Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
I cant imagine living in a sprawling suburb myself, but I feel like things have been massively overblown by urban promoters. All we hear is how young people love urban neighborhoods and transit, hate cars and suburbs. Yet when you look at whats happening on the ground, the majority of young people still choose to live in suburbs and drive cars. Even in our urban neighborhoods basically everyone owns cars and uses them to commute. All new residential projects come with plenty of parking. I do realize that this urban living trend exists greater in cities like Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, etc, but it seems to not have caught on as much in lower density midwest cities like Cleveland. It does exist to a degree and no doubt that things are improving, but it is not the majority mindset by any means like the news articles would like us to believe. I wish this wasn't the case but I think its pointless to ignore reality.

General: Complete Streets, Road Diets, and Traffic Calming
^ Its actually been pretty bad during the busier times and people are trying to avoid it but it adds a lot of time to the trip. There is no clear benefit for changing it at this point either. Also CSU is on summer break.

^I love how Toronto keeps the historic buildings facade. When walking on the sidewalk it feels like you are walking in a human scale block with brick buildings and storefronts everywhere. And then you look up and see a 65 storey building above it! Edit: KJP you'd probably like Aura, the tallest residential building in Toronto (currently underconstruction). It has smaller retailers on the ground floor, a Bed Bath and Beyond on the second floor, and a Marshalls on the third! (Can't put into words how crucial it is to not have big box stores on the ground floor) Above that is an additional 75 floors of residential. It also connects to a subway station. It was built on a parking lot (last lot on yonge street) and the sidewalks were widened and improved for an increase in pedestrians.

Cleveland: Downtown Retail Needs
Im no expert on the subject but there are a few things that I think might have hurt/still hurt the retail scene in Cleveland. 1. Not a lot of retail spaces. If you really look at downtown, only a few streets have buildings with ground floor retail space (Euclid, Prospect, Warehouse District, and a few others). The majority of downtown is taken up by large office/government buildings with no ground floor retail space, parking garages, and parking lots. Even Euclid lacks retail space from East 6th to East 9th which cuts up the activity and kills spill over. 2. Indoor retail space. Cleveland has a lot of it. Tower City, the Galleria, The Arcade, Huntington and Old Huntington, and the 5th Street Arcades. Although many of these are dead now, they were once active and allowed for retail space on the street to be abandoned and/or demolished. Additionally Cleveland lacks an existing retail street, even if it was filled with Tower City like stores. This is largely due to our indoor retail space. If these stores were all on Euclid creating a more urban shopping experience, other retailers would be more likely to move in and over time replace the lower end retailers. This is happening in Philadelphia. 3. Lack of smaller buildings. This kind of goes with the first point, but Cleveland lacks smaller buildings which are wide enough to only accommodate one retail space and only go up to about 5 floors. These buildings almost always have retail space due to economics and the owners are probably more aggressive in renting out the space due to the retail space accounting for a large part of the buildings income. If you look at a lot of city's retail streets this type of building is what you typically see.

I have to agree. And most of us on here are guys, so it doesn't affect us as much, but I know several women who try to avoid Public Square since they can't walk through it without feeling uncomfortable, unsafe, and having guys yelling things out to them. Office workers always tend to avoid that quadrant as well and typically stay on the northeast quadrant with the fountain if they go to Public Square at all. That happens to be the quadrant with space away from the sidewalk and with the least amount of bus stops.

I agree completely. And as unfortunate as it is, we have to work with what we have. We can look at pittsburgh for inspiration. Unfortunately Public Square will never be like Market Square, but it can be like Schenley Plaza! Aerial before it was completed. The Porch restaurant filled the space to the right of the picture

Wait, what? No one is proposing to close down any transit facilities except for the East 79th station which should be moved to Buckeye-Woodhill anyway. Sorry should have quoted but that was directed towards a post by clvlndr which said this... "To me, his ramming this wasteful, taxpayer-funded highway through is a form of payback because it will siphon riders away from the Red Line with Joe C's plan to run parallel BRT routes along it (I actually believe it's a plan to ultimately kill the east Side Red Line")"

Why would RTA rebuild the East 55th Station, East 105th Station, Cedar-University Circle Station, and relocated Mayfield-Little Italy station just to close them down to add a BRT? And I doubt a true BRT would even be allowed on the Opportunity Corridor. I do see RTA rerouting normal busses down the corridor in order to improve connections and speed. And whats wrong with westsiders traveling to University Circle for work to pass downtown and midtown? What benefit do their cars have driving through those neighborhoods?

"We can make ice cream or yogurt on the spot in front of you to whatever specifications you want using liquid nitrogen," Adrian explains. Piccadilly University Circle is an "a la minute ice cream parlor," where ice cream is made to order using an ultra-cold churning process that employs liquid nitrogen. ^ Ive been in the renovated car. And its nice but there is just something odd about the car in my opinion and I not exactly sure what it is. Maybe its the bright blue they chose or it might just be that the car was empty since I saw the one on display and haven't gotten an updated car while riding yet. I still think the light rail cars look newer than the renovated red line cars though.

That is the best design in my opinion. And we already have a massive rock gym. I believe that this concept would have had a hard time competing.

How about a folding bike? This way you would be able to store it in your apartment or in the back of your car. They even sell bags you can put your bike in. Honestly I think a bike from Walmart or Target would be fine for your needs. Also Im not sure if they still have them, but last week Aldi was selling name brand bike locks, helmets, and bike racks all for about 50% less than you'd see them elsewhere. They also had seats and other bike accessories. If you are looking to buy I would head up there as soon as possible since the supply was going decently fast and they aren't products the store normally carries. Could be a great way to save a lot of money which you might even be able to put towards a nicer bike if you really wanted to. - Cuyahoga County Sin Tax
