Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
You bring up some good points. There seems to be a lot of disparate projects along the lakefront. And despite the Lakefront plan, there seems to be a good chance something will be left undone or done poorly. I expect the transportation center will be the odd man out, but we'll see. An unusual problem to have, though. Too much happening too quickly.

^ I like the metallic or fluorescent orange as the primary color. I think a brown helmet would be hard to spot of you're a QB looking for your guys. Stick with something bright. The new unis need to work on the field first, look good second. Not that they can't do both...

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
There are two levels of parking. The first is ground level behind each retail storefront. The second is the entire second floor of the building, edge to edge. Then the courtyard is on the third floor, which is also the first floor of apartments. The courtyard is on the third (fourth?) floor above the parking garage tucked inside the building. Nothing wrong with the apartment residents wanting their own private courtyard. The street interaction is still going to be retail on the first floor.

I don't have information on the bit players growing or relocating into the city, other than the handful that have been reported by the PD or DCA quarterly updates. The largest, and most recent announcement being Millenia and it's 200 employees, but that is not yet official. Certainly not 2,500 people worth as with Key, Eaton, Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospitals. What's wrong with not wanting our major employers to move people out of the city? Even if some others are arguably picking up the slack? What does GDP of the metro have to do with employment in Cleveland, which by the way trails the rest of the metro?

Then by all means, enlighten me. I must have missed the press coverage for company X moving Y jobs into Cleveland of similar scale as Key or UH. Not all growth can be organic.

My comment was more for the employees leaving Cleveland, not necessarily an indictment of the health and stability of UH or the region as a whole. Also good news. Progressive seems to be doing well. Thanks, Flo.

I'm guessing the laneway concept is more like an old fashion arcade, of which we have two already with one of them on life support and the other doing alright at the expense of the first -- The Arcade and 5th Street Arcades. edit: Corrected name of The Arcade, as somebody pointed out below.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Key is streamlining office space because they've been downsizing their employees for years. If that's not a glass-half-full attitude, nothing is. As for it being an indication of weakness, when have you seen companies rightsize their operations in times of relative stability? It doesn't happen often. While other companies are recapitalizing for growth, Key is restructuring for efficiency. Don't say I didn't warn you. I have a relative that works for Key in the Higbee building. My relative is not happy Key is moving them to Brooklyn.

It's just a comparison of a similarly sized bank and region. Key has been shedding employees for the better part of 15 years. Key moving hundreds of employees out of downtown to Brooklyn is not a positive development for the downtown office market.

^ Meanwhile PNC is building a new skyscraper in downtown Pittsburgh. Key continues to cut cost and liabilities, IMO to make itself an acquisition target.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I'll just repost what I put in the cleveland.com comments. We're going to have this argument as long as people of Greater Cleveland view those that ride the bus as part of the problem. Tens of thousands of people come through PS daily. Some by choice, some entirely out of necessity. I hear a lot of gnashing of teeth by people that will likely never set foot in PS regardless of it being a transit hub or not. So why are we listening to them when designing a new public space? If you want peace and quiet, walk 2 blocks to Mall B and C. Virtually no bus and car traffic. Besides you'll get a great view of the city looking south back toward Tower City. Closing Ontario and turning PS into two unique spaces sounds like the perfect compromise.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
Here is the tentative site plan for the townhomes at 9509 Lake (St. Thomas Lutheran Church). I got this in an email blast from Brickhaus. Not sure how I feel about the driveway going around the property. That is a lot of lost greenspace. But they probably didn't have a choice if they were going for lakeviews from all of the houses.

Sounds plausible. Only the 4 story pedestal will use structural steel. The only thing that is steel is the podium, which will include the meeting rooms, lobby, etc... The whole tower is post-tensioned concrete.

On the subject of Oracle, they recently entered a purchase agreement to buy Micros, Inc to the tune of $5.3 billion. Micros has a division in Solon with over 200 employees that work on retail (and related) software. Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
That is probably true. But there were a couple buildings that had a poor reputation when I was looking for a place downtown. Whether real or just perceived, the Chesterfield was one of them. We hear how vacancy downtown is <5%. In reality, the newer buildings are 100% full. Some of the older, more neglected buildings likely have more empty units.

Pet Peeves!
I could see it being annoying for the waitstaff because it sure as hell annoys me. The waiter comes over to take our drink or food order and the Mrs. hasn't even picked up the menu. I've yelled at her enough that it's less of an issue now though.

^ What is wrong with the Indians scoreboard? It was replaced around '04-'05 and is still very bright and clear. If anything, the next one will be bigger for more advertising space to replace the static signs around it.
