You know... the way they've been playing as of late, I'm really starting to think the may actually be able to make some real noise in the playoffs. They almost seem like a different team as of late, like a bonafied playoff team. Damn, I can't wait... I may need to dip into my funds and get some playoff tix.

Looks like Dan Gilbert's trying to replace the Barons. Today from NewsNet5.com AHL To Vote On Hockey Team's Potential Move To Cleveland Team Likely Would Not Start Playing Until 2007-2008 Season POSTED: 2:08 pm EST March 30, 2006 CLEVELAND -- Hockey may soon come back to Cleveland, thanks to Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. The AHL will vote on Tuesday on whether to approve the sale of the Utah Grizzlies to Gilbert, who would move the currently dormant franchise to the north coast, NewsChannel5 reported. The team would replace the Cleveland Barons, which is moving to Massachusetts after this season. The Barons are affiliated with the San Jose Sharks. If approved, the franchise would likely not start playing until the 2007-2008 season, giving Gilbert a chance to build the team's infrastructure and to sort through affiliation options. http://www.newsnet5.com/sports/8363815/detail.html

Anyone else starting to bubble up with excitement?? :-D.... Through all to complaining about this and that we've done this year about the Cavs, their magic number is down to 3 wins in order make the playoffs... the playoffs for the first time since 19-frickin-98!!! Though I don't expect them to go too far this year, I'm just happy to see that they're finally going to make it. I hope they'll surprise me and make it out the first round; they've tended to play skittish this season when playing quality teams and the game becomes tight, I don't think that will go over too well for them in the playoffs. But like I said, maybe they'll surprise me; either way, I'll actually excited about saying wait till next year (assuming they'll be even better of course).

University Ave. was once the main street running through the middle of campus; it was closed to traffic in the early 90's. Recently, they closed off parts of Union St. and Carroll Ave. In Cuyahoga Falls, a portion of Front St. was closed to vehicular traffic. The city's new skating rink is now located nearby.
  8. Wow, what a beautiful area... reminds me somewhat of Shaker Hts. in Cleveland. Some older burbs (pre WWII) are absolutely stunning and beautiful and have something the post-war burbs often lack... character. Great pics!
  9. I forgot a few for Akron... - First Night Akron (New Year's Eve) - The West Side parade (not downtown; runs down Copley Rd, usually in August) - African-American Festival (off of Vernom Odom Blvd.)
  10. Akron: - 4th of July Rib Cookoff and fireworks - Summer concert series at Lock 3 Park - Akron Aeros games - The Welcome Santa parade - Holiday Fest at Lock 3 Park (Chriskindl Market & Ice Skating rink) - The Road Runner Marathon
  11. ^ Agreed. I used to walk from the main campus to the Polsky Building downtown and back all the time, it's not that far. I love all the changes being made on the U of A campus. It's looks so different now from the how it looked when I attended. It's still very much an urban campus, yet it feels much more like a "college campus" now; the campus seemed very bland when I attended.

I definantly think this will have an effect on people's desire to move to exurbia. However, we'll just have to wait and see how much of an impact it will have. I like to think that this will make some people reconsider their lifestyles and decide upon a more sensible, urban lifestyle; however, I can imangine people desparately clinging onto the lifestyles they've become accustomed to, regardless of the price of gasoline.

