  1. ^ I am thouroghly sick to death with these people. It's a frickin bus stop that will only be in use during the morning and evening rush hours.
  2. I'm glad to see an organized effort is being made to ensure that the neighborhood retains it's urban feel.

The Browns get absolutely no respect. I've seen the Texans play a couple of times this year; the Brownies can definately beat these guys. They've just gotta find a way to generate some offense; the O is looking worse and worse each week while the defense seems to be improving each week.

From the Akron Beacon Journal 10/20/2005 Disasters aren't bad for Big Oil By David Giffels Well, apparently all those reports of raping and pillaging in the wake of the hurricanes were correct. The major oil companies are about to tally up profits big enough to choke Fat Tuesday. David Giffels' column appears Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. From the Akron Beacon Journal 10/19/2005 Windfalls in wake of hurricanes Oil industry expected to reveal staggering third-quarter profits By Steve Quinn Associated Press DALLAS - Offshore oil platforms were destroyed, refineries were flooded and gas stations were sporadically out of fuel. Although Hurricanes Katrina and Rita created compounding headaches for energy companies late this summer, the storms ultimately benefited them because, as supplies tightened, prices for gasoline, diesel and jet-fuel soared. Exactly how much money was made will become clearer next week, when the industry begins to detail its third-quarter performance, though analysts are expecting huge profits. http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/business/12939542.htm

  7. ^ Agreed. I'm happy see that their selling the assetts of the region versus offering a boat load of tax incentives. I really have a good feeling about this (plus Ovshinsky is an Akron native an seems to be truely interested in bringing jobs back to his hometown).

I used to travel to Medina a lot for business a few years ago. It's almost like being in two different towns; you've got the older parts of Medina centered around the town square (which I absolutely love!), but then you go up a few blocks and you right smack in the middle of sprawlburg.

Yeah, maybe Modell's boys will self destruct again like they did against Detroit (21 penalaties, that's insane! :-o).

Based on my location, I'm forced to drive to work everyday. I would love to catch the NorthCoast Express (METRO bus that runs between Akron and Cleveland), but it would take me no where near my job and the additional transfers needed to get to my job wouldn't be worth it time wise.

I actually forgot we had a team here in Akron, they get no attention by the local press (LeBron dominates all basketball related stories around here); I think they play in the gymnasium at Stow H.S. I didn't even know the Falls had a team.

From CNN.com 10/06/2005 Gasoline surge leads to pedal power Group expects sale of 20 million bicycles this year, approaching record years set in early 1970s. October 6, 2005: 6:32 AM EDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - A spike in gasoline prices is fueling what could be the biggest year for U.S. bicycle sales since the Arab oil embargoes more than three decades ago, a leading bike association says. "For bicycles, high gasoline prices are a good thing," said Tim Blumenthal, executive director of Bikes Belong, a national coalition of bicycle suppliers and retailers. http://money.cnn.com/2005/10/06/news/funny/bicycles.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes

  18. That's a scary thought; however, call it optimism, but I think things will turn before the population shrinks to these levels. The simplest argument for regionalism. I couldn't agree more.

They used these as a loop in downtown Akron a few years ago; however, ridership was very low so they now use them as a loop between Summit Mall and the Motrose shopping area in Fairlawn. ^Agreed. They don't even fool my 3 year old son; whenever we see one I tell him "there's a trolley" and he promptly replies "that's a bus daddy". I do like them though, I always thought they looked pretty cool. ^Agree as well.

From the City of Akron: IT'S UP TO DOWNTOWN TRAIL WILL SOON REACH HEART OF CITY The City of Akron today broke ground for a 5,000 foot extension of the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath Trail that will be the most difficult and expensive mile of the hike-and-bikeway along the 101 mile corridor. "Today we bring the Towpath directly into Downtown," said Mayor Don Plusquellic. "By next summer, a bike rider will be able to get on the Towpath Trail in Downtown Akron and ride all the way to the doorstep of Cleveland." The section between the valley floor of the Little Cuyahoga River at North Street, and Martin Luther King Boulevard is the steepest section of the canal’s 300 mile length, and it will parallel locks 10 to 15 which were built back-to-back to accommodate the 80-foot rise in grade over 1/4 mile. The land is owned by the City of Akron, and operated in conjunction with the non-profit Cascade Locks Park Association. The partnership that assembled the plan for the trail extension includes: the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, which assisted in obtaining a $250,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to help pay for the trail extension; Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, which maintains the towpath through Cascade Locks Park; and the National Park Service. "This section represents the centerpiece of the entire canal towpath," said Dan Rice, president and CEO of the Ohio & Erie Canal Way Coalition, "Just as the canal itself catapulted Akron into an era of industrial leadership in the 19th century, the towpath today continues to stimulate economic development." As an example, Rice pointed to the development of two new housing developments at Northside and on Hickory -- both nearby. The trail will be constructed by Akron’s Cavanaugh Building Corporation -- a 10-foot wide, ADA-accessible asphalt path with a crushed limestone berm. New concrete and brick sidewalks will be constructed along Beech Street to carry hikers and bikers to Martin Luther King Blvd. A subsequent Phase Two will construct a bikeway connection. A 29-car, lighted trailhead parking lot will be constructed on North Street opposite Mustill House & Store. The $4.1 million project also includes funding ($500,000) from the Clean Ohio Trails Fund. http://ci.akron.oh.us/News_Releases/2005/0916.html Mark Williamson ([email protected])

Bengals puttin a beat down on my Brownies; it's gonna be a long season. :-( However, I do expect the Browns to improve as the season continues; hell any improvement from last season will be greatly appreciated hear in Dawg-Pound country. I saw OU on ESPN2. I was shocked at how alive that stadium was; I've never seen that excitement at one of their games. I'm still shocked at how bad Pitt looks this year. Gettin stomped on by ND is one thing; but then gettin stomped on by a MAC team, that's gotta hurt their pride a little.

I currently live in the Merriman Valley neigborhood of Akron. I reside in a decent sized 3 bedroom apartment; 3 levels, family room and living room, 2 car garage, overlooking the valley. I yearn for my own house, but this will do for now. :-D
  24. Absolutely stunning! Nicely done Monte!
