  1. My company sells product to Kmart/Sears and the suppliers of our type are all selling carefully and watching closely how quickly they pay. No stock if suppliers jittery could lead to them closing... As for Bass Pro/Cabela's, this would seem to put into doubt or delay the planned Bass Pro in Boston Heights (next to new Costco and Arhaus HQ), which never broke ground, despite Costco being on Bass Pro Drive (though this store would be almost 1 hour from the Cabela's in Avon and would serve south CLE/CAK..
  2. Shapiro's original Indy location has been on the fringe of downtown for a century. They also have a mall llocation in the equivalent of Kenwood.
  3. Interesting about Shapiro's... An institution in Indy, much like Montgomery Inn (which failed in Indy a decade ago) is in Cincinnati. However, Shapiro's just closed a large location in upscale Carmel in Indy, so surprised they are branching out to another similar suburb, out of town, now. As for Montgomery Inn.. It ISN'T that great but it IS an experience... A destination. If nothing more....
  4. On paper, I have been impressed by (and, as a Clevelander, a bit envious of) all I have read about what's been happening in Detroit, development-wise - and wish the city well.. On a recent visit, however, I must admit I was surprisingly, underwhelmed by the Midtown area near the Shinola (and Filson and Will) store(s) - destinations in our trip - near where the West Elm Hotel will be located. Like totally, totally underwhelmed... (as we were by the loved Eastern Market and lauded DIA, too...) I still like much about Detroit, after many visits - but just didn't get the fuss over the above. What am I missing???
  5. I live in Chagrin Falls - easily "Cleveland" and am 35 mins from CLE but only about 55 mins from CAK. CAK and CLE are still fairly close to millions in the region. For the leisure traveler, traveling once yearly, the drive shouldn't matte much. For the Canton business traveler, well, .... But when it saves my company big $ - or when it saves my family vacation $ - CAK is no sweat to reach. Miss the Southwest to LGA/BOS though.
  6. I have not seen yet which gates or how many but would it seem logical they will go to A(?) in place of AA moving to C (which could not happen sooner....)? Hate the empty C gates whole walking to "banjo" for United slights (where I type this right now). CAK served a low-fare purpose when UAL/CO had a hub in CLE and no room for low cost airlines... Without the hub, and with low cost routes there, CAK should maintain its limited hub routes for local travelers, but hopefully will stop stealing pax from CLE in any meaningful way. Stronger CLE is best for area.
  7. Ashley Furniture going next to Costco.
  8. With regards to a city like Cincinnati having a Container Store years before Cleveland: It's sometimes funny how things work in retail. It's all about the right location and timing and other factors coming together at the right time... Sometimes there is great interest (IKEA started looking in Cleveland for a site at least 15+ years ago... but still no store....): Cleveland had a Nordstrom store a dozen years before Cincinnati and several years before Columbus - and Crate&Barrel opened in Cleveland in 2003 - but not in Cincinnati until 2008 (and Columbus 2004). Cincinnati had a Tiffany store 15 years before Cleveland did - and a decade before Columbus, but Cleveland had a Saks store 2 decades before Columbus and 5 years before Cincy, etc, etc, etc....
  9. Here is info on Coastal taco from an article in me about the opening of the flats locationn. another article I read back then noted that it was the center owner ggp decision not to proceed with the restauranteurs. "While there was talk of a La Place Center location for Coastal Taco, Doody says that deal is dead. But if all goes as planned, taco fans on both sides of town might soon see one of these in their own neighborhoods. “We would do one east and one west fairly quickly,” says Doody. “We try to keep it rolling.” http://m.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2016/05/09/beachy-coastal-taco-hopes-to-make-a-big-splash-in-the-flats
  10. Coastal has still been listed as a pending matter in Beachwood planning... but is off...
  11. No Coastal Taco happening now at LaPlace... per comments by owner Rick Doody, who owns Cedar Creek at LaPlace, too.He said GGP went a different direction...
  12. You are correct... Leasing very competitive right now among Eton, Pinecrest, Beachwood, Legacy... Container Store was on early leasing plans for Pinecrest, at Harvard and 271. They have also backed out of two leases at Legacy Village over the years, I was told, including an announced CLE debut at Legacy opening back in 2003... (along with Fleming's, which ended up at Eton...)
  13. Based on the striped awning design and the stated goal of a potential Beachwood store as their first entry in the CLE market, the tenant in the former Sushi Rock space on the bottom left front corner of La Place (bottom and middle images) may be Corner Bakery (a better, Panera-like fast casual spot)
  14. "Organized Living" was the short-lived chain that had an Eton store a decade ago.
