on that pitcher's mound of his. Not a very mobile qb, the entire Boone went nuts when he darted for 10 yards once and it was almost hysterical. He might be the greatest air raid qb there ever was, former Yankee pitcher and all, but a dual-threat qb he is not. He also always had very talented OLs that prevented defenses from even breathing on him, most games. I don't doubt there will be some adjustment for him going into the NFL, where some Saints players and who knows whom else are getting paid bonuses to knock his block off, but he's also one of the most mature athletes I've ever seen. No doubt his maturity helped OSU win a Big 12 championship. I also don't doubt he's more mature than any other prima donna NFL players (just an outside observation), and that maturity will help him acclimate when he's tested, as well as give him a strategic advantage. It was a very similar deal to Andrew Luck at Stanford, where both guys are basically like coaches out on the field, except that OSU actually has good coaches as well lol. And a kicker.
  17. Thanks all. And in case anyone is curious what comments these pics got elsewhere, here's the same thread on the OKC board: http://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=31033

Yeah, Weeden is incredible. I'll always remember his break-out game when it became apparent he needed to move up from #3 on the depth chart. This dork Alex Cate, coming in for the injured Zac Robinson (who broke Coach Gundy's school records, and then whose records Weeden broke), didn't complete a single pass in the first half of the OSU/Colorado game back in 2008, Weeden came in and completed his first past and BPS went nuts. Weeden led a come-back for the ages as the third-stringer. I'm really not sure what you guys think you're getting in Gordon. However I wouldn't discount Josh Cooper, who I understand had been making a great impression during spring camp. I'd be curious what happens of that since I haven't seen any updates since June on my OSU board. Keep in mind with Coop you have Weeden's past #2 favorite target, and a guy who would've been the Big 12 leading WR if it weren't for a very talented two-time Biletnikoff who likes a drink every now and then. Obviously I have my own heightened self interest in following the Browns this season when I've always ignored NFL due to the superiority of the college game IMO, but I think Cleveland has a lot of upside with Weeden. Besides the fans I've chatted with around town want change, and they want it now.
  20. No Ohio cities having bikeshare is insane, for a pretty urban state. Even OKC and San Antonio have embraced bikeshare.

Great shots Clueless. On a side note, has anyone tried noodlecat, any good? :) I'm always dying for a good gourmet mac n cheese. Kraft don't do me no good..
  22. Those are both from the CSU Student Center, which anyone can wander around inside of. I'd recommend grabbing lunch there some day since you work downtown, because the campus vibe is pretty cool, great compliment to downtown. Wait till Aug 26th, of course. ;) My style of taking photos is usually to keep a thin camera in my backpack and take it out whenever I come across a great scene. These pics were admittedly forced, and as much as I'd sometimes wait a minute to try and get more interesting activity adorning a street, I'll admit it probably wasn't the best day to force a photo tour. That said, I thought Cleveland did a great job of looking very photogenic.
  23. Oops, forgot these two:
  24. Was in town last week to get an apartment for this fall, and I was successful on that and the mission to nab a few pics. I must warn you guys, these are phone pics, and while a few of these shots are pretty good, no doubt I can do better later and with a better camera. Starting with some really bad Edgewater Park photos: West End of Lakewood The Melt! Murray Hill (Little Italy) An Irish flag in Little Italy? Presti's was recommended by several on the street, and it lived up to its rep, at least for lunch Midtown Downtown Did not like these apts for some reason Brutalism! This outdoor green hosts a huge weekly farmer's market Gotta love juicy union disputes
  25. AKA the old Viking Hall site, no? Good to hear there's been progress on this project. Undergoing asbestos abatement right now, scheduled for demolition in a few months. I believe it was originally supposed to be demolished 1-2 years ago-- I spent two semesters there and have been waiting to have a celebration the day that dump crumbles Man, I feel your pain..
