  1. ^Through some searching on the web I was able to find Green Energy Technology's website.. This has more information about their wind spire and cool diagrams.. http://www.getsmartenergy.com/index-1.html Not surprising to me at least, its an Akron-based company. I can almost visualize a couple perched at the Inventor's HOF grabbing winds off the sail
  2. I noticed biking alongside "Thomas the Tank Engine" today in the valley that all the cars had Akron based organizations as listed sponsors. The main one seems to be Metro- the Akron Metropolitan bus system. I don't think there's much of a chance of it coming under the aegis of RTA. However it probably would be a good idea to find someone with Cleveburg roots to head up the CVSR since they're trying to get access to the flats and TC and preferrably someone with pull in this apparent political process.
  3. If it wasn't addressed many times earlier in this thread... The current convention center that is in downtown Cleveland was designed in the 1920s. I would dare say its probably the oldest convention center in America. I'm sure someone will find that maybe one in poughkeepsie is older or something... The problem not really being that its old, just outdated. Its not convenient in any fashion for most conventions. So much so that most people that book conventions don't even bother to put Cleveland on a list of options let alone a short list. Its been a while since I've been to a convention or fair at the CC either(5yrs or so). The main issues is that it is multi-level and it doesn't have many docks for trucks. The other arduous part of this to me is that Cleveland doesn't necessarily want to look like a complete alsoran. Most large US cities have relatively brand new CCs built within the last 15 years. There's quite a glut of convention space. Its basically going to go down like this: If the slot bill passes, FC will come to Cleveland's rescue and push forth a triple play of buildings for the CC, a casino, and the Medical Merchant Mart to connect to Tower City. If the people of Ohio vote against slots then I suspect the convention center on the mall will get refurbished and added on to.
  4. I think clvlnder should fence sit some more. It will not likely be whether anyone is for or against the mall site. Its possible the mall doesn't even have a chance. The outcome of the casino vote will be deciding where this goes. Its obvious that at this point it pretty much nullifies logic because millions of dollars have entered the decision making process. My personal unsentimental non-Clevelander thoughts are that the CC on the mall should be built in multiple stages. Let it grow only as big as is needed. Over perhaps 10-12 years it could be completed. Thats assuming they are wanting to spend a half billion on it. This way the IX center also continues to be used until its no longer needed.
  5. The "new" convention center across the malls is expected to have rail access via WFL from what I recall.

I seriously doubt any rumor that begins with the word "loose". Yes the word exists. But the correct spelling in this case is only 1 "o". So the person that breathlessly is trying to get the world to believe that NCR is also leaving Dayton, can go back to cleaning cubicles.
  7. Luckily FC and their architects can't add more land to Scranton Peninsula or this might be more doable. For the Merch Mart to be successful it will need to be of better access to Euclid Ave and University Circle. Hiding behind TC and below downtown Cleveland in the industrial guts isn't exactly accessible nor synergistic, to use an old 90s word. If FC can get the pols to do their bidding for them it will be so overtly obvious that they are bought. Probably why Hagan wants to know which way the wind is blowing come November.
  8. Everything thats in the flats now can co-exist fine. Adding a little bit of retail would be fine. The problem would be the casinos. Car traffic all day long in a port area that sees a lot of truck traffic would not be a smart move. Little granny coming to the flats to drop a few nickels in machines would likely get crushed underneath a dump truck. Personally, if we're going to have slots in OH, keep it at the horse tracks.
  9. Another factor mentioned in another thread would appear to be the infrastructure regulations. I don't recall the thread's name but the gist was that new buildings must adhere to the new regulations for putting in new sewer lines that are not combined. So if there is no separate sewer line going to a main trunk then they must build that in addition. Depending on the location of the land to the trunk and the amount of roads that might need dug up, could have pretty expensive upfront costs just to get the land ready to build.
  10. http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/business/15027459.htm Wasn't sure anyone was aware of this company, Myers Motors and previous to that Corbin Motors of California. Very cool article though.

