Cleveland: Downtown: Gateway District: Development and News
For what it's worth, I saw construction lights at East 9th and Bolivar in the upper floors above Goodfellers (which has been closed for months). Looks like they are renovating the upper floors. You could see brand new metal studs through the windows. I'm not sure if the project recently started, but I don't remember seeing the lights on before.

^ The building is only two floors. Red will be taking up the whole space. Restaurant on the first floor. Banquet / meeting space on the second floor.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
What happened to this space next to the Union Club on Euclid Ave, across from the Halle building? Google street view shows the surface lot at ground level a few years ago. I was walking around a couple weeks ago and noticed it was dug out along the foundation of the neighboring building. It's probably been like this for a while, but I never noticed. The neighboring building has some of the brick/concrete material torn off. Who owns the space now? Were they planning to expand into it (interesting) or just build a parking garage (boring)?

He continually posts bad news and craps on anything even remotely positive. I appreciate the nuggets of good news, so please continue posting them. It provides at least a bit of signal to all the noise in this thread.

Cleveland: Downtown: Cleveland Athletic Club Redevelopment
Mast climbers were attached to the facade a week or two ago. It was obvious something was gearing up. I was waiting for some kind of press release. Glad to hear the good news.

Higher Education
There is nothing luxurious about me working my ass off to keep from being replaced by a software developer in China or India that can do my job for less money. I don't expect handouts for the decisions I made in life, no matter how good or bad. That is a loser's mentality. Countless industries have come and gone over the last century. Supporting people that make bad decisions -- even ones that weren't entirely in their control -- only encourages people to be lazy. Now the education bubble is going to pop some day. Tuition costs have gone through the roof in my lifetime. I just hope I'm not around when it does...

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
In football, the coaching staff is just as important as the players. There are countless examples of a new regime making an organization playoff contenders in 1-2 years. That makes fans and owners extremely impatient. You get two years to show progress or you're gone. That kind of turnaround is rare in the NBA. It took 4-5 years before the Thunder became contenders with Durant. It takes years of development and tremendous luck in consecutive drafts. Basketball is 90% about the players and team chemistry. You can't buy wins in the NBA unless you live in Boston or L.A.. That generally makes people more patient. You don't really have a choice but to be. Even if it all goes right the team can be stuck in limbo for decades. Byron Scott is safe until the Cavs are expected to win. That may not be for another year or two. The kid gloves come off once the expectation is there. A slow start, say 2-15 or something, and he's gone.

That has to be the stupidest idea I've ever heard. You go to school. You takes your chances. Like many decisions one makes in life, college is a gamble.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The Cavs sign and traded Lebron for draft picks. Better to get something, anything, than nothing. Besides someone playing just for money has locker room cancer written all over him. There is nothing in it for the Cavs to call a players bluff. I don't mean to speak out of school. Irving seems like a sharp kid. Not saying any of this will happen. But I guarantee the Cavs would pick sign and trade over letting him walk free and clear.

Congrats to him. He's the best young PG in the league. The sky is the limit for this kid.

He won't lose a cent with a sign and trade. That's how the Heat could afford 3 max contracts when Lebron left. Sorry the bullcrap i've seen in the NBA the past few years has made me beyond bitter. At this point I just expect Kyrie to leave.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I imagine folks weren't expecting to get stuck standing outside because the train to broke down. I probably wouldn't be dressed appropriately either. I frequently just wear a hoodie walking from my car to my job, even if it's cold outside since it's only a short walk. If the doors to my building were locked for whatever reason, I would be stuck outside freezing my butt off.

^ Interesting. Doesn't Weston own a bunch of surface parking in the warehouse district? They don't exactly have a history of redevelopment around here do they? I still get pissed off when I see the Columbia building still on google street view. No more god damn parking.

From the article: Does anybody actually believe this? Schochet has made it clear the city doesn't need more or new office space.

Cleveland: Hotel Development
^ Yeah, very cool. The article links to a new website for the hotel too, which has a larger rendering. http://www.westincleveland.com/ edit: Here's a direct link to the rendering. Looks pretty good. The blade sign for the Urban Farmer restaurant looks odd. But overall a good update to probably the ugliest building downtown. http://www.westincleveland.com/NewWestinClevelandRendering-web.jpg

The turbine is supposedly only temporary. Probably a good idea to leave it off the banner if it won't be there in a year or two. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/09/cleveland_state_university_win.html

Someone should photoshop a Sherwin Williams skyscraper somewhere in that banner and email it back to them. Maybe they'll get the hint.

You guys are right. My mistake. I quickly skimmed over the photos and didn't see it. I retract my comment.

Cleveland: Hotel Development
Definitely Agree. The East 9th towers all destroy the surrounding side streets with their garages. I would agree if this garage had some kind of lobby or retail on the ground floor integrated into the garage. As it stands (and will stand), the area around the base is just as dead as those side streets off E. 9th.

Cleveland: Innerbelt News
The scope and engineering of this project is impressive, even if some of it is useless like the pocket parks. I'm no traffic engineer, but it seems they are removing several of the feeder on/off ramps. I'm guessing they think this will improve traffic around the area? From an outsiders view, it looks like the new bridges are about making it easier to bypass downtown altogether, while making it more convoluted for people working and living downtown. Like having to drive out to E14 to take 77S. Seems stupid to me, but what do I know.

That old building has some potential. Any renderings or site plans yet, or holding off until closer to construction?
