  1. Litt on more than one occasion has downplayed extending Mall C over the tracks because it'd block light to the convention center. I can't be the only one that thinks that's a dumb reason to be against the idea. I understand the desire to have natural light but It's nothing some light wells and bulbs wouldn't cure. Plus I'd think a direct connection to the CC would be way more important to potential meetings than a view of the lake that most people wouldn't see anyway. The guy comes off as out of touch with the real issues. If you want something iconic than it needs to be useful first and foremost.
  2. The CC development patterns are a function of 70 something Toby Cosgrove. The guy came from a different era and sadly just doesn't know any better. A campus in downtown Rochester is hugely forward thinking. We can't get the Clinic to build something pedestrian and transit friendly.

    ^ Nope.
  4. That is more or less what was proposed the first time it went through design review. Maybe with a bit less detailing, but it's hard to tell with the early renderings. And people complained about that too. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,27220.msg733139.html#msg733139
  5. The canopy and sign look fine to me. Better than a huge blade sign bolted to the building. Something small and unobtrusive like this at the entrance is perfect. It'll be made of granite so at least it won't be some aluminum and plastic toy.
  6. ^ Except the taxpayers own the Q so I would expect the public to pay for major repairs like that. Some of the rumoured changes are absurd. Terms like "functionally obsolete" are just code for we want something new and shiny.
  7. You aren't wrong. There is nothing wrong with the Q. It could easily host an All Star game as-is. This is just posturing to get the city to fork over more money for renovations
  8. Agreed. That is pretty ridiculous. But I wouldn't expect anything else if they are trying to take property from somebody. They need some kind of justification, even if it's flimsy. Thanks for the insight. It sounds like these large scale eminent domain cases are difficult to swallow if there is no crime or other drug activity involved in the properties, which there didn't seem to be in this case.
  9. I'm about 10+ years late for this, but I was wondering if anybody here lived in Lakewood when the "West End" project was proposed. I never heard of it before a couple days ago and found a few articles that were interesting. Just wondering if anybody has some local flavor to add. How did the developers start this project? Was the Lakewood government/mayor ever implicated in shady backroom deals? Did anybody see potential renderings? Sorry, I don't like bumping threads without actual info, but I just found this project and neighborhood fight interesting. I couldn't find a "West End" thread in the abandoned project forum. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2003-11-10/news/0311100205_1_eminent-domain-lakewood-public-projects http://www.clev/elandmagazine.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=E73ABD6180B44874871A91F6BA5C249C&nm=&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=1578600D80804596A222593669321019&tier=4&id=17D0F0D43A294EBA9D36CE8B3F3197AA
  10. ^ It doesn't sound like Optima has any interest in redeveloping the building themselves. Michelle's article alluded to the deal with Vintage Development Group being contingent on winning the catalytic tax credit. When they lost, the deal fell through. My guess is they've been looking to completely unload the property since they lost the bid for the county headquarters.
  11. Seems like every other day there is a Republican led bill or amendment cutting Amtrak funding.

The ship horns bother me most. It sounds like they are in my backyard. I've been in this place about 6 months and haven't gotten used to it yet, though I don't know how often the shops were floating by in the dead of winter. I can deal with consistent noise. It's the once a night events that bug me. Maybe we'll get a fan or something for some white noise during the night.
  13. Do the trains and container ships rolling (floating) through Ohio City/Tremont wake anybody else up? Like freaking clockwork around 4:20am a blaring horn from from the flats wakes me up - likely the same ship. It's incessant for a couple minutes. I lived downtown for a few years and never had this much trouble sleeping through the night. The wife suggested melatonin. I suggested :drunk::drunk:
  14. That is awesome. Their website has a great skyline pic too. Bad news it says they're opening Winter 2016 which I think is a few month delay.

Cavs looked good. Never thought Chicago was in it though I'm sure they are happy with the split.
  16. Hopefully it doesn't stay green space for long. Here is a random address on Bridge about a 10 minute walk to Nano Brew. About a third of the space bounded by a 10 minute walk is either unbuildable or single-use commercial, like Lutheran and St. Ignatius. Greenspace along West 25th would be a waste of space, IMO. We are probably years away from running out of infill space. Hopefully by then the hillside is stabilized permanently for residential construction.
  17. The master plan for that area shows some kind of mixed-income development there. I vaguely remember seeing a more recent plan for some kind of green space there until the hillside is stabilized but I can't find the image. I think that is more likely in the short-term. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/cwp/other/Detroit_Ave_East.pdf
  18. Will they start installing the facade on the tower before it tops off?

I gave JR Smith a standing O for knocking Crowder the bleep out. Boston was playing dirty knowing their season was over. What do they have to prove playing like that?
  20. ^ What a great project. I'm glad it's all coming together. I wonder how they're doing with preleasing.
  21. For what it's worth I sent an email to the landmark commission person representing Buckeye-Shaker and another to the city Council person for this ward. I got an email back from the planning commission saying the demolition was tabled.
  22. Edwins plans to demo the larger building at corner of East 130th and Buckeye for a pocket park and parking. And renovate a much smaller building for a handful of apartments. Seems completely backwards. We should work to salvage buildings like these with apartments over retail. Shameful if the planning commission approves this. None of the pictures or agenda items discuss structural issues. It's just typical neglect that would be a great renovation project. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/2015/04232015/index.php 8.Shaker Square Historic District: Case 15-033 Edwins Next Student Housing Shaker Square Plaza 13000 Buckeye Road Demolition Ward 4 K. 23. Can we at least wait until Cleveland stops losing population before we worry about gentrification? Investment radiating outward from downtown is exactly what has happened. Keep in mind just 20 years ago all of the neighborhoods you mentioned were still in decline. Just follow the development path from downtown to Gordon Square. The east side has been slower to see this growth, but it's also in worse shape. There are glimmers of hope in neighborhoods adjacent to UC. And a nucleus in places like S. Collinwood that aren't entirely dead yet.
  24. A possibly easier solution than trying to sync separate rail systems would be just increase frequency so nobody is waiting more than 8-10 minutes before transferring. I agree completely about a separate walkway between the rapid lines in Tower City. I'd think people would use them more often if it wasn't considered a transfer to board the Waterfront line coming from the airport.

I won't give their site a click to read it. Eff 'em.