A local broadcast of an interview with the director of the Akron Art Museum and tour of the new construction. http://www.ch4549.org/nnakron.htm Its the July 7th show on that page.
  12. Thought I'd take the time tonight since I was REALLY bored to tally up the Akron and Canton topics that have been put together by Grasscat of "Random Akron and Canton developments" topics in the City discussion section. My very unscientific findings are that 154 newspaper snippets are listed in this thread and approximately 14 are actually in Akron or Canton. Most of the other locations are in in Cuyahoga, Portage, Wayne, Geauga, Stark, and Summit and a few others that I'm not familiar with further south of Stark. AK unrepresented.. A better name for the topic might be Random Northeast Ohio developments. Just felt the thread name was very misleading.
  13. ^I kinda liked it. There was a Simpsonian quality to it. Just hope they don't build those support bases that close to the road or on the road for that matter. Would they need to keep the railroad gates there if the track is elevated? i guess they have no way of doctoring up the photo to take out the gates.
  14. I think I saw this perhaps mentioned early on in this thread regarding what happens in KY. Basically let people keep their school districts as they are. But have county-wide levys. All the property tax money goes to one big county pool and is split equally among the kids in that county. Obviously some considerations would be made for districts that have mixed districts. But it couldn't be that hard to figure out whether there are more students coming into a district from an adjoining county than are exiting to another county. Money would go towards the county where the child is being educated. This would definitely affect real estate values. The richest neighborhood with the best school systems would likely see a decline in the value of their houses. This would definitely help push regionalism a LOT more if this were to happen. People would care a little more for whats happening in their county. I would suspect county-wide the schools would become better since everyone in the county is in the same boat. Thoughts?
  15. Akron has lost the HQs of Firestone, General Tire, BF Goodrich and GenCorp. It still has Goodyear, First Merit, First Energy, Omnova, and GoJo. But obviously not a great job is done letting people know those companies are in Akron. I wouldn't think Dayton should ever have a difficult time economically as long as the Wright-Patt is around. All they really need to do is focus more attention on becoming more competitive in the housing market. That would deepen its tax base. Too bad Dayton can't absorb Oakwood. That would take away a lot of the ambivalence people from Dayton seem to have in even visiting Oakwood.

The population is pretty static in Summit Co. but still half the size of Cuyahoga. The real issue though is that Summit Co. is truly a crossroad of trucking traffic throughout Ohio and the midwest. I would guess there are probably 2-3x more trucking depots in Summit co. than Cuyahoga Co. Roadway is still headquartered in Akron. Summit Co. isn't "Southside". Accessibility to the 271 corridor is going to get more challenging since that area is absolutely growing with Progressive announcing more plans to build and UH announcing a major new hospital as well. Plus access already sux at best from Summit Co. getting to UC.

I wouldn't totally say no-man's land.. There is the Cuyahoga Valley N.P. within a mile away. Otherwise Northern Summit co has been getting developed pretty fast because its such an onerous chore to drive on Rt. 8 going North to Cuyahoga Cty. Its still not easy going north on 271 when there's 2 lanes packed of traffic from each 480 and 271 merging into 3 lanes. I would be surprised if thats not the highest volume in the state on 6 lanes. ODOT seriously needs to add express lanes to 271-480 splits, but I suspect Cuyahoga Cty is denying this. Regionalism is bigger than just the first suburbs.

U of Akron is currently looking at building a new football stadium. They want the new stadium by the campus and very close to downtown. No ideas yet on what will become of the Rubber Bowl. Its probably not the best place to put an MLS stadium as far as access but there seems to be plenty of open land right there and it has a pretty cool view looking over at the massive airdock and akron-fulton airport. It would still be accessible to close to a million people within a half hour drive. That would be the most likely place in my mind to place a soccer stadium if one had to be built in Summit.

This is truly a lame ass proposal. They want money from Summit Co. residents to help them pay to develop all this for them to make some money. I don't think they should get a cent from the public. If they are to get any money it should come from Northfield center residents only and they should have a vote on it. I see absolutely no good coming from this proposal. Who the hell "needs" soccer fields? Who the hell needs more retail? Wolstein should worry about whats going on in Cuyahoga County and not bother to play in Summit Co.
  20. i'll definitely consider living in the 2nd phase development in 3-4years. Its a pretty good spot in Akron to be. It has excellent views of downtown Akron with the about to be completed Akron Museum expansion in full view of this building. The newly renovated Akron Public Library should be visible with its also very modern architure. I imagine there are some eclectic views from this building with the Cuy Valley down the Northern expanse. Also St V -M(LeBron high) is expanding right across from Howard St. not sure what that will look like. I expect also to be viewable are Tangiers domes, Quaker Square silos, UA Polymer Sci building, and the Y-bridge.

ah. That sucks.. I was hoping you were going to blow me away with all sorts of Stark co. developments. As Summit co. keeps slowly chugging along that will help Stark and neighboring counties around Summit grow as well. The airport definitely helps enhance this and keep the momentum going.

I'm not sure I see Stark county quickly developing. Timken, Hoover, Diebold are the main companies of Stark co. I don't see any "growing" or developing. I'm actually curious if you think there is growth in Stark. I haven't seen it, but then all i know thats growing in Stark is the traffic around Belden. I don't think you mean new houses in Jackson. Hope you don't mean a casino in Massillon. Just curious. Welcome to UO.
  23. He also got the name of the Chicago train system wrong calling it Metro instead of Metra.

This will be soooo much fun watching be built. Anyone that drives on Rt 8 will have plenty of time to watch with all the trucks that will go in and out to get to this property alongside all the other construction trucks outside the property that will be working on Route 8's transformation. Good times.

Very impressive. I'm sure had it been built the layout would've been altered to take downtown a little more into consideration. There would've been extensions and perhaps new lines over the years. This could've changed Dayton quite drastically. Dayton would've clearly got the TOD concept. Too bad our feds suck.
