  1. As a followup to the above nonstop list... I did some quick math (using the horrible CLE website) - and (generously, if seasonal included) - looks like CLE has around 32 nonstop destinations after the UAL revisions... So, we go from fairly decent on nonstops to "not even Indy".. Not sure much more could be cut... given what the other cities noted above have. oh boy...
  2. Seems odd that UAL would add CLE-AUS nonstop last Fall if dehubbing was inevitable, doesn't it? That flight is now understandably gone.
  3. I've done some quick website checking to see how many nonstops other nearby, smaller and/or de-hubbed cities have currently have (some stated, others I counted) Some of these may include seasonal and/or multiple airports in NYC, etc... not sure how many CLE will keep, but: Columbus - 30 non stop destinations Indy - 34 PIT - 36 STL - 61... (12MM passengers - down from 30MM in 2000) Nashville- 50 CVG - 51 CLE didn't have new facilities, like some of the above, but did have a hub. Now, old building, no hub. It was already the biggest market with the worst air service... Now this.
  4. PIT lost a US hub - and gained a DL nonstop to Paris CDG... We can dream, right?
  5. This is terrible news... However, I'm interested in finding out what the loss of flights equates to in UAL passengers - at least on paper.. If 9MM passengers used CLE last year overall - what is the revised # when taking out the cancelled UAL cities/flights? And what does our air service - in # of destinations served - look like now when compared to other cities? NEO's 3.5MM or so population is similar in size to TPA, DEN, SAN, MSP (but already has 2nd tier air service when compared to those cities...) How will we look vs 1MM+ smaller metros like IND, CMH, STL, PIT, CVG - which don't have/or have lost hubs (let alone vs smaller but big-hub CLT...). From past checks - most of those cities, CLT aside, have 40ish nonstop. Not sure how many CLE will have when UAL cuts are added on to cities where UAL wont' fly (DL, US, WN hubs, etc...). Truth be told, I fly almost weekly on UAL - but the loss of 40 nonstop cities won't hurt those travels (though will hurt CLE's pride, big-time) - as I almost always connect in ORD or IAH simply due to $ and lack of nonstop where I'm going anyway...
  6. I mean the above from a peace of mind standard...
  7. MD88PILOT - I'm certainly not suggesting RJ pilots are unworthy or more experienced pilots are always better... I average 60-70 flights a year - and 3/4 are on ERJs... so I'm used to them - and will fly them hundreds of times in the coming years. Plus, I know the planes do much of the work (you know what I mean...). But when I'm a passenger landing in that snowstorm at CLE w/30 mph gusts - even though odds are overwhelming that we're landing safely - I'd take the tried & true B737 w/25,000 hr vet at controls than smaller, ERJ145 with 1000 hrs pilot, anyday... If I'm way off base... you know best.. tell me so...
  8. Docta.. I like "A" single seats in ERJ145s too. What I don't like are the inexperienced, 24 year old, $25,000/yr pilots flying them... and the fact they fly like the small planes they are. The 170s fly like much bigger jets....
  9. ERJs are fine if all could be ERJ170s. Those are super planes, almost superior to older mainline. But the 145s, etc... So sick of those Oh and hate they have prop planes again at CLE, even to DC, and hate non-jetway gates in D, though even ORD still has a gate or two with stairs
  10. Big Fun is an icon here in Cleveland Heights. Super store... Local and visitor favorite.
  11. Heck - the Heinen's Village Market in Hudson - 20,000 sq feet - is the perfect grocery store... Don't know why Heinen's doesn't just look at their own example.
  12. Airmail street pricing is very nice. Grabbing a Coke, etc... prior to flight costs the same $1.79, etc as local convenience store. At ORD, CLT, etch... that drink is $3.50 or more...
  13. Pugh - worse than CAK advertising, to me, is the PIT advertising on TV and on airport-near billboards.... PIT - despite no longer being a hub, has a nonstop to CDG/Paris... And that doesn't sit well with CLE travelers... me included.
  14. The narrow/low ceilinged C (United) concourse at CLE isn't terribly different than, say, E-F at O'Hare - or perhaps the less grand/older concourses at SFO, BWI, CLT, LAX, IAH, etc... The D concourse - which services only regional jets/props - is actually the newest, nicest/most like "new" airports - with higher ceilings and some nice food choices... And C-D are connected via an "O'Hare lite" tunnel - like between B-C at ORD. Concourses B is OK... and A is an underused afterthought. What CLE lacks is any grand or tall space - or any sense of "big airport"... And the customs area is detached and Third World.. But they really have done a good job of upgrading the airport, to the ability they can, with the Airmail addition, stores, restaurants, and all that.. When United gets HDTV monitors at each gate, like at other hubs, I'll actually believe they are staying... Until then, it's 90s orange LED signs.. At the same time, as a frequent flyer from CLE, it's a great place to travel to/from as a native. I don't know that I'd want to spend hours at CLE - but for 30-45 mins pre-flight, for grabbing a bag post-flight and for no (relative) hassle or fuss - with fairly significant levels of non-stops, all things considered, it's a great home airport. Can't think of a lower hassle one with service this decent... Rental car facility is OK - but not a garage - it's a canopied (if you're lucky) car area, with a mini-SEA main rental car building... Shame the airport can't easily accommodate simultaneous landings or takeoffs due to runway spacing... - even though wouldn't often be needed. This means one landing at a time, etch... with occasionally vectoring into CLE - sometimes by flying past the airport nearly to PA, or so it seems, then back... with plenty of planes in front/behind doing the same.
