Terry Pluto to join the Plain Dealer
^ I would assume the sale played a part in his move as well. The future seems kinda cloudy for the Beacon, so I can't say I blame him. I hate to see him leaving my hometown paper, but I'm glad to see he'll be following me up the Cleve! :-D

Akron: UA Infocision Stadium
I'm kinda torn on this one. I recently was down at the Crowne Plaze at Quaker Square and all I could think was, "this is going to be turned into dorms?" I really wish they could have picked another location seeing how unique Quaker Square is; but hey, it's business. In all honesty, Akron more than likely won't miss the hotel all that much; from what I've heard occupancy rates have been pretty low between the Crowne Plaza and the Radisson. But the place is so unique, I just hate the thought of it being converted into dorms.

Damn, what a blow for the Beacon. Great news for the PD though, I love Pluto's columns.

Akron: UA Infocision Stadium
zipsrifle, I agree. My dad worked for the U of A till he retired, so I spent a lot of my childhood on that campus and came away with the impression of that was what all college campuses looked like. It wasn't until I started looking at colleges and visiting other campuses that I realized how stark and bleak Akron's campus was. I was last enrolled at the U of A in 2001 and they were just starting to do a lot of the revitalizations; they had just started working on the new student center. Now, 6 years later I can barely recognize the place, and that's a good thing. They've created a more of a college atmoshere on an urban campus; that atmosphere is what Akron had been lacking for a long time. Now adding that atmosphere to the much improved football program will make quite a difference for the campus community. Exciting times for the U of A indeed!

Akron: Random Development and News
From the Akron Beacon Journal - 7/24/2007 Council considers UA condo project Beacon Journal staff report Akron City Council on Monday had a public hearing on a contract with the developer for a 25-unit town home condominium project near the University of Akron. The project is planned for the northeast corner of Brown and Power streets, just south of East Exchange Street. The council will consider the bill at next Monday's meeting. The town homes would range from one to three-bedrooms with 1,820 to 2,900 square feet, and would be priced at about $200,000, not counting upgrades. The town homes would feature rooftop decks for patios and gardens. Two-car garages would open into a courtyard. The city is acquiring property to extend Kirn Street from Crouse Street to Power Street. The city also would create a pedestrian walkway fronting the north row of condominiums, eliminate Gray and Emmet courts and provide street, water and sewer improvements. The developers -- ASW Spicer Village LLC and 473 Brown Street LLC -- hope to attract young professionals employed downtown or at the University of Akron who want to walk to work. http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/17534093.htm

Akron: UA Infocision Stadium
From the Akron Beacon Journal - 7/24/2007 University officials may face hurdles in getting land to build proposed football stadium Local business owners don't fear the 'Roo By Carol Biliczky Beacon Journal staff writer As University of Akron officials ready plans for a new stadium, they may face hurdles -- not the least of which may be a stout Lebanese businessman. Manuel Nemer, 55, says he will dig in his heels to stop UA from taking his commercial property on East Exchange Street. http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/17534046.htm

Walkable Communities
^ I agree. I was surprised the Copley got that high of a score. The only places I can easily walk to currently are the Circle K and Rizzi's Pizza located up the street. Anywhere else requires a car or some very good walking shoes... blah :-P

Thank you KC for FINALLY coming to Cleveland, you made her look absolutely stunning. I love looking at your threads on SSP. Great work!- Akron: UA Infocision Stadium
What are those buildings going to be surrounding the stadium in that picture. Are those going to be additional dorms?- Akron: UA Infocision Stadium
Wow, very nice; a big improvement from the Rubber Bowl . I remember when I played football in high school and I was so excited about playing in the Rubber Bowl before the game. My dad worked for the UofA and told me the place was crap, but I was still pumped about playing in a D-1A college stadium. I wasn't that impressed after playing there a few more times over the next couple of years (it's like a dungeon down towards the locker room area), it's way over due for something new and much closer to campus. Can't wait to see it done and completed. UofA really has come a long way in the past decade.- Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
The letter was harsh but oh so necessary for this young man. They had Polensek and the kids mom on Fox 8 yesterday morning verbally duking it out. I've read the letter several times and didn't sense any hint of racism, and I'm African-American myself. That one got me fired up, there is no reason to pull the race card in this situation; her son is a knuckle-head who is contributing to the decline of this city, that's all there is to it. His tone was a little strong, yet I applaud his effort and hope it empowers others to start to stand up and take more pride in their neighborhoods and have a greater awareness of things happening in their neighborhoods.- Where did you find Urbanohio????
I was looking for pics of Akron and did a google search and presto, I found heaven... I mean Urban Ohio. And thus my addiction began.- Florida Guy's Spring Visit - Cleveland
Wow... those sunset shots are gorgeous. Great pics all together!- Old Gas Station Photos
Nice... some of those old stations were pretty stylish. Much better than today's standard pre-fab stations.- What got you so damn interested in cities in the first place?
Wow, before reading some of these post on here, I used to think my brother and I were had some screws lose growing up. We used to create huge cities in our basement using anything we could find that was stackable. We'd stack the boxes to make skyscrapers and apartment buildings, use some mega sized boxes for the convo center and an arena. We used spare parts from race track sets to build highways. I even went as for as to build a baseball stadium for our city using our erector set and some dominos (it was pretty cool!!). It used to drive our dad nuts, he would come downstairs and half the basement would be taken over by our mega city. Ah, the memories.- Age

Damn, no winners on that list.- Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
Curosity led me over to Steelyard Commons for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't sure what to expect, though I must say I was pleasently surprised. Though it still resembles your typical suburban shopping center, I love the added touches with the steel bridge over the road and the other pieces of art using steel throughout the complex. I've never really been down by the steelmills before, so that was also neat; I didn't realize that SC was so close to some of the actual mills.- Flat Earth Society - They believe the Earth is Flat
