Shaker Heights: Development and News
These are the town homes at Van Aken/Onaway, not the big development at Warrensville.

I didn't know about this, so I looked it up and...wow. Here's a comparison between the area in 1957 and today

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2017
We have been after Chris to run for years. That would be the best and most realistic scenario I can imagine. I'd be surprised to see Chris run with Jackson also running. But, who knows?

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2017
It's official: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/01/cleveland_mayor_frank_jackson_31.html Well, this is a bummer.

Agreed. I love what Comerica does with their exterior lights:

^ Still awful, but yes, I do think it looks better

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Depends who you ask. I see people using it most times that I go by there. Other people say it's "always" empty, which just isn't true.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Especially since there is no such signage at light rail stations and very rarely on the LRT cars themselves. And then there's the whole issue of when you board the WFL going to Tower City, you have to pay when you enter the train, then if you get off at TC, you have to go through the gates. But if you paid cash on the train, I guess you just have to tell the attendant at the gate and hope they let you through? (I know we've beaten this subject to death over the years, but it's still ridiculous and I like complaining about it).

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
All of the Red Line platforms are set up to be restricted access, right? Which is why it makes no sense that we'd have POP on the Red Line and not the Green or Blue lines. I agree. RTA's answer is that they can't afford to put fare machines at all the light rail stations to make it POP.
-
Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
POP is proof-of payment, the same thing that you are describing as the honor system. It's not really accurate to call it the honor system though, as there are random inspections throughout the system. And I don't know of any other heavy rail systems in the US besides ours that uses proof-of-payment. It's much more common in light rail systems, and oddly enough, our light rail does not use POP

We really should have created an entirely separate thread for this whole saga.

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2017
The others aren't serious candidates. We still have quite a bit of time for others to jump in the ring though. I suspect some are waiting until Jackson announces a decision.

I agree with the statements about him being smart and capable, but I disagree with the parts about him being a fine mayor.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Lots and lots of "big city" transit systems use proof-of-payment. And if they don't, they have high enough ridership to justify spending the money on turnstiles and station managers at each station.

Flag of the City of Cleveland
I do like the crest in the middle, and I think it should be the design for the city's seal, but it shouldn't be on the flag. You can't tell what any of the symbols are when it's flying, and words in general don't do well on flags.

You can use a credit card at the ticket machines at the Rapid station. If you buy a single fare ticket, it should already be activated upon purchase. There are no transfers allowed on them though. Only the all day pass and multi-trip passes have transfer capability. An all day pass may be worthwhile, which would allow you to use the HealthLine if need be. And the only time you'll need to swipe the card is when you exit/enter the platform at the Tower City station. But yes, sadly it is probably easier to find parking downtown somewhere as street parking will all be free.

I agree, I like the Ohio City flag, and you see it all over the neighborhood. I love how a lot of private homes fly it too. I've only ever once seen a Cleveland flag being flown at someone's residence.

Flag of the City of Cleveland
I wrote up a blog post last week (https://tomhorsman.wordpress.com/2017/01/09/the-symbol-of-the-city-the-cleveland-flag/) about the flag of the City of Cleveland that looked back at its history as well as argued that we should look at creating a new flag design. It has long bothered me that Cleveland's flag is not more prominent, and I think its bad design is part of the reason why (yes, I've thought this long before Roman Mars gave his famous TED talk on city flags http://99percentinvisible.org/article/vexillology-revisited-fixing-worst-civic-flag-designs-america/). As you can see below, you can barely make out any of the symbols on the flag when it is flying in the distance and it just looks like a backwards French flag. I would be curious to hear your thoughts. Some people might think such an endeavor is pointless or dumb, but I really do think it is worthy of pursuing. There is a Facebook group out there that I would encourage you to join if you are interested (it wasn't created by me): https://www.facebook.com/groups/812949152148074/

Cleveland Mayoral Race 2017
We finally have some news. As expected, Councilman Jeff Johnson is running for mayor of Cleveland. Still no announcement from Jackson about whether or not he will run. Cleveland City Councilman Jeffrey Johnson will run for mayor By Leila Atassi, cleveland.com on January 16, 2017 at 6:56 PM, updated January 16, 2017 at 9:40 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland City Councilman Jeffrey Johnson will run for mayor of Cleveland -- seeking to oust three-term Mayor Frank Jackson whom he says has lost touch with the people he serves. In a recent interview with cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer, Johnson said he intends to go to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections on Tuesday afternoon - accompanied by his family -- to pull petitions, officially kicking off his mayoral campaign. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/01/cleveland_councilman_jeffrey_j_1.html

Public Square's future depends on cool heads and bus facts, not more fighting By Mark Naymik, cleveland.com Email the author | Follow on Twitter on January 05, 2017 at 4:32 PM, updated January 05, 2017 at 7:29 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - No more quarreling. Cleveland City Hall, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority and the Federal Transit Administration need to stop exchanging warnings and complaints about whether it is best for taxpayers and the general public to reopen Public Square to bus traffic. http://www.cleveland.com/naymik/index.ssf/2017/01/public_squares_future_depends.html

If you watch Mayor Jackson's bumbling press conference on the subject, that was his line of thinking as well. "Show me the breach!"

Cleveland: Downtown: May Company Building
It's difficult to see inside the space, but the only noticeable change is that a wall has been erected cutting off the Taco Bell space from the rest of the old Cadillac Ranch. It doesn't look like there has been any interior detailing yet. Not sure where they are with the process though.