  15. Michael Symon (in just-online Cleveland.com article) notes he has two "restaurant projects" for CLE, including "taking over a legdendary dining spot" (he doesn't necessarily say "restaurant spot"). The Silver Grille is legendary... Would New York Spaghetti House count? Others?
  16. I thought of Sergio's - and came back to site and good to see others had same idea. There is no second choice.
  17. I found this interesting tidbit about Jonathon Sawyer's upcoming Trentina... The website no longer seems active, so I can't read the whole story - but the few sentences noted in the Google search I found from October are intriguing... It's previously been confirmed that the Trentina space is on the east side (suburbs, I believe - and likely near enough to Cle Heights). But the quote below specifically notes the space as a "beloved space, a small space"... When you note something as "beloved" - it would seem to be a clue that might help narrow things (that is, unless it's beloved only to him - but that's not how I'm taking it...) What vacant east side "beloved" space could he be talking about? canopi.com/content/2013/10/15/partners-in-crime/‎ Oct 15, 2013 - "We are opening Trentina in a beloved space, a small space, and we don't need much beyond the personal loan we are taking out."
  18. El Carnicero has a very similar menu to Momocho, but is half as good. I will stick with Momocho.
  19. REI... Very interesting news. NEO is the 2nd largest market in country (after Miami) without an REI open or announced.. Two have been announced in Columbus for opening in next year or so. Interesting Fairlawn might be the 1st in NEO, but since Stark Enterprises owns the strip where you note this is going, it would seem possible that Stark-owned Eton and Crocker (if Dick's doesn't have contractual exclusivity) might have REI locations when expansions are complete there, giving the larger NEO market 3 locations to serve consumers.
  20. The story alludes to Columbus being one of the largest markets without an REI... The two largest metro markets remaining without an REI open or announced are Miami (#11) and Cleveland/Akron/Canton (#16).. Columbus is #30 in metro population - so two stores is unusual.
  21. So.... do inner ring liberals actually LIKE being held up at gunpoint in diner parking lots? Or jumped and beaten coming home from the library...? Or robbed of their iPhone or computer on the way home from school, in broad daylight? And when they do - how do they describe the culprits --- as old, white ladies? Well, that's the way it sounds - since suburban conservatives are being called out as alarmist, scared, racist whiners who are making something of nothing... I don't live in an inner-ring suburb... I know little about Cleveland Heights past policies - or the apparent hatred of the police for their ticket focus.. What I DO know, plain and simple, is that when I go for dinner and a movie on Lee, or my wife goes to pick up a few gifts on Coventry, or when my teen daughter goes alone to dance lessons near Cain Park - we shouldn't have to worry about one of us getting a gun stuck in our backs by culprits of all-to-similar backgrounds... I don't think that's too much to ask... And while we've not curtailed our trips to the area, I DO think that being concerned/wary is legit... This shouldn't be happening in Cleveland Heights! If Cleveland.com chooses to report these stories (and coverups) - and, in turn, we're all better off for it.. so be it.. It's unfortunate that some are taking those reports - and the sameness of the suspects - offensively... - or finding it an opportunity to bash those who don't share the same political views or urban lifestyle... (not sure what either of those matters...)
  22. Menu for just opened Jack Flaps breakfast joint from Morocco's Eric Williams - in Ohio City. Looks tasty, but Interesting, not a single egg/omelet type dish other than egg side, which I would say is unusual for a breakfast spot. We carb watchers will have to save for special occasions...!! http://jack-flaps.com/menu.html
  23. The 1,900 seat concert space - which sounded impressive - appears to be nothing more than a ballroom that is configured for concerts. The concert setup I saw/they discussed on TV looked liked nothing more than a portable stage at one end of rectangular room - with folding chairs set up about 50 across on one level. Reminded me of the setup of the tent amphitheater at Tower City a few years back... Lame vs the "theater" I had thought they'd built.
  24. I'm not saying that lack of on-site parking is commonplace in downtown CLE hotels - but in recent and upcoming stays (with a car) in downtowns like SFO, NYC, ORD - the option has been either mandatory valet - or find your own self-park - usually several blocks away, just like this will be...
  25. Last word on street was that Uptown was out for Trentina, I thought... Somewhere on east side was last rumor - but things may have changed
