Akron: Downtown: Development and News
Found out that Akron is getting a “baby Beacon” in downtown Akron. Tony Troppe is going to build 3-4 stories of apartments on top of a parking deck on Main St.

Akron: Downtown: Development and News
^Its mainly a wacky layout because of the various urban renewal projects of the 1960s and early 1970s. Streetcar lines are long gone that fed into Akron. The two massive department stores of O’neils and Polskys are shadows of what they were. Whole neighborhoods were torn down to create the inner-belt. Check out Luigis and look at the old photos of downtown Akron. Many classic buildings were knocked down to create the Cascade Plaza.

I believe that is the next section of Main St to get “the treatment”.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
It seems to me that CVSR is primarily funded and directed by old school industrial company sponsorships: Goodyear, First Energy, and Timken, I can mainly think of. I can see the industrial flats companies of Cleveland wanting to be a part of this same type of sponsorship and direction. That would be Sherwin-williams and Cleveland Cliffs in my mind. Another interested player would have to be Dan Gilbert since he owns Tower City, the Cavs, and the Casino. I don’t doubt that there are many more interested parties in NOACA, Downtown Cleveland Partnership, city, county, port, CLE Metroparks, etc that can help grease the wheels to get this moving past Independence. Who knows maybe its RTA that is wanting to put a rapid line to Independence instead.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
Cleveland Cliffs now owns the railroad that was owned by ArcelorMittal. Not sure what other infrastructure they own in the flats. But as a Cleveland company they would be much more hospitable to working out a deal than a Luxembourg company. It looks like it is called the Cleveland Works Railway.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I’d agree. It looks like Browns finally have adults in charge and a system that makes sense for them. They no longer have glaring weaknesses that teams can exploit. No longer can teams put a bit of pressure on the Browns and reasonably expect that the Browns will wilt with mental mistakes. A true test is this week to see where they are.

Cleveland: Cleveland-Cliffs
^Good analysis. It sounds like a candidate for a tower at Nucleus.

Cleveland: Cleveland-Cliffs
After a bunch of major steel company purchases in the last year or so it is difficult to predict what the rightsizing of the corporate offices should be. That is likely being discussed internally now. There is plenty of vacancy of office space so there are options aplenty. I would expect any buzz to begin now and probably have a sense by the end of the year if they are looking to make some moves or build anew. They very well could come to the same conclusion that SHW came to in that they need to consolidate in a modern new urban campus or perhaps they need a towering steel building. Who knows.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
I figure with the towpath coming close to completion in Cuyahoga county the natural step is to work on getting the train connected downtown as well. The track and facilities are mainly there. It is similar processes and planning to the towpath in acquiring the right of ways and finishing up the infrastructure needs and improvements for a passenger train. The new Cleveland Cliffs company is now a bigger player in this regard.

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
^I’d agree. I would think 18k-20k sqft floorplates is more realistic than using the whole footprint up. That would put it at 55 floors at 18k. I guess the higher the building the more slack cut for SHW to focus on a walkable campus at street level. I wonder if wind will be considered in the the final shape and design with several tall buildings so close to each other. I would think a tall design might need to be put through a wind tunnel to see what the ground effects will be like.

Akron: Random Development and News
^Intriguing project. I would think the track hasn’t been used in 80-90 years. I can’t even see any trace of it on google maps past exchange st. I’d love to see what the ROW was. I76 is likely covering a lot of its path and that was built in the early 50s. It seems like a crazy idea creating an aerial walkway winding its way through various neighborhoods. It would definitely be a nice strolling attraction for the Goodyear HQ complex. i can’t see this getting past Exchange.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
^Hasn’t Harbor/Market Square already created underground infrastructure to link in with the station? I thought they were eagerly wanting to be linked in to some access way for their residents and business users.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^It would seem to me that a free fare Sundays would be a good way to test that out.

Cleveland: Downtown: nuCLEus
Continuing in that positive assessment, the global economy and macro trends have always affected Cleveland from boom and bust times. I think Cleveland and Northeast Ohio are positioned well for this new weird era. I would expect that the region’s bio-tech knowledge will keep the region relevant. The ease of expansion, the high quality yet low cost of living, wealth of recreational and cultural opportunities, and diversity will keep the region growing. To me Cleveland keeps getting more livable in an unbroken line from Rocky River to Shaker Square. As residential towers rise its a confirmation of that neighborhood’s health and cultural wealth. Its clear billions of dollars are going to be spent in the urban core on HQs and moving government offices, courts, jails, police hq, plus infrastructure and road updates over the next five years. The spin off in capital spending and the theoretically improved government efficiency will resonate through the region. We know much better now what we had no clue about 6-8 months ago. We now can plan for what a post-covid world might look like. I imagine this includes building design and right-sizing and blending the right amount of office, retail, and living space for a new cbd complex. I consider this project a nice get. If anything, this project probably does need to get started soon as there will be so many competing resources it might be too expensive to get it off the ground.

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
^It is a reliever airport of sorts. The point is for an actual emergency a passenger jet is not going to have that kind of time to fly 40 miles and line up with that runway.
-
Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
The point is there are NO BIRDS currently flying around where the turbines are now. The studies of the wind turbines are in fields where birds likely are. It is fallacy to match a spot 1-4 miles out into lake erie with turbines that are on shore. Even during migration the birds are not going to be flying that low if they plan on making it across Lake Erie at that point. If we were sticking them by the Erie islands you would have a point. I also doubt that bats would fly that far out over water at night looking for insects.
-
Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
I don’t see this as a valid reason any ways to halt wind turbines on Lake Erie. What bird is going to be flying that low that far out from land? Sure it might kill a few distracted sea gulls a year. It might kill a cormorant or 2. The majority of birds that are migrating are going to be flying well above the turbines.

Cleveland: Clark–Fulton / Stockyards: Development and News
Its their sour haus. When brewing sours it is a good idea to have those beers isolated from the main brewery so as not to contaminate the normal production beers with wild yeast strains.

I’m hoping for Obi. He is dynamic, like a thinner Zion.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I think this extremely hard to gauge as an overall regional indicator other than adding more illness to a region that has a plethora of issues is obviously not helpful. How it ends up affecting the region depends on leadership and how well the region masks up. Benefit I got from this article is I think the ‘rust belt’ moniker is finally going by the wayside. Maybe covid will finally kill that off.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Friend suggested calling the Indians “The Tribe”. Just throwing it out there as I thought it was a very good idea.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
i knew instinctively that townhall would be pretty much the best place to find covid. People go there from all over Cleveland and from all over the US. I’ve stayed away since the initial shut down.

Ohio Energy Bailout Referendum
Clean up in aisle 4. I knew that First Energy deal was shady. Hopefully he gets 10-15 years.

Akron: Historic Photos
i just hiked the glens trail this past weekend to get a sense of what that means. I didn’t realize that the lake behind the dam starts pretty much at the bottom of that picture. The glens trail connects to the gorge trail going along the river beneath the sandstone cliffs for about a mile to gorge blvd. At gorge blvd that is where it opens up to the widened lake. Most of the hike is about 25-30ft above the river. I imagine when the dam comes down it will be 45-50ft above the river. The dam is 60ft tall so that should be a drop of about 100ish feet in 2 miles when its ready to go. There are already people with river kayaks on their vehicles driving all over northern Summit county.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I would say Ohio City will likely in 5-10 years be that neighborhood. MetroHealth wants to invest heavily in Clark-Fulton. That should help change things radically. The whole near west side keeps growing and the property values keep going up comparatively.
