Cleveland: Flats East Bank
That structure you see in the background is a parking garage, but that's not happening as part of phase two. For the foreseeable future, that property (just east of the club) will be a surface lot. Michelle mjarboe[/member] Do you have any information on the second office component you can give us?

Beyond Silicon Valley: Using a MOOC to Build a Community of Support for Global Entrepreneurs Through a series of short, documentary-style videos, students learn how an entrepreneurial ecosystem developed in my hometown of Cleveland. A decade ago, things were dismal in Cleveland for any entrepreneur wanting to start a new business. We were the epitome of the "Rust Belt," losing manufacturing jobs by the thousands each year, and unable to replace them with anything substantial. In 2002, Cleveland was ranked last among 61 cities rated for entrepreneurs by Entrepreneur Magazine. In "Beyond Silicon Valley," we investigated the massive efforts by Cleveland's business, donor and government leaders to reverse the trend and make the city a better place for new businesses and accelerate the growth of start-up companies in the region. A tremendous amount has been accomplished in Cleveland over the last 10 years, but its story is not a simple recipe for success that can be replicated in other communities. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michaelgoldberg/beyond-silicon-valley-using-mooc_b_5604666.html

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I have been critical of Zack Reed in the past, mostly for his irresponsible drinking, but I have recently noticed he seems to be the most (if not only) consistently vocal, elected critic of citywide violence. I also commend him on his efforts and events to promote fatherhood. Nevertheless, I don't think I've ever seen a black elected official ask the police to use "stop and frisk". Should Cleveland Police use "stop and frisk" tactics? Would you be more likely to support it if black elected officials in high crime wards were supportive? Cleveland councilman urges 'Stop and Frisk' tactics Reed said the city's present police tactics are not working in the face of gun violence. "We' need to get in their face. Let them know if you are carrying a gun we are going to get it. You commit a crime you are going to jail. We are going to do all these aggressive things to put in their mind this is not the Wild Wild West." http://www.wkyc.com/story/news/local/cuyahoga-county/2014/07/22/cleveland-councilman-urges-stop-and-frisk-tactics/13015913/

Cleveland: Downtown: Halle Building + Annex Conversion
Demand continues for new apartments in old buildings First the Standard Building, then the Leader Building. Which old downtown Cleveland office building is the next likely target for an apartment redo? None other than one of the city’s most famous, the Halle Building, thanks to its role as the Cleveland department store in Drew Carey’s old TV show and the Christmas-time home of Mr. Jingeling. K&D Group is in the leading role to land the 1228 Euclid Ave. building, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Another source said the paperwork is not executed, though building owner Forest City Enterprises Inc. has settled on K&D as the prospective buyer in a deal to close by year’s end. None of the sources would be identified by name because they are not authorized to discuss the bid or are not affiliated with either principal. The Halle Building, like Leader, would remain as offices until K&D feels the time is right to convert it to apartments, but with a surprise twist: One source said K&D may move first on converting part of the Halle Building garage between Huron Road and Prospect Avenue to apartments while keeping lower floors for parking. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20140719/FREE/140719789/demand-continues-for-new-apartments-in-old-buildings

But why is that "good enough", playing Devil's advocat here. Yes, they are saying positive things, but grossly stating other things. Why do we strive for correct information here, yet wont correct posting elsewhere? Stories in major news outlets generate torrents of comments and it seems overwhelming/futile to even post as you comment usually becomes buried in a matter of seconds. Here, there is somewhat of a set group of people who actually read, comment, and participate in discussion. It feels like a well thought discussion here may actually change someones mind while a comment on CNN gets projected into open space and lost. I definitely see your point, though.

Totally - I just resent the stuff I see in national articles making it sound like Cleveland's economy is all but nonexistent as a dried up steel town and LeBron is the only thing profitable to operate in the region. His presence means money and positive exposure which is fantastic and should be highlighted mostly due to our image's unfair misalignment. However, unless it's put into perspective, out-of-towners miss the fact that we have a huge economy in Northeast Ohio. While LeBron will be a welcome addition, particularly in the urban core, our City and region is not made or broken by him. Cleveland will forge ahead regardless. All that said, I am ecstatic he is back.

Finally some sanity: "LeBron is very big business, and basketball is very big business," said Rosenheck. "But Cleveland is also a pretty big town. ... The city's economy is as big as the country of Hungary, so trying to find the impact of one player in that is a needle in a haystack."

Change the statutory definition of "demolition" to include demolition by neglect. By letting your building fall into such disrepair that it must be demolished (likely by building and housing), you will have been deemed to have demolished your building pursuant to the statutory definition. This of course, would put you on the wrong side of the law in a historic district where you need permission to demolish structures or face penalties. This is a similar issue to the Herold Building fiasco on Prospect. It would be best to write a letter to Cimperman or whoever to change the statutory definition to give the City more leverage over saving historic structures. It seems like it would be an easy fix too. Detroit's City code defines demolition to include demolition by neglect. There is nothing that Detroit can do that we can't.
