Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Just for completeness sake full Red Line service is restored. Also RTA's commuter alerts are really quite handy! http://commuteralerts.riderta.com/commuteralerts/

Cleveland: Downtown: Hilton Cleveland
From what I remember of materials class and structural design, skyscrapers are mostly compressive forces, and post-tensioned concrete works very well for such a load (concrete is great in compression but poor in tension). Steel is advantageous because it is light and easy to work with, while taking up less room, ideal for large, open glassy spaces like atriums and lobbies.

Yes indeed. But we're getting way off track. I heard rumblings of a FedEx store 'round these parts, too, but that was from a 3rd-hand source.

You don't like "Naan?" I had it Sunday night and I thought it was bangin'. I'm Desi (South Asian), and it wasn't spicy enough, the basmati was overcooked, the cauliflower was undercooked, and the lamb wasn't tender. Also the naan itself was another $1.25 ontop of the meal, when it should be included. That-place-on-detroit, the name always escapes me, is usually where I go if mom's cooking isn't available. :p

A sign is up in the retail space in phase one down from Moca announcing "Chapati," a new Indian restaurant coming soon. Well it'll probably be better than "Naan" in the new student center.

Cleveland Rapid Rail Construction Projects (Non-Service Issues)
Really bad camera phone picture, but east bound rails have been re-installed at the future Little Italy-University Circle Rapid station. No catenaries when the photo was taken. Also significant superstructure work appears near complete. EDIT: Dammit the picture didn't attach? I'll figure this out... EDIT 2: Sorry for the late fix, but there was a concert today at the new student center.

I agree, but I can't quite place my finger on why either. Maybe it's because getting off at the Adelbert Road HealthLine station it's hardly visible and off to the side of the library or because its longest facade has no entrance? I dunno. I guess I'll see when school starts and I use it. For one last semester. :p Interestingly now Thwing has classrooms.

CLEVELAND - Gay Games 9 Opening Ceremony
Wow! Fantastic time! But now I'm sad I missed Veranda L'nai and my friend Lady-J (drag queen in the orange and pink tu-tu). Ah well, maybe I can catch her on the Mall tomorrow.

Yes, I do actually. The Case grapevine rumors: God I hope it's not true. Hence why I didn't comment. :p Also my source was not fond of the building from the beginning so....

Cleveland: Downtown: Halle Building + Annex Conversion
No. It was for store/warehouse overflow. Almost like a factory showroom. My father shopped in there for furniture a few times in the 1940s. I don't know when it was converted for parking. Close, it was menswear and home furnishings until the 1950s, when it was converted to parking and warehousing. It followed a larger trend of department stores adding parking garages, with the May Co. garage as well. The building itself is clearly not designed for parking, with structural columns regularly placed throughout and a central egress/entrance ramp (I hate parking in it). Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
Here's my idea for expanding the South Campus....... I regret my senior project idea now.... Shoulda done this instead. But Standard Parking owns the lot you'd like to build on, and they are seldom happy to give up parking spaces (Veal Center is designed to keep their parking intact...). Plus Case is very capital poor right now. It would take a large donation campaign to get new dorms on the scale of the Village built there. Yeah, we need them, and that's a great spot for them, but building dorms doesn't seem to be what the school cares about. We are super short on space, though... Anyone here a rich alumni?

Asbestos abatement means they'll hold off on that for a long time. They are building a new dorm on the old throwing field. Babs is super excited about it. I saw pile drivers and foundation work being done.

Cleveland: Downtown: Truman Building & Security Federal Building Restoration
So the company I intern with has a folder in our projects called "Truman Flats" and as far as I can tell, it was for asbestos abatement, but according to my co-workers the project is still going on. Fun fact.

