I just opened up this link and literally laughed out loud when I saw the title of the page: "Meet RTA's state-of-the-art fare collection system"

^ Yes, you will need exact change. And you don't get a farecard, and there are no transfers for a single ride. I would recommend stocking up on 5-ride cards. That way you can swipe the card instead of using cash when you exit and it allows you 2 1/2 hours of transfer privileges

^ Not to mention there are only signs describing the payment system on about half of the LRT trains, and even those they are usually only at one end of the train

Pay when exiting traveling west bound. Pay when entering traveling east bound. There are only fare machines at Tower City, so if that's your final destination, you can buy one there after getting off. If you're getting off before Tower City, then you have to pay cash. Exact change. Is this a completely antiquated & highly confusing system? Yes. Yes it is.
  7. ^ The sales tax is ineed lacking. There are 400,000 less people living in the county than there were when the tax was instituted. Also, many more goods are purchased online today. We need to rethink our local funding mechanism, in addition to getting more state funding.
  8. ^ I agree that we need more local revenue and that our farebox recovery needs to be higher, but at $2.25, I have a hard time agreeing that our fares are "artificially low."
  9. Geiger's now has a permanent sign at their downtown location. Went up today
  10. The scaffolding over the sidewalk has been removed
  11. ^ But we'll have no problem keeping enough LRT cars in service until 2025...
  12. Things are not looking good for "Ohio's Polytechnic University." So far, they are down 33% in enrollment deposits compared to this point last year. Whereas numbers at both Kent St and Cleveland State are up University of Akron turmoil hurting enrollment By Karen Farkas, cleveland.com on March 31, 2016 at 9:16 AM, updated March 31, 2016 at 9:59 AM AKRON, Ohio - The number of students who say they plan to attend the University of Akron this fall has dropped by a third, following a year of turmoil over issues including layoffs, rebranding and President Scott Scarborough's leadership. Faculty took an overwhelming vote of no confidence this year, and protestors upset at Scarborough's actions gather outside the board room at every trustee meeting. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/03/university_of_akron_turmoil_af.html

I'm glad they're talking about this. It needs to happen Metro could shut down entire rail lines to do extended maintenance, board chair says By Robert McCartney March 30 at 2:38 PM Metro is in such need of repair that the transit system could shut down an entire rail line for as long as six month to do needed maintenance, Metro board Chairman Jack Evans said Wednesday. At a minimum, Evans said, Metro will have to shut segments of lines for extended periods because there isn’t enough time to do the necessary work using only nights and weekends. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/2016/03/30/fba8ae0a-f688-11e5-9804-537defcc3cf6_story.html
  14. Another plus: "A pint of beer will fetch no more than $5.50, with most of the burgers and sandwiches on the food menu coming in under $10." First look: Wild Eagle Saloon brings ambitious concept to downtown Cleveland By John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer on March 30, 2016 at 6:01 AM, updated March 30, 2016 at 11:16 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The downtown nightlife scene is like a leopard's coat – spots of activity with empty spaces in between. The spots are named after streets or attached to attractions. Yes, there's West Sixth and East Fourth, but also Playhouse Square or Gateway. Each have their own characteristics and crowds – foodies, diners, partyers, sport fans or suburbanites in town for an event. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/03/first_look_wild_eagle_saloon_b.html
  15. A lot of people hating on the Wild Eagle Saloon, but damn, look at this menu. I wish I didn't live right across the street...I'm going to gain 10 pounds http://media.wix.com/ugd/e8de6d_870873bb4aa244a98fa9738bc7e1d83e.pdf

  18. From what I've heard, RTA is all for teaming up with Uber/Lyft, but it's the city of Cleveland that's standing in the way Taxi businesses are influencing city officials to block it. Adapt or die, taxi companies! Yeah, I was surprised when I heard that. I didn't think Cleveland had a powerful "taxi lobby"

  20. ^ Nice! Now let's standardize all the light posts in downtown Cleveland
  21. The sales tax is already maxed out in the county so it can't be raised. The sales tax was sufficient before Cuyahoga County lost hundreds of thousands of residents. As for influencing public officials to advocate for transit, that's part of the reason why Clevelanders for Public Transit came into existence.
  22. I was up in Detroit again this past weekend, but instead of creating a new thread, I thought I'd just update this one with a few pictures I took. My first time seeing Michigan Central Station with all its new windows in place The (in)famous Slow's BBQ in Corktown, looking down Michigan Ave Michigan Ave is really wide You'll notice no buildings on the south side of Michigan Ave pre-date the 1940s. The street was much narrower, but the buildings on the south side were completely demolish in the 1940s in order for the road to be expanded. No caption needed The plus side of Detroit's wide streets? Lots of room for bike lanes Now moving downtown The JACK Detroit Casino-Hotel Greektown Look at that: a protected bike lane buffered by parking lanes! Atwater Brewery's new brepub Palm Sunday Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. It was designed by Cleveland based architect (and my great great great uncle) Henry Walsh M-1 Rail (QLINE) construction in Mid Town Inside the Guardian Building Detroit's tackily decorated ballpark Soldiers and Sailors monument at Campus Martius Yes, this is a real thing

I've never had a desire to go to OKC, but this thread just changed that
  25. ^ I could go on for many a paragraph about RTA's maps, but I don't want to beat a dead horse. Relating to transit maps, check out https://twitter.com/theGreaterMarin. They are making a frequency map of RTA's rail system and high frequency bus routes. Looks like it's almost done.
