  1. Cleveland's Uptown development named a finalist for prestigious Rudy Bruner Award CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Rudy Bruner Foundation, based in Cambridge, Mass., announced that Cleveland's acclaimed Uptown development is one of five finalists for the 2015 Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence. The biennial award, established in 1987, has sought "to identify transformative urban places in America and to celebrate their impact on the economic, social, and physical fabric of our cities." http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2015/02/clevelands_uptown_development.html#incart_river
  2. I didn't deduce this from the renderings but for whatever it's worth, there's this with the new garage: "To fit better within the projected neighborhood, the garage is designed to incorporate 12,000 to 15,000 square feet of retail on the first floor of its frontages on East 105th Street and Cedar Avenue" Clinic seeks approval to build a new, 3,000-space parking garage at University Circle's edge http://www.cleveland.com/architecture/index.ssf/2015/02/clinic_seeks_approval_to_build.html#incart_river
  3. So I posted this in here because Jones New York, Victoria's Secret, and Brooks Brothers remain as TC last few legitimate national name clothing retailers and accordingly have the best retail spaces. (could be missing some but I don't think so). Footlocker and Champs are also national names but cater to the athletic market. This is a blow to TC, hope they can fill that very visible spot with something worthwhile. Jones New York plans to shutter all 127 of its outlet stores - including two in Northeast Ohio CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jones New York, the women's sportswear and career wear retailer, has announced that it is pursuing unspecified "strategic alternatives" for the brand and plans to shutter all 127 of its outlet stores -- including locations at Tower City Center in downtown Cleveland and at Aurora Premium Outlets. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2015/02/jones_new_york_plans_to_shutte.html#incart_river
  4. I knew Haslam was an agent sent from Pittsburgh to perpetually sabotage us.
  5. Well, it may not be that simple. The article says: "As for his decision to shutter the Coventry location, Lane points to neighborhoods like University Circle, Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway as challenges to the bottom line. “The competition is insane, and the development dollars are going to certain neighborhoods,” he says." I was talking to Declan, the owner of Parnell's, and he said much to the same effect. His formerly very lucrative location on Lee was not doing so hot while his Playhouse Square location was flourishing. He attributed this to the rise of downtown, University Cirlce, and the near west side neighborhoods. It seems that Heights is getting a bad deal as parts of the inner city attract more of the entertainment crowd. 10-20 years ago, Heights was about as urban as you could get in Cleveland without facing some of the more overt nasty elements like crime and blight found in the inner city. But now, you can get your urban fix in the actual inner city while crime and blight in some neighborhoods have receded, or at least there is a perception they are more under control. *Edit: ^ probably applies to eastsiders more so than westsiders
  6. Whooooaaa the Coventry location?! That has been a fixture there as long as I can remember. Crazy. Hope they can fill the spot with something quality. 7. Give a different set of facts, yes. But here, the only property owner is Fairmount, who is indeed electing to tax themselves and decides how the money is spent.

The end of an era. The new ones look pretty cool although largely unchanged. Great Lakes Brewing Co. unveils new labels CLEVELAND, Ohio - A sneak peek at five redesigned labels for Great Lakes Brewing Co.'s year-round brews is out. The brewery recently announced a change to its logo, redesigned by Brokaw Inc. in Cleveland. The labels are being done by Canadian artist Darren Booth. The updated designs keep a more pronounced, art-deco-like look: http://www.cleveland.com/drinks/index.ssf/2015/02/great_lakes_brewing_co_unveils_1.html#incart_river

