Akron: Spicer Village
From the Akron Beacon Journal 4/26/2006 Projects blossom in area near UA Developments spring up in University Park zone targeted for improvement By Betty Lin-Fisher Beacon Journal business writer More than five years ago, when University of Akron President Luis Proenza started to look at the area surrounding the university, he didn't like what he saw in the blighted neighborhoods where students were living. Today, the 40-block area around the University of Akron, often referred to as University Park, is beginning to bustle with activity and real estate projects. Work includes construction on the university campus, at nearby Summa Health System and Spicer Village -- a planned $32 million retail and upscale housing development on East Exchange Street that should break ground later this summer. University students and staff, community organizations and residents have become involved with the University Park Alliance, created in 2001 to revitalize the 700-acre area. Read More...

NE Ohio: MLS stadium
From the Akron Beacon Journal 4/25/2006 Nordonia board OKs soccer deal Schools could get up to $8.5 million from stadium plan By Mary Kay Quinn Beacon Journal staff writer NORTHFIELD - The Nordonia Hills Board of Education on Monday approved an agreement with a stadium developer that could make the schools up to $8.5 million richer by the end of the year. That all depends on whether the developer, Wolstein Sports & Entertainment Group, is successful in the next several steps it must take. The board, by a 5-0 vote, accepted a compensation package in exchange for giving Wolstein Sports 100 percent property tax exemptions for as long as 30 years. Wolstein Sports has proposed a Major League Soccer stadium, youth fields and a shopping center off state Route 8 in Northfield Center Township and Macedonia. It has options on 240 acres of mostly vacant land. http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/14422369.htm

Akron Among Final 4 In Running For Olympic Marathon Trials
Oh well, looks like our long shot chance may be slipping away. From the Akron Beacon Journal 4/25/2006 Akron tries to keep up pace in bid for qualifier Report says other cities to score Olympic trials By Paula Schleis Beacon Journal staff writer Akron's chances for hosting a U.S. marathon trial for the 2008 Olympics may be dimming. Citing unnamed sources, a recent report in the Boston Globesaid Boston was the front-runner to host the women's qualifying event and New York was the first choice for the men's race. But USA Track & Field and the U.S. Olympic Committee are reportedly at odds over sponsorship issues, delaying a planned mid-April announcement. ... http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/14422348.htm[/i]

Wooster is one of my favorite small towns. Medina is also very nice, particularly the area around the Town Square.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
And the national media wondered how LeBron would handle his first playoff game... HA!!!.. just another day at the office for the King. A triple double in his first playoff game, incredible!!! I know every game won't be as easy as this one was, but it sure was sweet to watch. I wish I could've have been there, the crowd at the Q was absolutely electric.

Ohio's tallest
I've seen that design before, I personally don't like it. The thing I love about Key is that it really stands out as the tallest scraper; the alternate design just doesn't have that same *pop*.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
This was posted on ESPN.com about the new jersey's and the Buckeye nations' disdain for them.... From ESPN.com 4/12/2006 Buckeyes fans uniformly disdain jersey changes ESPN.com news services Ohio State football fans are seeing red this week, thanks to a slight change in the school's football uniforms. The school introduced a new uniform that features slightly different stripes on the sleeves and changes the pattern (to scarlet-white-black from scarlet-white-black-gray). The sleeve is also slightly longer. Reaction has been swift and strong, according to Wednesday's Columbus Dispatch, which said that it received 734 votes in a poll on its Web site, topping the prevous record of 433 for a question on same-sex marriage (and more than the usual 100-200 responses). The newspaper said 79 percent of fans responding were against the new uniform. "I can't believe this is happening. I can't even concentrate on typing this message because I'm so angry," one fan wrote into the newspaper. Another compared the change to "New Coke." Full story at http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2406332 Also from www.ESPN.com Uni Watch Analysis If your official school colors are scarlet and gray, shouldn't those colors be on your uniform? The folks at Ohio State apparently didn't get that memo, at least judging by their new jersey. Like, if they want to change the width or spacing of the sleeve stripes, that's fine, but why get rid of the gray? Yes, the jerseys were gray-less for a while back in the 1950s, but so what? Those jerseys were also made out of cotton, didn't have the players' names on the back, and didn't have the OSU logo on the collar, and you don't hear anyone talking about going back to those design features.

Akron: Random Development and News
Part of the Akron Public Schools construction projects. Groundbreaking for this school (or community learning center, as they like to call them) was a while ago (I believe in August of '05). Glad to see they are finally moving along with construction; this neigborhood has lacked an elementry school for years (one of the main reasons my parents sent me and my siblings to private school versus busing us across town to go to another public school). From the Akron Beacon Journal 4/11/2006 New school goes forward Akron neighborhood will get long-awaited Helen Arnold primary By Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writer Many in the Lane Field neighborhood noticed the continued emptiness of the land and worried. Some whispered that perhaps the promised elementary school in a neighborhood that has been without one for more than two decades wouldn't be built. For them, hearing that the Akron school board awarded contracts Monday for construction of the Helen Arnold Community Learning Center will be a relief. Mega-suburb takes shape in Utah
Not what I was expecting when I saw "Mega-suburb" in the thread title. Sounds like it will be nice, too bad we can't get more developments like this instead of the common subdivisions which are almost completed isolated from the rest of the community.

Downtown Dayton
Whoa.... I missed this one. As many times as I've been to Xenia over the years, I've never been to Dayton. I'll have to make a point to go scrounge around a little bit when I'm in Xenia this year (and maybe Cincy too as I've never been their either).
