  1. I disagree with that. Speaking strictly from the experience of a rider on those cars, I don't think they provide a comfortable or smooth ride at all. My biggest gripe with them is how they significantly sway back and forth when moving. Does anyone know why that is? I haven't been on a transit system anywhere that has cars that do that. I have a family member who can't ride the Red Line without getting feelings of nauseousness. And it's not the fault of the cars themselves, but the seats are arranged in such a way that makes it uncomfortable to sit for anyone who is just a little bit on the taller side. I, for one, will be glad to see those cars go. (But I do agree that I hope we don't end up with a crappy product because of needing to go with the lowest bidder, like how we got stuck with the Bredas)
  2. Judge OKs sale plan for John Hartness Brown building in downtown Cleveland By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer on August 10, 2016 at 11:56 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Say "so long" to visions of a Le Meridien hotel on Euclid Avenue. After years of struggling to secure financing for a hospitality project, an out-of-state development group has lost its shot at remaking the historic John Hartness Brown complex in downtown Cleveland. Now the property is likely to be sold to Alto Partners, another out-of-town developer with designs on making the empty buildings part of the center city's revival. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2016/08/judge_oks_sale_plan_for_john_h.html
  3. ^ The thing I miss most about living in DC is having a preponderance of Ethiopian restaurants around town. I'm glad that Cleveland is adding another one.
  4. It's most definitely a frequent thing. I'd say 75% of the time that I'm on the HealthLine or Red Line, someone is blasting music. And yes, it's not unique to Cleveland by any means, but it's still extremely annoying (except for the guy who was playing Motown music on my bus yesterday, it was only slightly annoying then). My biggest frustration is when it is happening in close proximity to the bus/train operator and they say nothing about it. I just can't fathom how someone thinks that doing that is socially acceptable
  5. ^ Yes, the 26 and the E-Line trolley would also run through Superior
  6. I'd be curious though if Tower City management has restricted RTA in any way about placement of signage at certain locations. I don't know. But not everything is always RTA's fault (although they don't do themselves any favors in preventing us from jumping to that conclusion). If Tower City is in any way impeding RTA, we've got real problems in this town. A rapid transit station/terminal has existed decades before Tower City mall came into existence, and certainly eons before Dan Gilbert came on the scene. RTA has a public easement to its trains and Gilbert/TC shouldn't have any say in the placement of directional signs in the building so long as they are no distasteful and harm TC business... and the sign I see in the photo certainly doesn't fall within that range. I only bring it up because I know there have been issues with Forest City regarding this issue before. Hopefully in the Gilbert era we can more fully embrace Tower City as a rapid transit station, and finally add some damn signage outside to indicate it as such!

  8. A huge pet peeve of mine. Why is it so hard for some organizations to print professional looking signs? I could literally make one up and print it in color in less than two minutes.
  9. Nice! Although, I must ask, what is Memphis like if she was "amazed at the Galleria??"

Playoff hockey. False. Playoff baseball >
  12. Regarding the new west bound track 7 at Tower City, I think RTA has done a great job with signage on the north side of Tower City, but there is nothing at all visible on the south side station entrance, nor down at the station level. The last couple nights I've noticed people coming back from the Tribe game via the Walkway to Gateway and going down to the station level to go west bound, and only realized they were in the wrong place when the RTA staff member at the turnstiles told them they had to go back up upstairs to get to the platform. Also, the elevator is currently not operational at the track 7 platform, so you have to climb three levels of stairs. I have noticed that the train conductors are not making announcements about 1) the platform relocation, or 2) the lack of an elevator (at least on the few trains I've been on going into TC). No signs Classy elevator outage signage. (Edit: to be fair, upon seeing this, ppl at HQ instructed a sign to be placed there). Not sure how people with disabilities are supposed to exit the station, but whatever (Edit: Didn't see this earlier @GCRTA We apologize the elevator @track 7 is currently down. There will be a shuttle bus @ East 55th to transport ADA riders to tower city con'td)

The Indians are 11-13 since their winning streak
  14. I'd be curious to see, and too lazy at the current moment to go in and figure it out, how many buses would be running through the square per hour throughout the day. Anyone know that off the top of their head?

Also this: "Private companies have invested heavily in the downtown, including Hilton’s gleaming new 32-story downtown hotel overlooking the FirstEnergy Stadium where the Cleveland Browns play."

^ That's an overreaction. This farm system is in no way depleted. Farm systems exist to be a pipeline of talent to the major league club as well as to serve as currency to upgrade the team. Our window to win is RIGHT NOW and we're going for it. It's tough to part with those prospects, but it's a good move.

F you, Lucroy. Still excited to have Miller, but I really hope they can get another bat before tomorrow.
  18. Agree 100%. Also, I was talking to one of the guys at the soldiers and sailors monument and he said that they've been talking with the county about putting some exterior up lighting on the shaft and that it hopefully would get done soon. And it looks like the bulbs have all been replaced in the lamp posts at the monument.

I thought I'd start a new thread for general transit news in Detroit, as there has been a lot happening there that has nothing to do with the new streetcar. Also, Metro Detroit has a number of similarities to Greater Cleveland. To kick off this thread, there was some really bad news that came out of Detroit yesterday. The new RTA of Southeast Michigan has spent the last year putting together a large transit master plan together for Metro Detroit (http://www.rtamichigan.org/projects/master-plan/). It was planned to go on the ballot this November in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw counties. However, the executives of Oakland and Macomb Counties yesterday voted against sending the proposal to the voters. Here's a good editorial from the Free Press summing up the situation: http://www.freep.com/story/opinion/editorials/2016/07/27/transit-regional-detroit/87566050/ This would be Detroit's 27th time failing to create a regional transit system. Sad!
  20. Due to a "damaged pantograph," all rail service has been shut down as of this morning. No word on when it is expected to be back up.
  21. Opens today at 3pm http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2016/07/28/now-open-811-from-the-red-restaurant-group
  22. My anecdotal observations point to this as well. They never seem to be crowded, even when the other establishments in FEB are jam packed. In other news, 811 on Prospect looked like it was open last night. I don't know if it was just a soft launch, or if it's fully open to the public yet. Sorry for the blurry picture.
  23. I agree. I think we need an indoor bus terminal. Cincinnati & Detroit both do it right, they have transit centers a block away from Fountain Square & Campus Martius.
  24. I've been volunteering a lot during the RNC and also have gone to a number of parties with my friends visiting from DC, and I've lost count of the times that people have told me how impressed they are with Cleveland. Most people originally were skeptical of the location, but have said that people here are much more friendly and that the city has been nicer and more walkable than previous conventions. A delegate from Georgia commented on Public Square on how beautiful it was and lamented how they wish they could have such things back home. I know the RNC has kind of been a pain in the ass, but I think we have gained favor from thousands of people visiting here for the first time. Also, my friend who covers DOJ stuff for the Huffington Post and did a lot in Ferguson has said that he has been impressed by how well the Cleveland Police have handled the protests. Nice job so far, Cleveland.