  15. Interesting... They have already reopened in Columbus. This space will be the part of the former Joseph-Beth, facing the interior of Legacy, that was not taken up by Granite City when it opened.

Wasn't the situation that the testing company had a long-term play or pay contract with the state and that's why the program has been kept in place and is now free (since it is really needles...)?
  17. It has been apparent for probably 1.5 years that the Pub wasn't cutting it. Something about this mall and this spot that make it tough for a restaurant there. Beachwood's original plan for several new restaurants in front was to make it a dining destination like many other malls are. Maggiano's seems to do OK business but space WAY too large. Cooper's Hawk in talks to go on Harvard just south of Pinecrest. Seasons 52 would need a better spot than this. If this tough restaurant spot stays as a restaurant, I am thinking a BJ's (looking for east side spot) or Yard House is more the type that needs to be there. Spot can't easily be seen from Cedar so little impulse business...
  18. Much of the roof of the former LaPlace/Beachwood Borders (and roof/walls of the entire middle/front of the center) is now removed (big crane there to do it)... Still not a word out/sign up to note what's coming - but these are big changes. #ContainerStore Also - vertical construction appears to have begun at Pinecrest in Orange... though the website has finally changed to say "Opening 2018" instead of 2017...

Reading an early May 2016 story about the recently announced Milwaukee IKEA - and Cleveland came up from the IKEA spokesman, Joe Roth: "That exit off 94 and Drexel Avenue did not exist up until three or four years ago," Roth said. "And in some of the older, more established metropolitan areas it's just difficult to find 25 to 35 acres of land. We had the same challenge in St. Louis that took us 10 years. We've been looking in Cleveland and we still haven't found the site there. When you're going to put one store in the major metropolitan area, you just need to get it right the first time and it was worth the wait for us." http://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/news/2016/05/05/why-ikea-chose-to-open-its-first-wisconsin.html And another CLE IKEA Joe Roth mention in a March 2016 story on a potential Norfolk store - finally announced in June: "In the meantime, Hampton Roads shouldn’t feel too left out. There are only 41 Ikeas nationwide, with the 42nd opening in Las Vegas in May. Roth said it took 10 years before the company recently found a site in St. Louis, and it’s still looking for a spot in Cleveland. Stores for Memphis; Indianapolis; Columbus, Ohio; and Jacksonville, Fla., are opening within the next two years." http://pilotonline.com/business/biz-buzz/so-when-will-ikea-come-to-hampton-roads-rabid-fans/article_951380a7-91c8-5da6-94dc-9a0652928942.html
  20. Whole Foods' (sort of) version of Trader Joe's is how a 365 a store has been described. However, these stores are much larger than a TJ's (30K square feet, the size of the current Woodmere Whole Foods, vs pehaps 10-15K square feet for a TJ's)... and have much more of a selection, with slant towards lower price point and fewer frills than regular WF store. Having them near a full line Whole Foods store is their plan, just like Rack stores are near full line Nordstrom stores.
  21. i think Whole Foods Woodmere could become a WF 365 store, yes - with new store at Pinecrest
  22. Pinecrest construction in full swing Lots of big yellow machines! A crane on site now. Leveling.... Digging. Wall making...
  23. Speaking of chocolate shop... A Kilwin's candy/ice cream shop was on the FEB leasing map, in/near the Beerhead space in the past 12-18 months... Also, the "road" between Alley Cat and Coastal Taco appears to be (mostly) car ready bit has been closed for pedestrian traffic each time I have been there.a the meant to be people only.. bit being able to drive by storefronts would likely be beneficial to business traffic. E 4th is closed to cars but is a natural walk-through due to stadium/arena parking etc...
  24. Stow Macy's was first store I thought of on *closing* list. We'll see. If Whole Foods isn't building at Pinecrest, and unsure if they are (Rumors say no... And the plastic sheeting recently pu on Woodmere store's ceiling + recent avacancy in adjacent storefront/lack of building on WFoods site yet at Pinecrest = are they remodeling? As regular shopper - I hope not ! I want a new store, but a smaller, sleeker Macy's could bring a draw at Pinecrest... Or a moderately uoscale/midsized Von Maur!
  25. The UH store is in a white elephant of a development (that I can't imagine draws enough customers) and you have to think this store is on the bubble. However, it would seem unlikely that Macy's would dump a newish east side store and build another at a more desirable nearby location like Beachwood (doubt they'd get approval).. They may just pull out entirely from the east side...
