  1. Anti science? What does the oil industry have to do with a wind energy tax credit? We don't use (much) oil to produce electricity. Man, what an awful take.
  2. With changing construction design, materials, and code, it seems silly to assume what you build today would be applicable for a dome/roof designed 20 years later. There is a good chance whatever they built then wouldn't even work for a modern structure today.
  3. At this point, I welcome any new apartment construction. The majority of the places downtown are not worth the price they're asking for, regardless of location. It took me months to find one I was happy with. The problem is prices have been slowly creeping up without any improvement to the properties. But I'm okay with it because downtown is supposed to be expensive? Hmm :? As for the phase2 rendering, I think it's an improvement over the first iteration. Less surface parking and bit more density. I agree though, I'm surprised with the lack of retail/restaurants with water frontage.
  4. I Google Street View'ed the address. It looks like there are a bunch of new or recently renovated houses down that street. I'm guessing there was talk of razing the blighted apartment for more new houses and some preservationist threw a fit.
  5. There was an indirect quote a couple days ago from Doug Price, ceo of k&d, saying they were focusing on the east ohio building now that the deal for the Hanna building is done. Purchase by April, apartments early 2014. It was the very last sentence in this article: http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/09/kd_group_closes_hanna_building.html
  6. There was some discussion in the May Company building thread. It closed about a month ago. Some speculation but nobody seems to know why it closed or what it will become. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,16941.510.html
  7. There is a "coming soon" sign for J Gumbo on the plywood storefront next door to jimmy johns. Good to see it progressing too.
  8. That's good to hear. With momentum building in the theater district, I expect spill over between it and east fourth down euclid and prospect. Good job k&d. Now get moving on the east ohio building. :)
  9. The deadline for the county relocation proposals is September 14. I wonder if they'll dodge any apartment and office questions until the submitted plans go public (assuming they submitted anything).
  10. So you're saying Kasich cut spending more than necessary and is looking to cut taxes to rid the excess? Heaven forbid. Somebody organize a recall.
  11. I generally prefer new construction over repurposing older buildings... but those vinyl sided buildings look out of place. The architecture and strange setback from the street look horrible. Maybe it's just this side of the new buildings. Most of the others don't look this bad. See, now there's a decent view.8-)
  12. Excuse to go somewhere with better weather?
  13. I can't be the only one that would rather have the area west of the Browns stadium developed instead? This just smells of another project taking the easy way out with undeveloped land. Normally I'm in favor of any real development because momentum always leads to more projects. But I was hoping to see the port moved to the east side to vacate more land around FEB.
  14. It's a dumbass list when it's negative. It's an accurately, awesome list when it's positive.
  15. No complaints yet. Not the biggest fan of how much money they are spending. But it's no surprise with that many properties for sale. It's nice to see the marketing push from CBRE, but realistically the buildings are going to local companies. A for-sale ad in the plain dealer would have been sufficient. :-P The real fun begins in September after the proposal deadline. Then we'll see how transparent the county really is...
  16. I keep reading stories about companies based out of W Virginia or Texas or wherever. What percentage of leases and drilling is done by local companies? I'd like to revenue and profits stay in the area. Cleveland grew up by having steel, oil, and large banks headquartered here. Doesn't have near the long lasting affect on the area if profits are going to Houston, or worse overseas to BP.
  17. That facade was amazingly awesome. I'll be pissed as hell if it isn't reconstructed. What facade are you guys referring to? Pics?

Didn't you know retail space is single-use? If the store goes out of business, it needs to be abandoned and rebuilt the next town over.

Suburban development is nothing but a ponzi scheme. And the local politicians are just tax junkies looking for their next fix. Why redevelop existing property when it's easier and cheaper to build on empty green space. For a region that isn't growing much, if at all, I don't see the benefit of new construction. That money is better off being used to redevelop an area that needs it -- like, oh, I don't know, almost every blighted neighborhood outside of Cleveland. But it's not my money or property. And I don't even live in the area. So whatever happens, good luck to the folks in Lyndhurst.

It's funny seeing the mayor's reaction to the space becoming a park. Oh no! We can't build another mall or office park! The skeptic in me says Acacia is just holding out for a better offer, using the preservationist offer as leverage. But they already have better offer from Hemingway. Maybe they think it's worth even more?
  21. That's hilarious. And true. I'm sure the windows are decent sized, but the sculpting and shadows from the outside makes them look like portholes on a submarine.
  22. I have no problem with the country moving into new construction, provided that taxpayers aren't paying to build it. If private developers put up their own money to demo Breuer tower (or something else) for a new building and 20 year lease from the county, sounds good to me.
  23. Interesting. Congrats on getting the project moving. What feedback have you gotten from big time publishers?
  24. When was the last time a large parking structure was torn down for new construction? Parking is easy money.