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet but "Live! Cleveland" is an organization that aims to give information about living in Cleveland neighborhoods. Anyone looking to relocated should check it out for more information. http://www.livecleveland.org/ I heard the website is going through a major relaunch so it should look different pretty soon.
  10. So the song of representative democracy goes my good man.
  11. There is no rationale beyond corporate welfare and taxation without representation. If you can't build it, then don't. Private developers can now levy taxes on the citizenry? Council passed the preliminary components of this a long time ago. The developer cannot tax the citizenry.
  12. My understanding is that this additional tax would fund the new infrastructure and improvements in the FEB area only - like a SID (special improvement district). Its a way for the developer not to pay for the construction on non cash producing components of the development. It's also a pretty slick tool because if Fairmount did have to foot the bill they would charge more rent on their properties which in turn would pressure the tenants to raise prices. This way, consumers see the "low" price and then get hit with the tax only when they cash out.
  13. I think its clear he's eyeing a mayoral run after Frank Jackson carries out this final term. Now is his time to get in the press and get attention for grandstanding on what considers populist issues. Pity we have to suffer through watching it. I actually like the attention he spends on promoting fatherhood, community policing, and his criticism of society's disregard for "routine" murders.
  14. I watched some of the live stream the afternoon. It was some of the most idiotic, cringeworthy grandstanding I have ever seen.
  15. Hmmm interesting rumor. No deed has been recorded yet, though. Important to note that literally all the land around it is owned by the Jacobs/Nautica Group. So this potentially may be the last piece before that group owns about 5 contiguous city blocks of land. The optimist in me hopes this purchase/teardown foreshadows a larger new development project. But the pessimist in me knows that Jacobs Group has been more interested in being a parking lot owner in downtown Cleveland than any meaningful developer. And god knows we need more parking on the west bank of the flats!!!! Edit: Here is the parcel number - 003-19-016
  16. If we get 20 people and we're looking at $1,500-$1,100 a year that comes to $75-$55 a head per year. If we can get around those numbers, count me in.
  17. At the very least it's a huge value-add to the developer that's going unrealized. The building is more than just an old building, it was developed by the sons of a U.S. President from Cleveland with the same namesake. I mean, I guess that can be dismissed as antiquarianism but then the same could be said for any historical backstory. Should we rip down the Garfield Monument while we're at it?
  18. Yeah I kinda thought that too. There have been some small cherry pickers and "light" construction activity at the property for some time. However, come to think of it I haven't noticed what I would consider large scale activity at the building to date. So I'm guessing, from the wording of the article, that they were able to do some light prep work but were yet to secure a bridge loan to close their construction cost gap - which they seem to have now.
  19. Looks like financing is wrapped up and construction has commenced in earnest. Theater District office building to undergo $18 million conversion to apartments, commercial space Work is underway, according to a news release issued Monday, Jan. 26, by Cleveland Development Advisors, which helps catalytic real estate developments close gaps in financing. CDA, which is housed at the Greater Cleveland Partnership, provided a $4.5 million loan to help the developers bridge the delay between building the project and receiving funds from federal and Ohio historic credits vital to such conversions of older office buildings to multifamily use. A notice filed Jan. 20 with Cuyahoga County to mark commencement of construction said the project also has financing from FirstMerit Bank and identifies Dalad Group as the general contractor on the project. Dalad played a similar role on the 2320 Lofts, the conversion of a warehouse at that street address on Superior Avenue East as student apartments. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20150126/FREE/150129855/theater-district-office-building-to-undergo-18-million-conversion-to
  20. Yeah this building is an example of a property who's real history is more valuable, to the developer, than any marketing scheme. This is from the PD article last spring: "Built in the late 1800s by two of President James Garfield's sons, the longtime bank building could become 172 apartments above ground-floor restaurants or stores." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/04/millennia_companies_to_buy_gar.html I would think that the connection to President Garfield would lend a sense of classy legitimacy that can't be purchased or created. The same was true of the 9 complex. For the Ameritrust Tower portion, I found it weird that the Breuer name wasn't woven into the branding of the project. Breuer is considered an international heavyweight in the architecture world. Even for the average Joes who don't know who he is, you can play up the fact that the building was built by a super famous guy.

Totally agree - it's a really bad look. Dion is less than graceful but we didn't part ways on a sour note. I just can't figure out where the bad feelings come from. I still root for the guy and enjoyed watching him play his first couple years in the league. He felt like one of us when he was here.
  22. CHPD handled this quickly. This happened in a nice, quiet area too. 23. Hasn't most of it been painted over? Some yes. But most graffiti writers have profound respect for the big wigs and leave them untouched. There's stuff in Cleveland that has been "riding" untouched since the 90s/early 2000s. Some has been painted over by the City but that is a function of its location.
