  1. Wrong thread I am sure , but is the apartment tower across the river that basically had a moat around it still in play? Is that part of "Phase 3"?

I wonder how they came up with the heights for each zone? Why 900' and not 1000'? You would think they would go over with the heights so developers would NOT have to ask for a variance.
  3. It was a good restaurant, good Peruvian food....if it was opening in today's climate downtown it would have done better.

I can say I have never heard Albany with an Al, always heard it with an All...even here with the Cleveland accent... :)

For the Clevelander's here, let's take it a step further. The pronunciation of the street that runs by Progressive field. Carnegie Ave. It drives me nuts when I here it pronounced "car NEY gee" instead of "CAR nuh gee", but it seems most people around here say the first way.

I think you get the R in wash from non native Clevelanders, by way of W. Virginia or PA, from those that migrated here for work in the auto industry or steel mills. My Father being from Western PA, moved here for work reasons when he was 18. He still pronounces things "strange" to me. Warsh, fire (sounds like far) and other things. My take on this subject is that Ohio has three different regions of speech, North, Central and South. Being from Cleveland, I can hear the Columbus accent and definitely the Cincy accent (which in no way sounds like NYC!). I have friends from Cbus that think Clevelanders sound like they are from NJ. This actually can be true since NJ has Northern, Central and Southern differences, with the Central Jersey sounding less NYC and less Philly. Even within the Cleveland area, you can tell a Cleveland/inner ring accent compared to the outer ring areas.
  7. Thank you KJP, you calmed the shakes I was having from this article(or from the hangover).
  8. Don't like the "don't hold your breath" section... http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2018/01/whats_likely_to_come_from_clev.html#incart_river_home
  9. My father moved here as a result of coal mines being closed. He moved to Cleveland when he was 18 from SW PA because there were a lot of mine closings. He moved here to find work in the steel mills. That was in the 1960's. A lot of people moved here for work in the mills and the auto industry. Those jobs are now gone as well. I don't see unskilled workers flocking to Cleveland because of mines closing only to have unemployment waiting for them here.
  10. Does the murder rate and heroin usage/sales seem to have a direct correlation in Columbus? I work in public safety in Cleveland and there doesn't seem to be a direct correlation with the two here. Like anything, it isn't absolute, but the demographics of the heroin users/dealers and violent crime/murders don't seem to match up. There has been more crossover, but it still seems like more of a Venn diagram.
  11. Toddguy[/member] ,or Cleveland, which is is above 120 and less than half the population and a third of the land area of Columbus. Any which way you slice it, it is a crappy stat to be #1 for either city!

I just walked through the square last night (before the shooting!) and was thinking about what was being said above. Having Superior bus traffic ramming through the square just takes so much away from the feel. The reasons for and against just seem so lopsided...but as stated, that ship has sailed. Rant ended, no need to prune.
  13. I would imagine at this point in time that a "third rail" system would have safety implications as well as too expensive? As for turning rail into BRT...I would rather see just the opposite, turn BRT into rail. No matter how you slice it, under "normal" conditions, traffic and weather have more of an affect on buses than trains. Oh how I wish the politicians in Cleveland in the 1950's would have made the right decision...
  14. Not sure if this is the proper place to ask this question...my current screen name is cfdwarrior...but prior I was jdd941. I cannot even remember why I changed(or had to change) my screen name. Is there any way to merge my old posts under jdd941 to my current screen name?
  15. Is there any speculation about seeing more work done with the original plan (site one or site two)? I would love to see the St. Clair site one building actually completed as first envisioned.
  16. I love the wording for the article on Cleveland.com today..."the city would forego $121 million in taxes"...no, they would be getting $56 million upfront. If the project doesn't get built, then they get $360 thousand a year for a parking lot. They would also NOT be getting hotel tax, income tax, sales tax and other taxes that would be generated by this project if it isn't built. The all or none, cut off my nose to spite my face attitude about this makes no sense to me.
  17. Awesome...soooo...you only get the taxes that a parking lot will get you rather than the up front taxes with possible spin off taxes...in hopes that someone else will build something there in your lifetime...makes perfect sense.
  18. I was in Columbus a year or so ago and saw those, they look spectacular compared to the boxy things they like to throw up around Cleveland. I'm sorry, but I am not a fan of the "modern" design with hints of row house in them. Give me the brick with an actual stoop in the front instead of the faux design with metal steps. Those two examples above look fantastic...IMO.
  19. I haven't heard it discussed, but what about taxes from residents, hotel tax, and any tax generated by businesses housed by this project? My understanding is that the TIF is for the mortgage of the project, has the spin off taxes been discussed? Just curious.

Just an FYI...fire trucks don't have keys...in case you were looking to run off with one. :)

^^ Calling him a felon may miss the mark, splitting hairs. Interesting that having a felony AUTOMATICALLY disqualifies a candidate (along with a few misdemeanors) from even applying to become a firefighter in the City of Cleveland, but it doesn't apply for the highest position of Mayor. Does that make sense?
  22. Nice rendering! That building will then be blocked with the view of NuCLEus, correct?
  23. ^ There needs to be a "like" button...
  24. Not a misnomer at all. I work in Public Safety (Fire) for the city of Cleveland. CPD is definitely NOT allowed to pursue after dirt bikes/4 wheelers. Trust me, they are frustrated by this. The riders know this as well. I have been told by friends that these guys will drive right next to a patrol car, kick the door and take off, knowing they won't be chased. This is just policy. I am sure that someone in the law department weighs out the pros and cons and come up with these rules for CPD to follow. OSP patrolling in Cleveland does NOT have to follow these rules. They WILL chase these guys.
  25. Here's a crazy "out of the box" plan that should be added into the proposal...build more passenger rail like the Metra or LIRR and then add to RTA rail...less automobiles, less traffic. Crazy, I know!
