Akron: Random Development and News
^I'm not sure that west point is finished with their layout. I think they are slowly adding departments. If I'm wrong, then yea its lame. I would expect a flow to it. This is just putting out their best high margin items with cheese and alcohol.

^^^Yes skylift from westside market to scranton to tower city would crush it. An apartment tower or 2 with views of the lake would be amazing.

Reducing Surface Parking Lots - Tax Land, Not Buildings
^You might want to check out the youtube video that i posted to understand. This is one of the shortest threads on UO. Less than one page so far and i don't get why you are writing more in your own 3 postings than has been written in total.

Reducing Surface Parking Lots - Tax Land, Not Buildings
^^I'm calling BS that the constitution of Ohio expressly states that land tax is not allowed. Because it doesn't exclusively rule it out, i would say it is open to interpretation and therefore allowed. The focus of the Ohio constitution in terms of taxation was on land for agriculture and mining as well as preservation.

Reducing Surface Parking Lots - Tax Land, Not Buildings
Found this video on youtube explaining land tax concept. This seems like it should be an absolute necessity in all urban business districts.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I think that was my surmise as a spark plug weighs very little. Therefore it could be flown in bulk to many manufacturing locations throughout the world very easily.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
An update on the plasma spark plug thing. Somehow they are making progress with Ford. They must really want that location. I wonder if they are cutting a deal for Ford for future purchases of the spark plugs in order to gain access to the site. http://www.cleveland.com/brook-park/index.ssf/2017/07/brook_park_officials_ford_clos.html

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I think there are more people coming in to work in Cleveland from outside Cuyahoga county as in commuters. It would not surprise me that there are many new doctors and other medical people coming in from other states to work at CC. The service industry is a powerhouse in Cleveland. People are working multiple jobs. I know of several people that are working in Cleveland from the Akron area and some that have moved up to Cleveland. I would say an increasing rental price in Tremont and Ohio City would be indicators of an influx of people from Akron area. Perhaps also Beachwood for people who are working on the east-side.

Cleveland: Downtown: nuCLEus
I consider it just a project name. As that, i like it. I would think any particular building will be named something else.

Cleveland: Downtown: nuCLEus
Its a post card asking residents their views on nucleus. It has about 8 meetings on the flip side starting at the end of July. Kind of smart to target people already living downtown since it can be a sales pitch too.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
^i would agree. It really depends how they are prioritizing criteria in regards to available workforce, monetary incentives and/or tax relief from various communities, available buildings, and price per sq foot of buildings they are looking at. Other factors are expandability of location and perhaps security.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
The Ford plant speculation was unrealistic since Ford is not looking to lease or sell the land. I think the company was a little cavalier that they can just plot dates out and expect them to hit those dates. Location decision takes a lot of research due to all the factors involved. As the company spools up it will add engineers from LA and probably WV. Honestly, i wouldn't put the Akron-Canton area out of the running due to Stark state automotive dept and UOfA engineering as well as a plethora of buildings available that would meet their criteria. There are a lot of automotive and mechanical engineers employed by various tire companies in Akron area.

Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic News & Info
Just read it. I thought fair, but I'm in Summit county. It is disturbing that the whole east side of Cleveland in their graph has that high of diabetes and other diseases. I would think there would be more community gardens since the land is pretty cheap and many houses have been torn down. They could have their own farmers markets.

Cleveland: Which Project Will Be Next and Why
Is the casino phase 2 totally dead? I would think the 2 key projects for downtown besides the rejiggering of all the justice and county buildings is sherwin williams and the casino. Those are key investments in downtown. I hate to say a casino is an investment but i think the idea is phase 2 will cost like a half billion and i have to believe tie in transportation links which will be many $10s of millions more if the direction is heading up the Cuyahoga.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
^The State rep is Brenner i believe from Powell, Ohio. I was suspicious as well about it but since it isn't one of those cut and paste pieces from other states and they are still hammering through it and keeping an open mind seemingly, I thought it was interesting to explore.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
^^They talked about the bussing in hearings and they mentioned that most systems have contracted that out apparently and the sponser didn't feel that would have much affect on this bill. I didn't get that either. No mention was made of the sports facilities. But they said there were some things that needed fleshed out still.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
There is an intriguing plan coming forth out of the State House to resolve the school funding issue. It hasn't been totally been finalized but the bill sponser wants it to go to a general vote of the people. The plan essentially does a one-time forgiveness if you will on debt that all the school systems have. The state will take over the debt. The schools will then all have the same amount of tax dollars per pupil to spend. The idea is to take debt management out of the school systems. But also to save money on the interest that schools are paying. Then to level the playing field since communities are sending so much of their tax dollars from wealthy areas to poorer. A fixed amount of money will follow each student. They will also tack on additional funds if student has special needs. So perhaps $9000 per student and $11-20,000 for special needs based on some formula that would likely change a bit every year. The idea is that would incentivize the schools to better focus on the needs of the students since the schools will be trying to keep their students happy. I think this is so radical it might need a pilot program to see how this may be work or be abused.

US, Ohio construction cranes inventory
So the interesting question from the above graph is why are so many buildings being built in those locations? The answer to me is that the transportation systems are booming.
-
US, Ohio construction cranes inventory
Strange thead. But i like it!! I think there's at least 3 crane's in Akron. Stark tech, Akron Children's, and on the innerbelt/sewer project. There should be one going up soon across Rt 8 from the Stark Tech crane at the new Akron City hospital tower that is about to go up.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I wouldn't mind seeing him gone and probably most of the board that back him. It would be nice to have a proactively pro-TOD leader instead of a "we can't afford that" kind of leader.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I think the Cavs may be alright if they can get Derrick Williams to play up to his athletic ability. To me that means training camp and a lot of time finding minutes for him in the regular season. He has to see now what it takes for players on a championship team to stay at that level and the sacrifices they make. He has the exact physique to be able to guard Durant.

Cleveland: Downtown & Vicinity Residences Discussion
I would think with the skylift gondolas in the right spots that would help extend biking and walking in Cleveland. People at E&Y or whatever other new companies come in the E Flats could get to W25th area or edgewater or downtown in all weather with their bikes. And vice versa obviously. Once the other trails in the flats open and link to the rest of the towpath that would make Cleveland very bike and pedestrian-friendly.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Hung out in Canton a bit tonight. There were a couple big events going on in the main drag. Something like music thursdays in their main park downtown. I attended a beerfest at their civic center. Only thing i didn't like is Canton brewing closes at like 9pm at night. The new stadium at the NFL hof is looking impressive. The one side is mainly completed. Definitely not a city that should be thrown on a worst list.
