  5. There's a map available at the following link: http://www.akronmarathon.org/map.asp The map is for the annual Roadrunner Marathon. I believe the Olympic trials route would be roughly the same.

  7. ^ I agree Ewoops... though the potential impact could be great, it's just that... potential. I'm kind of torn on this one, I'm intrigued by the impact in could have economically and psychologically on the region; but at the same time I'm a little skeptical about spending $$$$ on adding a dome that may not bring the back the return investment as initially thought. Also, I wonder what it would look like; I suppose similar to the one in KC?
  8. From the Akron Beacon Journal 02/15/2006 Ohio primes pump for plant State promises to put up $2 million in an effort to attract $1 billion experimental coal generator that doesn't pollute By Bob Downing Beacon Journal staff writer Ohio officials have pledged $2 million to help the state get a nearly $1 billion experimental, nonpolluting coal-burning electric power plant. The $2 million will be used to fund test drilling as a critical step to attract the project to Ohio, Gov. Bob Taft, Senate President Bill Harris and House Speaker Jon Husted said Tuesday. The drilling will document geologic characteristics of proposed sites, to help find the best location for the FutureGen plant. About 20 states have expressed interest in the prototype plant, which is being developed by the U.S. Department of Energy and a nonprofit group of electric utilities and coal producers, including Columbus-based American Electric Power. Half of the $2 million will come from Ohio's general fund and the rest from the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority, the Ohio Coal Development Office, private sources and research-and-development funds. The drilling will help determine whether Ohio sites have suitable underground geology. MORE: http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/news/13876170.htm[/i]
  9. From the Akron Beacon Journal 02/15/2006 U.S. track delegation tours Akron courses Committee seeks site for 2008 Olympic Marathon TrialsBy Paula Schleis Beacon Journal staff writer New York has a lot to offer. As do Boston and Minneapolis. So in a pitch Tuesday to become one of two cities to host the 2008 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, Akron race organizers argued that the event here would be a star attraction whereas in the other larger cities it would get lost among many other activities. ... http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/13876222.htm[/i]

^ I detest Action 19 News... I just can't stand the way they like to report the news. It drives me crazy how loosely they like to use the term "thugs" and "punks". Just seems so phony. Back on topic.... Great to see some many different churches and donominations of churches coming together for one big praise session. Wish I could've been there.
  13. Forgot to post this a few weeks ago. There's a story about it on NewsNet5.com today. Akron Among Final 4 In Running For Olympic Marathon Trials Olympic Committee To Make Selection In April POSTED: 7:24 pm EST February 14, 2006 AKRON, Ohio -- Olympic officials were in Akron Tuesday, which is one of the final four cities in the running to hold the U.S. marathon trials for the 2008 Olympics. Akron is competing with some heavyweight cities to hold the trials, and not being a huge city may be in its favor, reported NewsChannel5's Jonathan Costen. ... http://www.newsnet5.com/news/7057652/detail.html
  14. From NewsNet5.com - 2/14/2006 Developer Hopes To Raise $90M For Stadium Dome Councilman Says Building Roofless Stadium Was Mistake POSTED: 6:28 pm EST February 14, 2006 CLEVELAND -- A local developer is leading the efforts in raising the $90 million it would cost to put a dome on Cleveland Browns Stadium, reported 5 On Your Side's Tony Gaskins. City Councilman Mike Polensik and developer Bob Corna outlined their proposal Tuesday to the listeners of the Mike Trivisono Show on WTAM. The plan would cap the stadium with a state-of-the-art retractable roof. "If you look 10 years out and look at the picture, what we're talking about is quite simply, what can you draw with a stadium like that? Well, No. 1 is the Super Bowl," said Corna. Corna said the money could be raised by continuing the tax on cigarettes and alcohol that built Gateway, and also by getting political and civic leaders involved, an essential step in redeveloping the lakefront. 16. My dad is from Columbus, my mom from Massillon. They met each other at Central State in the 60's, my mom then got offered a teaching job in Akron in '68.... my dad then followed her here and that's where they settled. I have a few cousins who have since moved to Akron and some distant relatives who live here as well; however, the bulk of my extended family still resides in Stark County and Columbus.

Although the design is definantly different, I can't say I like it. I'd do anything to have a some tall scrapers' built in Akron, but I'd cringe if something like this was built here. IMHO.... YUCK!!!

    KJP, that's excellent news!
  19. ^ I saw a picture a while ago of land being cleared for I-90 on the west side. Almost makes you want to cringe when you see all that was lost. I wish there would have been more people at that time that had the forsight to see the detrimental effects routing freeways through the heart of urban cores would eventually have.

I believe he's originally from Tennessee and grew up in Atlanta. I heard a while ago he had gotten a penthouse in DT Cleveland after becoming part owner last year; but I don't know how true that it is. It does make you wonder, he's been very absent from games this year. Last spring, he was at almost every home game. Could be nothing though.

Man, glad to see I'm not the only one that got a little excited about this storm. I was a little bummed earlier when the Akron area was downgraded to a winter weather advisory. I've always loved storms, whether it be a winter storm or a severe summer afternoon storm; seeing how we haven't had much snow this year, I was kind of looking forward to waking up on Sunday and looking at 7 or 8 inches of snow.
  22. Everytime I read about the proposed freeways through the eastern suburbs, it still never ceases to amaze me how stupid of an idea ever got legs to run on. Let's just be thankful that this idea was able to be shot down. Major props to the Sun for getting the word out at that time, that would be hideous to have look at all those senseless freeways running through some of Cleveland's best suburbs.

Was Usher Ushered Out by Cavaliers? Friday, February 3, 2006 7:32 PM EST The Associated Press By TOM WITHERS CLEVELAND (AP) — Has Usher been shown the door by the Cleveland Cavaliers? The Grammy-winning R&B artist, who said "I look for Cleveland to be my home away from home" when he became a minority owner last year, has not attended a Cavaliers home game this season. On top of that, his hit song "Yeah" is no longer blasted inside Quicken Loans Arena, and perhaps more telling, Usher does not appear in the club's media guide along with principal owners Dan Gilbert, Gordon Gund and David Katzman... www.ap.com

Ahh... Shaker Square, currently my favorite Cleveland neighborhood. My wife and I will be moving in about a year and are looking at Cleveland Hts, Shaker Hts, and Shaker Square. I'm really leaning toward Shaker Square, I love the urban fabric of that neighborhood.
