  1. Red Line Greenway dream moves closer to reality with RTA vote CLEVELAND, Ohio -- RTA board members voted Tuesday to collaborate with the Cleveland Metroparks and the Rotary Club of Cleveland on a study of a proposed greenway trail that would extend from West 65th Street to downtown Cleveland. The Red Line Greenway is a long-held dream of members of the Rotary Club of Cleveland, who have spearheaded the proposal and worked over the past several years with the nonprofit LAND Studio to shape the plan. Besides RTA and the Rotary, the Cleveland Metroparks also has a lead role in the proposed path. The line would run from the Michael Zone Recreation Center, cross into RTA property at about West 41st Street, continue on RTA property past the West 25th Street rapid station, and go from there to the Viaduct transit bridge above the Cuyahoga River. At that point it would connect to other regional trails on Franklin Road. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/10/red_line_greenway_dream_moves.html#incart_river
  2. Positively Cleveland enlists the help of young professionals to help sell the city to locals, tourists CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Eric Mack was born in 1982, 13 years after the Cuyahoga River caught on fire. So he's always a little surprised when potential visitors to his hometown – people his own age -- bring up that infamous event from 1969. "I laugh, and I say, 'You know, we have the Burning River Fest, which promotes the health of the river and the lake.' And then I tell them to go out on the Goodtime, so they can really see how great the city is." Inevitably, once they're here, he said, "They're blown away every time." http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2014/10/positively_cleveland_enlists_t.html#incart_m-rpt-1

  4. Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport to serve as 'incubator' for start-ups CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport could be on its way to becoming an incubator for start-ups looking to eventually rent space at a Geis Cos. office park, soon to be built on adjacent land. Cleveland City Council approved legislation Monday authorizing the city to spend as much as $1 million to conduct an assessment and to design improvements to Burke's terminal building in an effort to of attract new business tenants. ...Smith said he does not want the terminal to compete with the office park Geis is designing for 20 acres southwest of the airport. Rather, the city hopes that businesses will grow at the airport facility and eventually become tenants in the Geis building.
  5. So what happens to the old location? I can't see Sam McNulty letting that space go dark for long. Black Pig leaving West 25th Street, moving to former Light Bistro spot CLEVELAND, Ohio -- You'll find The Black Pig at a new address in Ohio City by mid-November. Monday afternoon, chef and co-owner Michael Nowak inked a deal to take over the former Light Bistro, 2801 Bridge Ave. Though he has "loved the building, and the restaurant, and the concept" of the space at 1865 West 25th St. which he and his staff have occupied for roughly two years, Nowak says he couldn't deny the advantages of what has become a landmark around the corner. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2014/10/black_pig_leaving_west_25th_st.html#incart_m-rpt-1

  8. How does this even happen? I can't help but feel some sort of rage with stories like this... Gunman robs three Cleveland children of snacks, ice cream CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Three boys are afraid to go outside after they were robbed of a bag of snacks at gunpoint early Thursday evening. The boys - an 11-year-old, his 10-year-old brother and their 11-year-old cousin - walked down Otis Court at East 73rd Street about 5:10 p.m. Thursday after a quick trip to a nearby corner store for potato chips, juice and ice cream. A group of teenagers were outside a home on Otis Court talking as the three children walked home. One of the teens, who had a red T-shirt wrapped around his face, walked up to the boys and pulled a pistol from his waistband. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/10/gunman_robs_three_cleveland_ch.html#incart_river
  9. What am I watching?
  10. Hhhmmmmm so what's planned for the old Max Hayes site? That's a site to watch.
  11. ^ Seriously! What is their basis for the opposition? * I just read the article in full. Even the most "intrusive" iteration doesn't do anything but complement the memorial. Having the promenade right up to the monument is, IMO, the best use of space as it encourages the monument's use. The expanded planters, which the monument group prefers, substantially cut down the functional space and make the monument less integrated with the rest of the square. Those people are out of their minds. Is this obstructionism for obstructionism's sake?
  12. So...here's a nice lil' nugget. 2 high-ish profile parcels in Tremont changed hands on 05-AUG-14: 004-12-108 & 004-12-001 were acquired by 1001 FAIRFIELD LLC from Gillota Fuel Products, Inc.. Each sold for $197,500. 1001 FAIRFIELD LLC was incorporated 4/08/2014 by an attorney at Walter Haverfield LLP who specializes in real estate development/real estate law. http://www2.sos.state.oh.us/pls/bsqry/f?p=100:7:0::NO:7:P7_CHARTER_NUM:2285157 Where are these parcels? They are occupied by the gas station and the adjacent house at the corner of Fairfield and West 10th, a pretty sexy corner of Tremont. Here are some maps:
  13. Wow, that is one of my catalytic "I'll believe it when I see it" events. Quick question, are you referring to THE market parking lot (rectangular lot between 24th Pl. & 24th St.) or the "other" market parking lot (triangular lot at abuts the RTA tracks)?