Well that makes my righteously indignant letter to the editor for The Observer at Case Western far less historically accurate. Oops. Was the other side of the street, around the current Triangle apartments where the awful strip mall-thing used to be empty land before that as well? *Goes back to lurking* OK did some Googling...is it related to this? http://www.thecwruobserver.com/you-dont-know-what-youve-got-til-its-gone/ It is indeed. My letter should be in this week's issue, according to the editor. I am aware of all the houses and mansions CWRU tore down to build its dorms, and its horrifically depressing. This is getting off-topic though, and I don't want to derail this thread.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
The student center is a "debacle" in the sense that it went through a student vote, that student vote was accepted, and then we were informed the voted upon design would not be built, because the parking structure under Kelvin Smith and the field was too far down in the water table (why was there no soil study before design started is beyond me). :? Additionally, we were informed about the same time that we'd be getting a student center for the "use of student groups," when student activity funding was cut. Furthermore, Case ignored many requests from student groups for what the student center should contain for, you know, students, and instead bowed out to alumni. And finally, we were informed that any further discussion was closed. (Full disclosure, they ignored requests from my group, CWRU Film Society flat out. >:( ) So, yes it's on schedule for construction, and it's funded (thank you Tinkham-Veal). ThinkBox, however, I happen to quite like, and wish they'd hurry up! :-P When I stated "don't bet your firstborn" I meant on the rest of the planned dorms, West Quad, etc. The performing arts center/community center in the Temple is still, apparently, scheduled to go forward, but administration was tight-lipped about it during the school year, and now it's summer, so I dunno. I'm not saying that I know someone-who-has-family-who..., but I do. >_< But they don't tell me much. Rats. And it's not like I'm a gossip! The horror! Anyway, for now, that's all I know. Once I'm back in classes, I'll surely hear more whispers on what Babs has got under those business suit sleeves. It's not, however, out of the question, for Case to launch another funding campaign.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Shh, I'm up late. Don't tell anyone. The 114 Million was raised recently because of the previous drop (and to further fund Tinkham-Veale Center and ThinkBox). This is what I meant by tighter straights. Case isn't broke and begging, but it's in no position to spend on such projects. The reason I say Case feels cut off is because on a typical student day, the engineers (I'm a Civil) trudge from dorms/apartments to the Quad, and back without really ever stepping foot anywhere else in University Circle. We call this the "bubble" (apparently...) in Case's student outreach programs. I suppose a part of the bubble are people who don't know what the sun is, but that's another topic. The humanities majors, however, get a nice view of Mather Quad and get to mill around in parks and use the facilities more immediately visible as "Case." But I'm off topic. I don't think there will be any money for that pedestrian bridge to the long stalled West Quad anytime soon, either. It strikes me as a ridiculous waste of funds, and that money should go to building and maintaining drainage systems in my mind, because parts of Case like to flood. (Or we could build bridges for the seasonal rivers we get! XD) I'd like to see those new dorms, but eh, it doesn't matter to me much anymore, because I'll be living at Parkside Dwellings soon. Still, I feel bad for the Freshman that have to live in barracks. Also, that plan mentions "retail spaces" and such, which would really make Case feel urban with 3-4 story dorm blocks and street level retail, but we'd need more then 5,000 undergrads for that to practical. (But I'll dream about street level retail and zero set back anyway!) Also, why do I have to assemble a turtle to post? :/

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Hello there, I'm new to this board. I've been lurking for a while, though. Anyway, I'm a student at Case, and have a few... rumors..., I suppose, on that 2005/6 Fat Man With a Surfboard plan. At the moment, Case isn't prioritizing construction. Despite that God-awful "student center" debacle (which was funded largely by a private donation), and the ThinBox lab, Case is currently investing money in other things. Most of this involves hiring researchers, professors, and enticing students. I'd love to see anything come of those plans, especially because Case feels so closed off from the rest of Cleveland, and very anti-urban. It also has dorms that feel rather like cinder block, asbestos filled cardboard boxes. But, as I said, Case's current focus seems to be on academics versus infrastructure. Plus, Case's endowment dropped drastically from its 2005/6 levels when that plan was conceived (not that the university is in dire straights, but things are rather tight). In conclusion, we may see some of those projects, such as the "student center" and Uptown (I really like Uptown, actually), but as for anything else, don't bet your firstborn on it.
