Akron: Downtown: Development and News
It sounds like with the pandemic as an excuse the expense of getting the building refitted to how they really want it was going to be much. They want half of their space to be for labs. I think they also want more of a mini campus or a more sprawling building. They will continue the search for a new building/complex in Akron

Ohio Ski Resorts
A lot of Canadians go to Holiday Valley as well. Since they are not coming across the border it has meant that Ellicottville is a bit emptier than usual. Also there are travel restrictions for people coming from Ohio. So Clevelanders are not coming in force like they normally would. There is nothing like the North Face at 7Springs at Holiday Valley either. That is a massive 750 vertical of skiing on 3 very wide slopes.

Another resort that is 5-6hrs of Ohio that has 1200ft of vertical is Bristol Mountain in the finger lakes in NY. Half the driving distance to Vermont. They have a couple of high speed quads.

^Pittsburgh has many options for ski resorts already. 7Springs is the main one people go to. Nearby to that is Hidden Valley also owned by 7Springs. If they want to go to ski over 1000 vertical they can ski at blue knob under 2 hours away. Timberline is over 3hrs away from Pittsburgh.

Ohio Ski Resorts
I would think if Spicy Run was a good location that the Perfect family that owns Perfect North would’ve bought that instead of Timberline in Davis, WV. Timberline is still 4-5 hours from all major Ohio population centers.

That doesn’t cut it for “resorts”. its great for mountain biking though. Or minor backcountry skiing after a storm.

Researched Athens county’s highest and lowest points. 719 ft and 538ft. They cannot have a resort in Athens that would be profitable at 180’. That assumes one can have those points right next to each other which rarely happens as its usually a river far from a high point. So just because a county is “hilly” doesn’t make it a good candidate for a ski resort.

Northeast Ohio is in a snowbelt. Historically from the 1930s to 1960s when most ski resorts opened in the US there was very little snow-making if any. Resorts relied on natural snow. Another factor to consider when opening a ski area then and today is the direction the resort faces. Definitely do not want southerly facing slopes. Opening a ski resort today is going to cost a lot of money for snow making, lifts, water, electricity, parking, lodges, rental fleet, and insurance. You’ll need approximately 50-60 acres of land at a minimum. Ideally 400’ to 1000’ vertical to make it worthy of visiting regionally.

I don’t think you’ll find any cliff drops anywhere in Ohio, at least inbounds. Take a beginner intro lesson or as Vail calls it a discovery lesson. Its an hour and a half long includes rental equipment in the price of the lesson.

I went to blue knob in PA last week. Its the closest 1000’ vertical ski resort to Ohio. It was a 3.5hr drive for me in Summit county. It is a bare bones resort in a New England kind of layout with tight trails that can get pretty steep. I just day skied and came back.

I think of the I271 expansion as it was a shovel-ready project. I imagine the amount of accidents will have dropped quite a bit with the better flow and separation. There were so many choke points before with cross lane shifting in several sections. They have taken the challenge out of commuting on I271. Its boring and bland now to drive. The white knuckle driving is now reserved for snowbelt white outs. Hopefully we can have some rail shovel ready projects when the infrastructure budget finally gets passed.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I’d prefer to go to Chicago via train without spending significant time in Michigan. High speed to chicago would be amazing as in 110mph. That would absolutely be the way to fly to Chicago from Cleveland.

Personal Finance / Investing Thread
^The problem is many people are now shorting at $350 and down. So that will increase the amount shorted. Also the shorts that have a few thousand shares that are institutions have a lot of money and know this will burst in a few days of this market silliness. I’ve been a long hold on another stock that is been highly active the past few weeks- GEVO. I think it might pop i to the twenties today when Biden announces the climate change program. A founder of GEVO is on his science board and the company is implementing carbon-free renewable fuels.

OK. My bad. I was distracted with work and went down the rabbit hole of KJP’s link thinking that was the new plan.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
It doesn’t say the integrity of the bridge was updated. It sounds like its about to fall apart from the heavy trucks that go across. Proposed Project: The proposed project involves replacing the bridge on Canal Road, located over the CSX railroad and under the Norfolk-Southern railroad, in Cleveland (illustrations). According to the sponsor, the proposed bridge project is intended to improve the safety and condition of a deteriorated infrastructure providing a vital link to and from the Flats industrial area. Furthermore, the purpose of the proposed project is to make Canal Road safer by constructing a compliant road curve in turn improving lines of sight for drivers. The proposed work will provide a continuous multi use path from the recently completed East 9th Extension along Canal Road to West 3rd Street. Overall, the improvements will make the Flats more multi use travel friendly, serve existing businesses, and be a catalyst for redevelopment in the area.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Nope. Its a small bridge on Canal Rd. It has the big Norfolk Southern train bridge over the valley above it. Its at the south end of Canal rd before it goes over W 3rd st bridge.

I wouldn’t call what we ski on as ice although some people out west might. I would say the snow has a higher water content than out west and is generally called hardpack. The quality of snow made by the fan snowguns is much superior to the previous generation. If one hasn’t been to the local hills in 15 years, the assumption is its an ice ball. Its not unless you go on a day that is really cold with no new snow for several days after a lot of freeze thaw cycles. I’d say the snow making in Ohio is better than what Holiday Valley or Seven Springs use since they are using the old style systems of compressed air/water mix.

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
I guess the point I was making is that there are many attractive attributes to an area that is easily accessible with diverse sporting pursuits. This can be kayaking the Cuyahoga, skiing, and mountain biking in the country’s first mountain bike trail in a national park. For someone that has never skied, going to high altitude if you are coming from the coast, its going to be a significant challenge just breathing for the first few days while getting used to being in ski equipment. Lessons can easily cost $150+ an hour out west. Ski lessons in Colorado are pretty much the same lesson in Ohio in terms of what is taught minus the scenery. Lessons, equipment rental, flights, hotel, transportation to the resort it could be a $3000-5000+++ vacation out west for a family of 5 vs a $1500-2500 vacation to fly to Ohio. Being on the Vail and EPIC pass website people see there are options besides the usual glitzy mountain resorts. They can still say they “skied Vail” when they get back to Houston. I can see only places that have direct flights from the coastal sunbelt to CLE and CAK being the possible traffic blip for MLK and Presidents day weekends which are big “ski holidays” for family skiing. Flights to DIA and SLC are famously expensive those weekends. There are plenty of side trips of people being in Ohio for business or pleasure also adding skiing to their itinerary throughout ski season. For example a few years ago, I was at the bar on a Friday afternoon at Boston Mills speaking with an attractive female from Tampa Bay that was there on business working as a consultant for First Energy in Akron. Having the giant marketing of Vail with probably a million people that have EPIC passes, there likely are more people coming to Cleveland than ever before to ski/learn to ski.

Very anecdotal story but there could be some tangible benefits for more sports tourism in the Cleveland area in the future if this repeats with other sunbelt families. A ski instructor friend said she taught a Puerto Rican family from Houston at Boston Mills now owned by Vail. They wanted to go skiing and found the prices to fly and stay much more affordable than their other locations in Colorado and Utah. So they flew to Cleveland and went skiing for MLK jr weekend.

I’m hoping with a real infrastructure focus from the train president and mayor pete pushing for great lakes cities this plan will to come to fruition sooner than later.

Metro Cleveland: Road & Highway News
I thought the idea of tunneling under the river was silly. Then I thought of the Detroit river tunnel to Canada and it really makes sense. I guess i was thinking that it would be coming from the higher bluffs on the west side. Still a very expensive proposition but like its said it will be pretty expensive with a new bridge and the maintenance is far higher for a bridge over time.