Thanks for posting KJP. A sad yet excellent ananlysis of how this trend continues on a daily basis. Even with all the great in-fill projects being added to the urban cores of our cities, there just isn't enough of a wave of people coming back into the cities to stop the heavy bleeding a people leaving. It's a sad cycle and unfortunately, most people don't see or realize the great strain that it puts on a regions infastructure when the metro area continues to expand. It just boggles my mind looking at how stagnant the population is in the Cleveland-Akron area, yet there is tons of new housing construction located between the two cities. It's really depressing to think about what will be left of our cities if this trend does not slow, and unfortunately, there is no forseeable end of the trend that I can see.
  14. ^ I agree, some of those areas are pretty rough; especially around Cuyahoga St. and W. Tallmadge Ave. I assumed you were referring to this area; however, I just wanted to be sure. I live close to the Cuyohaga Valley in another neigborhood, just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have to start looking up crime stats for my area...
  15. ^ I can speak from experience on this locale; I remember looking for a client's house who lived in Cleveland Hts. off of Taylor Road. Not being familiar with the area at that time, I drove right into this area. Not a real inviting neighborhood. ^ Some areas around Arlington are pretty rough; though, I've been to the area so many times, I really don't feel concerned around there. I remember when me and a co-worker went canvassing in this area; he probably thought I was crazy for dragging him over there. He didn't say anything in particular, but he kept coming up with various reasons why we should head for another 'hood; again, being that I'm familiar with the area it never really phased me. Some of the areas around Copley Rd are definantly problematic. The areas around Diagonal, Hawkins and Vernom Odom Blvd are a little dicey as well; there have been several homicides in this area in the past year, and just recently, a body was found off of Hawkins. bizbiz, what area are you referring to near the CVNP?....
  16. MayDay layin the smack down!!!
  17. Move. Property owners usually have to pay for the portion of sidewalk in front of their houses, so good luck getting them put in. We're moving in about a year, so I probably won't take any action. I thought about complaining a few months back before we decided we would move, but again, it probably wouldn't have made a difference. I never realized how much I'd miss sidewalks. We lived in Copley Township just west of Akron previously; though we didn't have sidewalks, I didn't mind as much because there was no where to walk to. Where we lived now, there are actually areas I would like to be able to walk to; a large metro park, bike trails, restaraunts, shops, yet the most convenient way to get there is by driving - yuck :-P. Hell, Metro even yanked away the bus stop that was nearby (result of budget cutbacks). Oh well, I'm done ranting about it; I'm just looking forward to our move next year where we'll be in a more walkable neighborhood, close to the Rapids, etc, etc...

^ Wow, bluntly tells the story... Great pics Y-City.
  20. ^ I'm familiar with that area. As developed as that area has become, it's a shame that there aren't sidewalks all the way down the street. But who walks anymore???... Everyone drives now; there's no need for sidewalks
  21. ^ I crack a big smile everday when I pass by the completed Metro Park-n-Ride. The NIMBY complaints against this ranged from fear of crime (this park-n-ride is only for buses taking commuters to DT Cleveland during morning and evening rush hours; I'm sure the gangsters and drug dealers couldn't wait to go out to Bath to open up shop in the parking lot :shoot:) and environmental concerns. I can't stand how many neighborhoods are built without sidewalks now-a-days. My neighborhood is a prime example; a portion of the neigborhood is actually pretty well connected with sidewalks and bike trails. My parents live in the same neighborhood and there is an abundance of sidewalks nearby; they walk everywhere. I, on the other hand, live in a part of the neighborhood where there are no sidewalks. So even though there is a decent amount of retail development and restaraunts in my neighborhood, I really don't have a way of justing walking around. I could walk down the hill on the side of the road, but most days I'm toting my son along so I really prefer not to walk with him when there is no sidewalk. It's a real bummer, I hate driving; I drive 80 miles round trip everyday to go to work. It sucks that I can't conveniently walk around my neighborhood. I've considered complaining to my city councilman to see if one could be built on at least on side of the road. I don't know how much luck I'd have; though it's worth a try.
  22. ^ I'm glad to hear they will be rebuilt too. At least construction hadn't progressed too far on this phase; so the loss is not as substantial as it could have been.
  23. Anyone know more about these townhomes? I could see the smoke from the fire all the way from I-271. From NewsNet5.com Flames Engulf Several New Homes On West Side Nobody Injured In Blaze CLEVELAND -- A fire broke out at an under-construction housing development on the city's west side, engulfing several of the new homes in flames. The fire broke out around 5 p.m. Thursday. The townhouses are located at West 53rd Street and Walworth Avenue, just south of Interstate 90. Within minutes, the flames spread out, engulfing the entire row of houses in flames. Firefighters at the scene were able to contain the flames quickly, and eventually put the fire out. Although they had to contend with wind during their battle, the winds from the north also protected another row of homes from catching fire. Firefighters were also able to keep the flames from spreading to a nearby factory. http://www.newsnet5.com/news/8068448/detail.html
  24. ^ That would explain the slight resemblence... yikes!
  25. EASTSIDE!!! My family's hood. Columbus has some real gems over there just ripe for restoration. Great pics ColDay!