  14. I've gotta say, I think I like the Zagstar model more than the publicly funded bike shares across the Country. Our system popped up quick, with private backing, and is expanding even quicker without the agonizing public funding process. Columbus seemed to talk about their program for years with plenty of back and forth before anything happened. Is the Zagstar model cheaper than the public systems? New bike-sharing program expands today to more Cleveland neighborhoods CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The bike-sharing program that zipped into Cleveland less than six weeks ago is already expanding past its initial launch site of Ohio City. Sponsors of the Zagster bike rental stations will announce three new locations today: -- A downtown station on West 6th Street sponsored by Barley House Cleveland -- A Tremont station, located in front of Civilization Café on West 11th Street, sponsored by Tremont West Development Corporation, Cleveland Councilman Joe Cimperman, Platform Brewery and Civilization Café/City Roast Coffee -- A University Circle station at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Cornell Road, sponsored by Courtyard by Marriott Cleveland University Circle Sixteen bikes will be stationed among the three new sites and available for rental beginning at noon today. The expansion brings Zagster's city-wide fleet to 50 bikes. The bike-share program got underway Sept. 10 with 34 of the light-framed Breezer-brand bikes scattered among five rental stations in Ohio City and one at the Superior Viaduct. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/10/new_bike-sharing_program_expan.html#incart_river
  15. ^ And he actually has site control here, at the cost of a sizable investment that he expects a return on that cannot be provided by its current use.
  16. Man, those always jazz me up big time. They really did a good job on this.
  17. So, for those that qualify as accredited investors, there is a new way to invest in local real estate projects. Vestor, a local start-up, is selling shares of debt for a Brewery project in Duck Island. You can buy any amount of the 50 available shares for $5,000 each. If you buy $25,000 or more worth of the fund you get preferred equity in the project. For the debt holders, your return is 8% with an exit after the 5th year. This is a very cool funding model that has the potential to get a lot more local investors involved in local real estate deals. In turn, it's a great tool for developers to raise capital. Here is a link to Vestor's offering: http://www.vestor.co/Forest-City-Brewery (Add yourself to the mailing list for future offerings) Here is the location of the brewery (red pin): For those that are interested in investing or know someone who might be, please feel free to DM me for more information. Or, feel free to DM me if you are just interested in Vestor. *Please note that only accredited investors or corporate entities may buy shares. Definition of accredited investor: In the United States, for an individual to be considered an accredited investor, they must have a net worth of at least one million US dollars, not including the value of their primary residence or have income at least $200,000 each year for the last two years (or $300,000 together with their spouse if married) and have the expectation to make the same amount this year."
  18. If there is any silver lining to this whole thing, it is the fact that it didn't make the front page of cleveland.com and was not a "featured" story. It got surprisingly little play by the editors considering how potentially hot it could have been. (I hope there are no PD editors reading this)
  19. Definitely Duck Island. Brickman has site control, he's demoed certain parts of the site already, he's deep in the administrative process, and he has a track record of getting similar projects done. I'm not sure his financing situation but housing in that neighborhood is likely to get a pretty positive look from lenders.
  20. From twitter:
  21. ^ I wonder what the motivation is here.
  22. ^? Weird. Russell Berusch has plans to build on that parcel, ultimately displacing Mi Pueblo. He was granted conceptual approval last month by the City Planning Commission. The BZA hearing to grant a zoning variance is later this month. * KJP[/member] beat me to it.
  23. Correct, that building is proposed to be between 17th and 18th. The site in the picture is between 17th and 14th on Euclid, for anyone unfamiliar with the area.
  24. City dwellers often make much smaller trips, more often. It's not difficult to walk a few blocks with 2 bags every couple days.
  25. So check this out - I spotted this, this morning. You can't tell from the angle of the picture but the side of the rig read "Versa Sonic." I googled "Versa Sonic" and it is clear that the machine I saw this morning is a hydraulic drill rig. (http://www.laibecorp.com/vsonic.php) It was actively drilling because it was making an incredible racket. Is this the geotechnical analysis for the due diligence on a new PS tower?
