  1. ^ That is actually the old city hall. They rented out space in the upper floors and first floor was still retail.

Cleveland Cavaliers trade Andrew Bynum for Luol Deng CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Early Tuesday morning, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert made it official on Twitter. "Welcome @LuolDeng9 to the Cleveland Cavaliers!'' Gilbert tweeted at 12:54 a.m. The Cavs finally obtained the small forward they've been seeking since the departure of LeBron James by acquiring the two-time All-Star from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for center Andrew Bynum, three future draft picks and the right to swap 2015 first round picks with the Cavs (1-14 protected). It was the best possible outcome for the Cavs, who turned Bynum's attractive contract into a valuable asset who may be able to help the Cavs salvage this floundering season. It was unclear whether Deng would be here for Tuesday night's game against Philadelphia at The Q. http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2014/01/cleveland_cavaliers_trade_andr.html

Waiting at bus stations must be deadly!
  8. Has this been happening more often lately? It's also unfortunate as people are more likely to take the rapid to avoid driving long distances on the bad roads and end up with a negative experience of RTA.

Looking back to the beginning of this thread, there are some funny posts (MayDay, MyTwoSense). This post is so true though. How can we get our council down to 9 people?
  10. I think the entire warehouse district is going to undergo a change, ready or not. The rise of new entertainment districts like East 4th, West 25th & soon to be Flats East Bank has permanently changed the attraction of the Warehouse District. They should focus on other uses like retail or other services to support the residential because I think they'll only attract second-rate night clubs at this point, which is a big reason why the landlord wouldn't approve the sale of the Blind Pig, so I'm told. The most active part of the Warehouse District is West 6th south of St Clair, and thats only half a street as the other side is a parking lot. You have restaurants, Starbucks, and a hair salon. The northern part of West 6th is usually pretty dead since it is mostly clubs only open a couple days a week at night. Not really a great use for the neighborhood.
  11. Its a Cleveland TOD Discussion thread. I think it would be confusing to open it up to all cities.

$$$$$$$$. I would guess more plow trucks and more overtime for the service department or simply more service workers. Don't forget that, for a city of its size, Beachwood has an enourmous tax base. A city like Cleveland seems to do a good job during a storm, but stops once the storm stops and does not clean up the remaining mess and add more salt to melt the ice. Beachwood has plenty of $$$ like you said, so they probably continue after the storm is over and make sure the roads are all good. I am pretty disappointed with Cleveland though since even major streets, Euclid, Chester, Superior, St Clair, etc. are all still bad days after a storm.

^ but most of us already own a car, so we already have to pay ownership costs. For me, operating costs are actually lower than an all day pass. The only way to make transit cheaper is if I had didn't have a car. The problem with that is that I need a car with our city/system. If I moved to a denser city with better transit then hell yeah, my car would be gone in a minute. But when already owning a car, using it is cheaper than using transit. And time costs can be much lower too.
  14. They are going to "need" that space for a parking lot for the new car oriented development across the street. And they will "need" the parking lot to be built prior to any groundbreaking across the street! I wouldn't be too surprised to hear that the rumor was actually true.

I was surprised to see how bad Cleveland's streets were today at 10:30am. The major snowfall ended awhile ago and Chester, St Clair, and most of downtown were pretty bad. They are still bad. How aren't they cleared yet? Did they stop once the snow stopped? Snowstorm left downtown Cleveland's streets a slushy mess. Who do drivers blame? 16. RTA mechanical failure strands passengers on train Friday evening CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Riders on an eastbound Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority train were stuck inside for about an hour Friday evening due to a mechanical failure. The Red Line train halted around East 29th Street and Kinsman Road, said RTA spokesperson Pat Kearney. The train was heated. Kearney said she did not know many people were on board. The failure occurred around 7:30 p.m. Kearney said the weather did not cause the mechanical failure. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2014/01/rta_mechanical_failure_strands.html
  17. Nothing major, but ALDI has now expanded their organic produce selection to the Cleveland market (maybe all of Ohio). Edit: Looks like they just recently made the move to expand it nationwide.

If I lived in a city with great public transit I would definitely ditch the car. Currently I share a car with my girlfriend, but I find using the car to be much cheaper than taking transit. Transit also doesn't get us to where we need to go for most cases. Since we already have to pay all of the costs associated with owning a car, taking public transportation would be more expensive since gas alone is cheaper than transit passes.

  20. BakerHostetler plans move to Key Tower from PNC Center in 2016 CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The BakerHostetler law firm confirmed today that it has signed a lease on five floors at Key Tower, in a long-rumored deal that will absorb space being emptied out by the building's marquee tenant. The Cleveland-based law firm expects to fill 115,000 square feet on the 17th through 21st floors of downtown's tallest skyscraper. The firm's 15-year lease at Key Tower starts Jan. 1, 2016. BakerHostetler's move will blunt the blow of KeyCorp's decision to shed 11 floors at Key Tower as part of the bank's broader real estate reorganization. But BakerHostetler will leave a large hole at PNC Center, another downtown office building impacted by the financial crisis and a wave of bank consolidation. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2014/01/bakerhostetler_plans_move_to_k.html

Cleveland Council President-elect Kevin Kelley emphasizes attendance and professionalism at council retreat CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A lecture on punctuality and professionalism topped the agenda Friday at a Cleveland City Council retreat and working session at Burke Lakefront Airport. Council President-elect Kevin Kelley told members that absences and tardiness will not be tolerated under his leadership, reminding them that the council rules allow him to exact a $100 fine for missing a regular meeting. And he cautioned members for signing off on legislation when they’ve missed the debate on the piece. “Remember that with a stroke of our pen millions of dollars are being allocated,” Kelley said. “Every now and then something will happen where you need to step away, but be very cautious of it. Being engaged in the legislation and participating meaningfully is very important.” Committee chairs and vice-chairs no longer will be permitted to have an open computer screen during meetings. And Kelley went on to say that he is tired of watching committee chairpersons introduce legislation, then unplug from the committee discussion while city directors give their presentations. “One of my personal pet peeves is when .... http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2014/01/cleveland_city_council_preside_5.html Outgoing Cleveland City Council President Martin J. Sweeney retires to 'double-dip,' maintains seniority under new policy CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Outgoing Cleveland City Council President Martin J. Sweeney has retired from office and will be sworn in again Jan. 6 -- a move that allows the 50-year-old councilman to draw benefits from his public pension while also collecting his $76,259-a-year council salary. But unlike other so-called double-dippers, who were stripped of their council seniority after brief retirements, Sweeney will spend no time at the bottom of the pecking order. A new policy, recommended by council’s Rules Committee and adopted by Council President-elect Kevin Kelley, will allow members to maintain their seniority if they retire to tap into state benefits. And it will restore seniority to longtime councilmen Michael Polensek and Ken Johnson, both of whom became double-dippers in recent years and were relegated by Sweeney to the back of the seating chart, typically reserved for freshman members. The policy will make Polensek, Johnson and Sweeney the three most senior members -- granting them seats in the front row of meetings in council chambers and dibs on the best parking spaces and offices at City Hall. http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2014/01/outgoing_cleveland_city_counci_1.html#incart_hbx#incart_best-of

What is that skinny long building in the bottom left corner of the picture? I think that is the corner of West 5th and Central.
